A fireproof edition of Margaret Atwood's prescient and often-banned book "The Handmaids Tale." It is ... More one of the greatest works of speculative fiction.
Speculative fiction, often referred to as spec fic, is one of the most unique and exciting genres in the reading world. Speculative fiction books may take you to other worlds, reimagine certain aspects of our own world, or create new rules for a new future. They can encompass aspects of science fiction and fantasy, and many of them have romance as well. The best speculative fiction books create a world that is so well-articulated and described that readers feel as though they have been transported somewhere else, even if only one or two small elements from our own world have been changed. This list of top speculative fiction works includes novels from some of the genre's most famous authors and many that have remained popular for decades.
Speculative fiction is an umbrella genre that includes any story told in a different world than the one we live in. It encompasses a broad range of subgenres, including fantasy, sci-fi and dystopian novels. Fantasy includes magical aspects, sci-fi focuses on the impact of technology, and dystopian details a bleak future.
All of those are speculative fiction because they include out-of-this-world elements or imagine a time in the future. Some of the best-known speculative fiction writers include Margaret Atwood, Suzanne Collins and Douglas Adams.
Speculative fiction has been popular for more than a century, but it enjoyed its 'golden age' in the 1950s amid the uncertainty of the Cold War. The books on this list were selected based on critical acclaim, awards recognition, book sales, pop culture resonance and quality of the book's writing, characters and other-world development.

I was totally ready to loathe Jennifer Lopez's new to Netflix rom-com movie, but it warmed my cynical heart

It's fair to say I typically like pretty dark movies. My current top 10 movies of 2025 ranking includes five horror movies, and 'Alien' is my favorite movie ever. I also adore thriller flicks. While I have a soft spot for indie coming-of-age comedies, I'm not typically one for romantic comedies. So back in 2022, when 'Marry Me,' a bubbly rom-com starring Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson, arrived in theaters (and day-and-date on Peacock), based on the vibes the trailer gave me, I was pretty confident I was going to not just mildly dislike it, but outright loathe it. As the old saying goes, 'never judge a book by its cover,' or a rom-com by its glossy marketing materials, because while 'Marry Me' is certainly not a trailblazer for the genre, it's an effective crowd-pleaser and managed to mine a lot of charm from its leads' chemistry. If this movie passed you by at release, it's just arrived on Netflix this weekend, and even if you're a cynic like me, you might be pleasantly surprised at this rom-com's heartfelt nature. Pop megastar Kat Valdez (Jennifer Lopez) is set to marry her musical collaborator Bastian (Maluma) on stage at a concert event streamed to millions around the globe. However, moments before saying 'I do' in front of a sold-out crowd, she discovers her fiancé has been having an affair with her assistant. Humiliated, and in a moment of complete madness, she decides to pluck a stranger from the crowd, a single dad named Charlie (Owen Wilson) at the concert with his young daughter, and marries him instead. With the media speculating that she only pulled the stunt out of desperation, she decides to stay married to Charlie for just a few months to save face. However, as Kat and Charlie pretend to be a loved-up couple in front of the cameras, they start to discover some common ground, and real sparks fly. But they come from completely different worlds, and their blossoming relationship is threatened by intense public interest. There really is nothing new about 'Marry Me.' Its central hook of two people pretending to be in a relationship only to slowly fall in love for real has been seen in everything from 'The Proposal' to 'What Happens in Vegas.' Even the wrinkle of a 'normal' person dating a popstar doesn't feel unique following 2023's 'The Idea of You,' though in fairness, 'Marry Me' did get there first, but I'd wager more people have seen the Anne Hathaway Prime Video original movie than have watched "Marry Me." So don't come to 'Marry Me' for bold new ideas, but what you will find is plenty of charm and delightful chemistry between its leads. Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson bounce off each other wonderfully. Naturally, Lopez is extremely well suited to playing a global popstar (little acting required), and Owen has been playing an affable everyman for decades. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Even when it follows a well-worn rom-com pathway, it keeps you invested because its two leads are so likable, and you'll find yourself rooting for their relationship to work out in the end. The supporting cast also includes 'Game of Thrones' alumnus John Bradley and former SNL cast member Sarah Silverman, the latter adding comedy chops to the mix. 'Marry Me's' ultimate message about embracing life and saying yes to the unexpected is, again, nothing original for the genre, but it's a well-meaning one, and just because something is a bit cliche doesn't mean it can't still resonate. And that's sort of 'Marry Me' in a nutshell, lacking fresh ideas, but packaged up in such pretty wrapping you don't mind. Critics often slaughter rom-coms, but 'Marry Me' enjoyed a respectable reception, scoring 61% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is enough for a fresh rating. Meanwhile, viewers loved this one, awarding it a 92% score on the review aggregate site. See what I mean about it being a crowd-pleaser? 'Marry Me' isn't going to challenge you, and it's certainly not going to be the most memorable movie you watch this month, but it has an easy-going attitude, a few chuckle-worthy moments and characters you will care about. When it comes to rom-coms, that's enough in my book, so apologies to 'Marry Me' for writing you off before watching. Looking for something else to watch on Netflix this week? Here's a guide to everything new added to the streaming service this month, which includes more movies and TV shows. Watch "Marry Me" on Netflix now

