‘Minister, functionaries with no knowledge of archaeology cannot comment on expert's findings'

The Hindua day ago

'When the Archaeological Survey of India's (ASI) archaeologist Amarnath Ramakrishna has released a detailed report on the ancient civilization in Keezhadi based on the excavations from his official position, how can a Union Minister and party members who possess no knowledge about the subject can comment on the expert's knowledge and findings,' questioned Madurai-based archaeologist C. Santhalingam.
He was speaking at a protest conducted by Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers Artists Association here on Wednesday to demand the release of the excavation reports of Keezhadi.
Mr. Santhalingam said that if the Union government was sceptical about the archaeologist's expertise, they should appoint a team to verify the facts of the report.
Impugning the archaeologist's knowledge and accusing him of possessing a regional mindset was not something a government should do to impose its ideology and politics, he stated.
The recent political developments staged by BJP were contrary to their own position when a senior ASI Director General released a book on Adichanallur excavation findings, he said.
While Keezhadi excavations have unearthed the history 100 years after the Adichanallur findings, how could one accept Adichanallur and not accept something that happened after that period, he questioned.
'One of the oldest hero stones in Puliman Kombai with Brahmi script inscriptions dating back to 3rd to 4th century BCE proves the literary knowledge possessed by the Tamils, the politically motivated statements of the Union government and BJP leaders show their lack of scientific temper,' Mr. Santhalingam observed.
The Indian people before the arrival of British believed that the Mahabharata and Ramayana were the only history of India, he said.
'If not for the British, who carried out an extensive research across the country and brought the history of Brahmi and languages evolved from that and showed the world a ruler named Ashoka, most of the truth would have been shadowed by the lies of rulers and politicians,' he added.
Though the current protests might look like one between parties, it was actually the protest between Aryans and Dravidians which goes back to 2,000 years ago, he stated.
Even in regions surrounding Madurai, the Jain beds in several hillocks were commonly known as Panja Pandava Padukaigal (a term linked to Mahabharata) to people, he said.
'Only because of the evidence-based research and study the places are being known as Jain beds which were used by Jains as rest place,' he stated.
Madhukur Ramalingam also spoke during the protest.

Might go up: Trump signals hike in auto tariffs for more US production

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday warned he may soon hike auto tariffs, arguing that could prod carmakers to speed U.S. investments."I might go up with that tariff in the not-too-distant future," Trump said at a White House event. "The higher you go, the more likely it is they will build a plant here."Automakers have been pressing the White House to reduce the 25% tariffs Trump imposed on autos. The Detroit Three automakers have criticised a deal that would cut tariffs on British car imports but not on Canadian or Mexican Trump cited a series of recent investment announcements, including GM saying this week that it plans to invest $4 billion in three U.S. plants and move some SUV production from Mexico. He also noted a $21 billion Hyundai investment announced in March including a new U.S. steel plant."They wouldn't have invested 10 cents if we didn't have tariffs, including for manufacturing American steel, which is doing great," Trump said last month that cars assembled in Mexico and exported to the U.S. will face an average tariff of 15%, not 25% because Washington is giving automakers reductions for the value of U.S. are facing increasing cost pressures stemming from tariffs. In recent weeks, Ford Motor F.N and Subaru of America 7270.T have hiked prices on some models due to higher costs from Trump's tariffs. In May, Ford estimated tariffs would cost it about $1.5 billion in adjusted said last month it had a current tariff exposure of between $4 billion and $5 billion, including about $2 billion on the more affordable vehicles GM imports from South Korea, where it makes entry-level Chevrolet and Buick InMust Watch

Why Google and Latin America's largest airline LATAM are fighting a court battle over a YouTube video

Alphabet's Google has reportedly launched a legal battle against Chile-based LATAM Airlines in a U.S. federal court in San Jose, California, seeking to block Brazilian courts from forcing the removal of a YouTube video in the United States. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The video, which alleges that a LATAM employee sexually abused a child, has sparked a heated dispute over jurisdictional reach, Reuters reported. Google's lawsuit argues that LATAM is attempting to bypass U.S. constitutional protections for free speech by leveraging Brazilian courts to demand the video's global removal. "LATAM is trying to sidestep U.S. law," the filing stated, accusing the airline of overreaching its authority. LATAM Airlines did not immediately respond to Reuters' inquiries regarding Google's claims. Jose Castaneda, a Google spokesperson, emphasized the company's stance, stating, "Google has consistently upheld the principle that a country's courts can govern content within its borders but should not dictate what is accessible in other nations." What is the Google vs LATAM case about At the heart of the current dispute is a 2018 YouTube video uploaded by Raymond Moreira, a Florida resident and U.S. citizen. The video features his 6-year-old son describing alleged sexual abuse by a LATAM employee during a trip as an unaccompanied minor. In 2020, Moreira sued LATAM in Florida over the incident, reaching a confidential settlement. LATAM responded by filing a lawsuit in Brazil in 2018, seeking to compel Google, YouTube's parent company, to remove the video. Brazil's highest court is set to decide next week whether it can mandate a worldwide takedown. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Google's Thursday filing in California asks the court to affirm that LATAM cannot enforce such a removal in the U.S. What Google vs LATAM case shows The case mirrors a February lawsuit in Florida, where Trump Media and Rumble, two right-wing social media platforms, challenged a Brazilian judge's order to delete U.S.-based accounts linked to a supporter of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. A federal judge in that case ruled that the platforms were not required to comply with the Brazilian directive in the U.S. This case highlights ongoing tensions over global content regulation. In a similar 2018 case, Canada's Supreme Court ordered Google to remove certain search results worldwide, but a California judge blocked its enforcement in the U.S. in 2017, underscoring the challenges of reconciling national laws with global digital platforms.
