Dodgers snap 18-inning scoreless drought to beat Rays 3-0 and win the series
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Freddie Freeman scored one run and drove in another to snap Los Angeles' 18-inning scoreless drought and lead the Dodgers over the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0 on Sunday.
Andy Pages singled off Mason Englert (0-1) in the sixth to drive in Freddie Freeman, who extended his on-base streak to 18 games with a first-inning single and added another RBI single in the seventh to make it 2-0. He had three hits on the day and seven RBIs in the series, which the Dodgers won two games to one.
Shohei Ohtani doubled and scored on Mookie Betts' sacrifice fly in the ninth.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto (10-7) held the Rays scoreless over 5 2/3 innings, scattering five hits and striking out six. Ben Casparius earned his second big-league save, coming in with the bases loaded in the ninth to get Yandy Diaz out.
Dodgers second baseman Tommy Edman left the game in the fifth with a right ankle sprain.
Tampa Bay starter Joe Boyle held the Dodgers scoreless for five innings, working around three hits and two walks. He struck out two.
Ohtani beat out a chopper for a single in the seventh and then stole second and third to be in position to score on Freeman's RBI single.
0-for-16. Mookie Betts went hitless in the series and is now hitless in four straight games. He was dropped out of the leadoff spot.
Monday night in Los Angeles, the Dodgers send Tyler Glasnow (1-1, 3.98 ERA) to the mound against the Cardinals. The Rays will debut Adrian Houser (6-2, 2.10) against the Angels.

Katie Stewart credits Lincoln-Way East's competition after leading Texas to national title. ‘Really helped me.'
Showing off a powerful swing and a consistent ability to come through in the most important moments, Lincoln-Way East alum Katie Stewart shined on softball's biggest stage. Stewart helped Texas win its first softball national championship. And what a ride it was. 'Honestly, I still don't think it's set in yet,' Stewart said. 'It's everything I ever dreamed of as a little girl. To win a national championship, and even to play in that game, was everything I could have ever dreamed of and more.' The Longhorns beat in-state foe Texas Tech 10-4 in the third and deciding game of the Women's College World Series on June 6 in Oklahoma City. Stewart, a sophomore utility player, delivered an RBI single and a run-scoring double and scored a run — all in the first three innings — as Texas rolled to a 10-0 lead. 'It just felt so good to be able to produce for my team when they needed it,' Stewart said. 'To play a part in us scoring runs, that was everything I needed to do. I did my job. 'Anything that happened after that didn't matter as long as we came out on top.' In the seventh inning, after Texas Tech had rallied a bit to get within 10-4, Stewart made another big play, throwing out a runner at third base from left field for the second out of the inning. That was followed by a game-ending groundout, starting the Longhorns' party. 'Closing out the game, we were just trying to stay clean,' Stewart said. 'To keep my head in the game, stay focused and be able to get that girl out at third, I was proud of myself. 'When we finally got that last out, we could finally relax and I was so excited to celebrate with my team.' Lincoln-Way East coach Elizabeth Hyland was having a blast watching her pupil reach the top of the college softball world. 'I think it's an amazing experience for her and her family and for our community,' Hyland said. 'We couldn't be more excited and happy for her.' For the season, Stewart hit .381 with 17 home runs and 80 RBIs. She improved on a strong freshman year in 2024, when she batted .369 with 13 homers and 58 RBIs. 'Last year was last year so I had to grow to continue to be successful,' Stewart said. 'I used last year as a stepping stone and my confidence went up as this season went on. 'By the end of this season, I was very confident in myself and I wasn't too worried about the results because I knew what I had done the whole year.' It's certainly not easy for a young player to go into a powerhouse program and make an impact right away like Stewart has, but Hyland isn't surprised. 'I knew she was very capable of it and her determination alone gave her that capability,' Hyland said. 'It's her mindset, her demeanor and her approach to the game and then just being so modest. I mean, the girl is as nice as can be.' Stewart credited her experiences at Lincoln-Way East and tough competition in the Southland with getting her ready for the next level. 'A lot of teams in the area had a lot of really good pitching,' Stewart said. 'Even when I didn't have my best game against those girls, that struggle really helped me prepare for college. 'When I have a bad day in college, I know how to learn from it and be better next time.' Texas finished as the national runner-up last season. This spring, with Stewart coming through in the clutch, there was no falling short. 'It was our goal to finally do it this year,' Stewart said. 'We wanted our seniors to go out on top. It feels amazing.'