Dave Chappelle Shouts Out David Letterman During Screening of His Unreleased Doc

Comedy fans, including David Letterman, got a rare look at the unreleased documentary Dave Chappelle: Live in Real Life at the 23rd annual Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival on Aug. 8. The screening of the film, which chronicled the comic's beloved cornfield comedy shows during the pandemic, was followed by an even rarer audience talkback. Initially titled Dave Chappelle: This Time This Place, the doc originally premiered at a packed Radio City Music Hall in 2021 during the first live Tribeca Festival since the COVID-19 lockdown. Fallout over trans jokes from his controversial Netflix special The Closer reportedly derailed distribution. In response, Chappelle did a special tour featuring both the doc and a comedy show. The documentary remains unavailable to the general public. Chapelle's appearance was part of his philanthropic effort to raise money for his D.C. high school, the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, the latest in a string of public events this year that includes accepting the President's Award during the 56th Annual NAACP Image Awards in February. More from The Hollywood Reporter Last Call for Late Night David Letterman Rips CBS Over 'Late Show' Cancellation: "Pure Cowardice" The Atlantic Festival Adds 'The Diplomat' Season 3 First Look and Panels With Tom Hanks, Sterlin Harjo (Exclusive) Following an address from Duke Ellington's principal Sandi Logan, Steven Bognar, who co-directed the film with his now deceased wife Julia Reichert — both of whom won the Oscar for American Factory, produced by the Obamas' production company Higher Ground, in 2020 — introduced the documentary to the full crowd at the Martha's Vineyard Performing Arts Center. As is customary for a Chappelle show, all phones, including press, were zipped up and stored upon entry. 'We have a neighbor; his name is Dave. When the world shut down in 2020, Dave called us,' Bognar said, explaining his and Reichert's involvement as he acknowledged her death, as well as the huge role George Floyd's murder and the subsequent Black Lives Matter protests played in the comic's motivation for hosting his historic cornfield comedy shows during the pandemic. 'Dave felt he needed to do something.' Audience laughs and cheers were frequent during the screening of the feature, which captured emotional behind-the-scenes footage of the shows Chappelle hosted in the cornfields of Yellow Springs, Ohio, where he lives, during the height of COVID and on the heels of Floyd's murder. Over the course of 50+ shows, Chappelle, supported by his wife Elaine, collaborated with his neighbors to create a prototype for comedy shows in the open air with attendees socially distanced and wearing masks. The doc detailed the evolution of COVID testing for the shows, which became a model for live shows at that time. The film also featured numerous candid glimpses of Chappelle's interactions with such comedy friends as Jon Stewart, the late Bob Saget, Chris Rock, Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish and David Letterman, as well as musical performances by Common, Talib Kweli, Erykah Badu and Questlove and a special appearance from Jon Hamm. It also reveals his role as a mentor to the then-emerging comics Michelle Wolf, who lived with the Chappelle family for months during the pandemic, and Mo Amer, along with his special connection to Donnell Rawlings. As the credits rolled, Chappelle, dressed in a suit, sans tie, and sneakers, took a seat onstage and awkwardly discussed the documentary, noting that he didn't know about the scheduled open forum because 'I didn't read the brochure, I just showed up.' Reiterating what Bognar said as to his why for doing the comedy shows, he said, 'It was really important for me to have my voice out there.' From the stage, he shouted out Letterman for being in the audience, crediting the iconic late show host for bringing attention to his cornfield comedy shows by attending and featuring him on his Netflix show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. 'I love you so much, bro,' he told Letterman, who, in return, was handed a mic and shared that Chappelle is the gold standard he cites when advising young comedians in and around his native Indiana, asking whether or not they should go to Los Angeles. 'If you're not going to be as good as Dave Chappelle,' he said, there is no need to leave. The multiple Grammy-winning comedian fielded questions from the audience with wit and candor, briefly referencing the uproar over his trans jokes. 'I've gone on to get snubbed by the Grammys and the Emmys because someone thought it was a good idea to tell trans jokes,' he playfully quipped, despite winning those awards since the controversy. He also sidestepped answering a controversial question from an audience member offering a conspiracy theory around antisemitism. Before closing out, he shared the role Duke Ellington School of the Arts played in affirming him as both an artist and a Black person. 'Ellington gave me a sense of community,' he said, during a time when the crack epidemic was all over the media. 'It was a predominantly Black school when I went there, and that was important because everything in the news was so negative,' he explained, adding that the sense of community was the reason he stepped up during COVID and why he was at the Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival supporting his high school. For the fifth year in a row, Dave Chappelle resumed his comedy show Dave Chappelle's Summer Camp in Yellow Springs, Ohio, starting with the Fourth of July weekend, and continuing through the weekend of Aug. 14-16. It will conclude the weekend of Aug. 21-23. Netflix previews second season of live-action ‘One Piece', show renewed for a third season (VIDEO)

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 10 — Netflix's live-action adaptation of One Piece is officially titled One Piece: Into the Grand Line. Ahead of the Season 2 premiere of Netflix's live-action One Piece, it was announced during the annual One Piece Day celebration in Tokyo that the show has also been renewed for a third season, with production set to begin later this year in Cape Town, South Africa. Season 2 does not yet have a confirmed premiere date but is expected to debut on Netflix in 2026, where it will raise the stakes with more intense battles, new characters, and high-risk adventures across uncharted waters. The first season was praised for its performances, writing, visual effects, and loyalty to the source material, where many nationwide have characterised it as one of the best live-action adaptations of a manga or anime series. One Piece has seen several showrunner changes since its inception— the series was originally developed by Matt Owens and Steven Maeda, who served as co-showrunners on Season 1. Maeda stepped down ahead of Season 2, with Joe Tracz (known for A Series of Unfortunate Events) taking his place, and Owens later confirmed his departure after completing work on the second season. Now it's announced Ian Stokes (Teen Wolf, Luke Cage) will join Tracz as co-showrunner for Season 3. While awaiting season 2, you can rewatch season 1, which is streaming on Netflix, and follow the adventure of Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirates.
