Top takeaways from Seahawks vs Raiders preseason tie

USA Todaya day ago
The Seattle Seahawks kissed their sisters to kick off the preseason with a 23-23 tie against the Las Vegas Raiders. Seattle sort of squandered a 23-13 lead in the fourth quarter by allowing 10-unanswered points from the Raiders in the final moments of the game, but they did preserve the... um, not loss(?)... by blocking Daniel Carlson's game-winning field goal attempt. It was a bizarre combination of excitement and weirdness at 10:30 pm to have every 12th Man scratching their heads on the way out.
Still, the Seahawks did not outright lose the game, and this contest was ultimately meaningless in the grand scheme of things. While the final score may not have mattered, there are plenty of aspects from this game that warrant further discussion. Here are the top takeaways from Seattle's preseason opening week tie.
George Holani wants to make the final roster
Last season, then-rookie George Holani did not survive the final roster cuts. While he did make it to Seattle's practice squad and even suited up for 5 games in 2024, he was ultimately a non-factor last year. Through one week of the preseason, it's evident Holani does not want this to be the case in 2025. Against the Raiders, the former Boise State Bronco bulldozed his way to 61 rushing yards and a touchdown on only seven carries. He even hauled in one pass for 20 yards. Making this game even sweeter was the fact his former Boise State teammate, Ashton Jeanty, was on the other sideline for Las Vegas. Given Seattle's health issues at the running back position, Holani finds himself in a unique opportunity.
Tory Horton is looking like a steal in the draft
Colorado State's Tory Horton suffered a knee injury during the 2024 campaign and it clearly hurt his draft stock. Horton fell to the Seahawks in the 5th round of the 2025 NFL draft, and already there are signs Seattle may have committed highway robbery with this pick. Horton was the leading receiver for the Seahawks on Thursday night, hauling in three receptions on seven targets (team high) for 31 yards and a touchdown. Horton slipped past three different Raiders to find the end zone for the first time in an NFL game, and he even made several more miss on his first attempt at returning a punt.
Drew Lock did enough to stay QB2
Drew Lock played the entirety of the first half. He completed 12-of-22 passes for 147 yards with the one touchdown to Tory Horton, as well as an interception thrown on the first possession of the game in the red zone. It wasn't anything spectacular, but it was a decent performance overall given the context of it being the first preseason action of the year. With Sam Darnold already being the starter, and since Jalen Milroe will likely be in a unique gadget role, as long as Lock doesn't have a cataclysmic performance in the preseason the backup position should be his.
Jalen Milroe is going to be a lot of fun to watch
Jalen Milroe took over at halftime from Drew Lock. On the night he completed 6-of-10 passes for 61 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed the ball three times for 38 yards and showed off his explosive running ability. Milroe did throw an incomplete pass on 4th-and-1 where he could have ran it, and took an unfortunate sack on 3rd down late in the game sealing Seattle's fate to not winning the game, so there is obvious room for improvement. But man, it's hard to not get excited about what he can bring to the table.

Mariners' Cal Raleigh ties Hall of Famer's record with slump-busting, game-winning home run

Mariners' Cal Raleigh ties Hall of Famer's record with slump-busting, game-winning home run originally appeared on The Sporting News The Seattle Mariners' fans were chanting MVP, but Cal Raleigh hadn't played like one for a little while. So this one swing was much, much needed, both in the context of the game and the context of Raleigh's season. Down 2-0, with two men on, Raleigh launched a moonshot to dead center field, gone, home run, the go-ahead homer and the slump-busting swing. Raleigh, from slump to superhero -- his usual role this season in Seattle. More significantly for present record-setting circumstances, it was Raleigh's 35th of the season while in the lineup as a catcher (and not a DH). That ties the American League record for most homers by a catcher in a season. He's tied with Ivan Rodriguez, the Hall of Famer, who previously did that in 1999, a year he won AL MVP. Raleigh has hit below .200 since the start of July. His home run pace had slowed way down, too. But this could be the swing that changes everything. The Mariners have been hot around him. If he heats up too, look out. He's got a great chance of getting to 50 homers and beyond. And now he's got a special moment to draw on as he tries to rediscover his first-half magic. What a swing by the Big Dumper. Raiders' Geno Smith, Maxx Crosby flip off Seahawks fans in stunning viral video

Geno Smith's return to Seattle wasn't a heartwarming moment. The former Seahawks quarterback may actually be an enemy now after his antics. Smith and Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby were seen making obscene gestures toward Seahawks fans as they entered the field Thursday night for their preseason game. The gestures — giving the fans the double bird — were similar to what Lions safety Brian Branch was fined for last November in a game against the Packers. The gestures were captured on video and were all over social media Friday. 4 Geno Smith #7 of the Las Vegas Raiders gives the finger to fans as he takes the field during the NFL Preseason 2025 game between Las Vegas Raiders and Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field on August 07, 2025 in Seattle, Washington. Getty Images Russell was the first pick in the 2007 draft of the Raiders. He was a colossal disappointment, going 7-18 as the starting quarterback in three seasons. Seattle traded Smith, their starter the last three seasons, to the Raiders this offseason in a reunion with his old coach, Pete Carroll. Thursday's game also marked Carroll's return to Seattle after his exit following the 2023 season and he revealed there were a few times he thought he was still coaching his former squad as he watched the two squads make plays. 4 Geno Smith #7 and Maxx Crosby #98 of the Las Vegas Raiders look on during the NFL Preseason 2025 game between Las Vegas Raiders and Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field on August 07, 2025 in Seattle, Washington. Vic Fangio doesn't rule out Jakorian Bennett competing for Eagles' No. 2 starting CB job

Jakorian Bennett just joined the Eagles, but DC Vic Fangio says it's possible he could compete for the No. 2 cornerback spot opposite Quinyon Mitchell In a move that'll add more cornerback depth, the Eagles have acquired cornerback Jakorian Bennett from the Raiders for Thomas Booker. Bennett became the odd man out in a cornerback rotation that includes second-year cover guy Darien Porter, Eric Stokes, and Decamerion Richardson. Bennett was in attendance for the Eagles' Tuesday morning practice, and dressed for their preseason opener against the Bengals. Philadelphia returned to the NovaCare Complex for a Saturday practice, and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was asked about Bennett competing for the No. 2 cornerback job opposite Quinyon Mitchell. After watching Kelee Ringo and Adoree' Jackson struggle against the Bengals, Fangio didn't rule anything out. The 5-foot-10, 200-pound Bennett enters his third NFL season out of Maryland. The 24-year-old was a fourth-round pick of the Raiders in 2023. Last season, Bennett started seven of the 10 games that he played at outside cornerback and finished with eight passes defensed. According to Pro Football Focus, he allowed just 45 percent of pass attempts in his direction to be completed (third best in the league among players with 250+ coverage snaps). Quarterbacks posted a passer rating of just 57.9 and had zero touchdowns against him. Bennett was the Raiders' best corner in the 10 games he played last year, but he's struggled to stay healthy in his first two seasons, and according to The Athletic, he saw his reps dwindle with the hiring of Pete Carroll.