Barcelona strips Ter Stegen of captaincy for refusing to sign medical report
MADRID (AP) — Barcelona has temporarily stripped goalkeeper Marc-André Ter Stegen of the captaincy over his refusal to sign a medical report about his back injury. The club said Thursday that central defender Ronald Araujo will act as first-team captain until further notice. 'Following the disciplinary proceedings opened against player Marc-André ter Stegen, and until this matter is definitively resolved, the club, by mutual agreement with the sporting direction and the coaching staff, has decided to temporarily withdraw his role as first-team captain,' Barcelona said in a statement. The club had opened a disciplinary proceeding against the goalkeeper on Tuesday after discrepancies about the recovery time for the lower back surgery that Ter Stegen successfully underwent last week. Barcelona needed him to sign the injury report so it could be sent to the Spanish league in order to clear some salary-cap space and allow the club to more easily register other players without breaching financial fair play rules. Ter Stegen said ahead of the surgery that the recovery time would be about three months. The club did not give an official timetable for the recovery process, saying only that the operation was 'successful" and that 'his recovery will determine when he can return.' Depending on the length of the recovery process, Barcelona could clear a percentage of Ter Stegen's salary from its cap, making more room to add other players to the squad. The league has to evaluate the report before approving the official time of recovery. The club signed Espanyol goalkeeper Joan García in June. Its other goalkeepers are veteran Wojciech Szczęsny and Iñaki Peña. Ter Stegen met briefly with Barcelona officials this week, according to Spanish media. The 33-year-old German goalkeeper missed nearly all of last season because of a ruptured tendon in his knee, and in 2023 he missed about two months because of another back operation. Peña and the 35-year-old Szczęsny started in place of Ter Stegen last season. ___

Max Scherzer vs. Clayton Kershaw: A rare showdown between 3,000-strikeout pitchers
LOS ANGELES — Max Scherzer vs. Clayton Kershaw sounds like an enticing postseason matchup in October. Fans won't have to wait that long. The likely Hall of Famers square off in a rare contest between the most recent members of baseball's 3,000-strikeout club. 'You probably aren't going to see that very often these days,' Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. 'I have a lot of respect for Max. It'll be good to see him and hopefully we can have our way with him.' Scherzer is, alongside his left-handed opponent, perhaps one of this generation's greatest pitchers. He and Kershaw have each won World Series titles and are three-time Cy Young Award winners. Scherzer, 41, is an eight-time All-Star, while the 37-year-old Kershaw has 11 All-Star appearances, including this year as a Legend Pick by Commissioner Rob Manfred. Scherzer became the 19th member of the 3,000-strikeout club while pitching for the Dodgers in September 2021. Kershaw joined him as the 20th member. The duo, along with Justin Verlander, are the only active pitchers to reach the 3,000-strikeout mark. 'I loved playing with him. I love competing against him. I have all the respect in the world for him,' Scherzer said from Colorado, where the Toronto Blue Jays earned a sweep. 'We've been pitching for so long, you don't know how many more chances you are going to get at this, to face somebody of his ilk. This is what you dream of, facing the best. It should be a lot of fun.' But such a high-stakes duel doesn't always live up to the anticipation. In September 2023, Scherzer and Verlander squared off for the first time in a matchup of 200-game winners. Scherzer, then with Texas, didn't make it to the fourth inning. Verlander, also a three-time Cy Young Award winner who was then with Houston, scattered six hits over seven innings. Rookie left-hander Jack Dreyer has a locker just a few feet from Kershaw's in the Dodgers clubhouse. He also played against Scherzer last season in a rehab outing. 'The way they go about their business is what separates them. To an extent there's the talent, but they also just work harder than everybody else, especially Kersh,' Dreyer said. 'It's not always easy to listen to guys if they're talking to you about how to get better but you don't see them doing it. With him, it's just so easy because I see him working his butt off every single day. He's the easiest guy in the world to learn from.' Blue Jays bench coach Don Mattingly will be watching Scherzer and Kershaw, who he managed in LA from 2011-15. 'They work. They are detailed in what they want to do,' Mattingly said in Colorado. Mattingly credits then-Dodgers pitching coach Rick Honeycutt for helping Kershaw develop a slider to add to the primary fastball-changeup mix that he used early in his 18-year career. 'Just that two-pitch combo is tough. Umps miss that curveball because it is big. So they'd 'ball' it on him,' Mattingly said. 'Then he came with the slider, which really changed him, being able to get down under the right-hander. Speed them up a little bit, and then that curveball was kind of a putaway when he had that going.' The series opener at Dodger Stadium is a matchup of division leaders. The Blue Jays lead the AL East by four games over Boston. The Dodgers' NL West lead over San Diego has shriveled to two. And that's ultimately what matters to Scherzer. 'If you start putting the importance on this matchup with them and put your attention toward this, you are going to overlook some other things,' he said. 'They won the World Series last year. They're the champs. You want a shot at the champs. You want to beat them. That's what this game is about.'
