Two 'unsafe' Peterborough footbridges reopen after repair works
Footbridges that have been shut for more than a year will reopen following repair works.Peterborough City Council (PCC) closed three footbridges within Cuckoo's Hollow, in Werrington, over public safety concerns and said they were "at risk of collapse".Members of the public previously expressed disappointment over the lack of consultation about the decision and the impact it would have on accessibility.This week, the local authority said restoration works, costing about £1.2m, had been completed and two of the three bridges would reopen on Friday.
Bridges at the reserve were inspected in January last year, and the council found signs of degradation and evidence of water voles.It said that three bridges, adjacent to Baron Court, Lakeside and Welbourne, had deteriorated much more quickly than anticipated and posed a risk to public safety.However, the council said only two unsafe bridges - Baron Court and Lakeside - would be replaced due to a limited council budget.PPC's cabinet member for environment and transport, Angus Ellis, previously said the authority prioritised replacing those particular bridges to ensure there was access to the north and south of Cuckoo's Hollow."I am pleased that this work to replace the bridges is being done, it is much needed by residents and visitors to the natural habitat of Cuckoos Hollow," he said.

Wombourne battery storage site recommended for approval
Plans for a 60-megawatt battery storage system in Staffordshire have been recommended for approval. South Staffordshire District Council will consider the proposal for the facility on Flash Lane, Wombourne on Tuesday 17 June. The application, submitted in October, received objections from concerned residents, who fear the site would mean a loss of character for the area and have a negative impact on approved, the storage facility will use the existing overhead line into Penn Substation. Two access tracks would be established, along with a new access point along Flash Lane. The planning application was submitted by ADAS Planning on behalf of Greenfield Co. Application documents said the site would have a "profoundly positive landscape influence", adding it would "at most have a negligible impact on the local transport network".The Canal and River Trust submitted a statement to say that permission should not be granted due to the proposal failing to demonstrate the site would not result in a detrimental impact on the character of the area. However a report by planning officers said the site would not be an "inappropriate development". It added: "Taking all factors into consideration, the wider environmental benefits of the development in the context of the government's national strategy of decarbonising the country's energy system and the uplift in site biodiversity, are considered to clearly outweigh any harm to the nearby heritage assets and the green belt, which is limited." Minke whale spotted off shores in Cornwall
A minke whale has apparently been spotted feeding off the shore by fishing crews in Mermaid Pleasure Trips said the mammal was spotted where hoards of jellyfish had also been seen.A local fisherman said he saw three or four in a pod recently, which indicated that bait fish stocks were in the area were healthy. Skipper Adrian said the whale was seen between Mousehole and Lamorna. He said: "I think we saw it for something like 20, 25 minutes - it was coming up going down, you could see that it was feeding, very nice sight to see them."I had the tip off the earlier morning from a fishing boat friend of mine that said he'd seen them down off the Lizard and they was coming into the bay, so I was keeping my eyes open."
