Nunez leaves Liverpool to join Saudi's Al-Hilal - World
Liverpool sold striker Darwin Nunez to Saudi side Al-Hilal, both clubs confirmed on Saturday, in a move that could allow the Premier League champions to make a fresh bid for Newcastle's Alexander Isak. Nunez joined the Reds for an initial 75 million euros ($87 million, £65 million) from Benfica three years ago but has failed to live up to that price tag. The Uruguayan scored 40 goals in 143 appearances but slipped down the pecking order at Anfield under both Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot. According to reports in the British media, Al-Hilal will pay an initial 53 million euros for the 26-year-old. Liverpool FC can confirm Darwin Nunez has completed a permanent transfer to Al-Hilal, subject to international clearance. Everybody at the club would like to thank Darwin for his contributions and wish him and his family all the best for the future. — Liverpool FC (@LFC) August 9, 2025 "Al-Hilal Club Company is pleased to announce the signing of Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez from Liverpool FC on a three-year contract," Al-Hilal said in a statement. Al-Hilal Signs Uruguayan Player Darwin Nunez 📃 — AlHilal Saudi Club (@Alhilal_EN) August 9, 2025 Nunez was likely to play even less this season after Liverpool signed Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz as part of a 300 million euro spending spree that also includes full-backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong. However, the club could still break the British transfer record by signing Isak. Liverpool reportedly had a first bid of £110 million rejected, with Newcastle demanding a fee of up to £150 million for the Swedish striker. The sale of Nunez would take Liverpool's income for transfer sales this window to nearly 200 million euros after the departures of Luis Diaz, Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Tyler Morton. Nunez is the latest big name to join Al-Hilal, who shocked Manchester City to reach the quarter-finals of the recent Club World Cup. Coached by former Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi, the Saudi club's squad includes Portuguese internationals Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo, Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly and former Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic. Egypt's Mo Salah criticizes UEFA over tribute to murdered 'Palestinian Pele' - Talents Abroad
Liverpool Egyptian international star Mohamed Salah publicly challenged the European football's governing body 'UEFA' following the death of Suleiman Al-Obeid, a celebrated Palestinian footballer known as the 'Palestinian Pele'. Al-Obeid, 41-year-old, was killed last week in an Israeli strike on civilians while waiting for humanitarian aid in southern Gaza, according to the Palestine Football Association (PFA). His death added to the mounting toll of sports figures and civilians killed amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza. He was a prominent figure in Palestinian football, with a career that spanned with clubs like Khadamat al-Shati, Gaza Sport, and Markaz Shabab Al-Am'ari. UEFA on Friday issued a brief message on X, paying homage to Al-Obeid, with a statement that read: 'Farewell to Suleiman al-Obeid, the 'Palestinian Pele'. A talent who gave hope to countless children, even in the darkest of times.' Can you tell us how he died, where, and why? — Mohamed Salah (@MoSalah) August 9, 2025 However, Salah found the tribute insufficient, with the Liverpool forward responding publicly, questioning, 'Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?' Salah then shared a screenshot of UEFA's post on his Instagram account, with over 65 million followers, escalating the pressure on international sports bodies to clarify the circumstances of Al-Obeid's death. The Egyptian international has previously called for urgent humanitarian intervention, condemning the violence and demanding aid access for the people of Gaza. Al-Obeid scored more than 100 goals in his career and earned 24 caps for Palestine, scoring twice, including a memorable scissor-kick goal during the 2010 West Asian Football Federation Championship. His nickname references his skill and resilience, with many praising his role as a symbol of hope in difficult times. The PFA says 421 footballers, 103 of them children, have been killed or died from starvation in Gaza and the surrounding regions since the war began, while 288 sports facilities have been damaged or destroyed, with global monitoring groups estimate that at least 662 athletes and their relatives have lost their lives. Despite these facts, UEFA's silence on the specific circumstances of his death has drawn widespread criticism. Salah, who donated to the Egyptian Red Crescent's Gaza relief efforts in 2023, has repeatedly highlighted the humanitarian crisis, as he urged world leaders in 2023 to intervene and facilitate aid deliveries after nearly 500 people died in a hospital explosion in Gaza. In a widely shared 2023 video he emphasized that all lives are sacred and called for an end to violence, urging international action to prevent further massacres, declaring: 'The massacres need to stop… Humanity must prevail.' The Liverpool star's public questioning of UEFA reflects his broader frustration with perceived inaction amid ongoing atrocities. Rodri will not make Manchester City return till September - World
Manchester City midfielder Rodri will not be at full fitness until after September's international break, Pep Guardiola has revealed. The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner missed most of last season due to ligament damage and without him City failed to mount a strong defence of their Premier League crown. The 29-year-old Spanish international fought his way back to fitness but suffered a groin injury in City's defeat to Saudi club Al-Hilal at the Club World Cup in the United States last month. "Rodri's getting better but he had a big injury in the last game against Al-Hilal and for the last five or six weeks," Guardiola said in comments released on Saturday. "He's training right now and in the last two or three days is better. Hopefully maybe the international break is when he will be really, really fit. "Hopefully, in the games (prior to that) he can play some minutes but the important thing is to not have pain because we don't want him to be come back and injured, come back and injured. "We will try desperately to avoid that but he's training the last two or three days with us and that's good." The City staff are also nursing Phil Foden and Mateo Kovacic back to fitness and both players joined Rodri in being left out of a pre-season game in Sicily this week. City face Wolves in their first Premier League game of the season next weekend and then play Tottenham and Brighton before the September internationals.
