Tata Consultancy Services to reduce workforce by 2%; Samsung signs $16.5 billion deal with Tesla; Women's dating app Tea hacked

Tata Consultancy Services to reduce workforce by 2% Tata Consultancy Services said over the weekend that it is planning to reduce its workforce by 2% in its 2026 financial year, meaning that around 12,200 jobs will be cut as part of this process. Those who are to be primarily affected include employees in middle and senior management, per the company. TCS's workforce stood at 6,13,069 as of the end of last month; its workforce grew by 5,000 employees during the April-June quarter, reported PTI. Those impacted by the layoffs will receive appropriate benefits, outplacement, counselling, and support, said TCS. India's IT sector is currently facing challenges as the country evaluates the effects of U.S. President Donald Trump's heavy tariffs and aggressive trade policies. The news was received with shock across social media platforms, as TCS intends to retrain and re-deploy staff as it plans to enter new markets, make new investments, and further adopt artificial intelligence (AI). TCS Chief Executive K. Krithivasan had also noted there were delays in client decision-making and project starts. Samsung signs $16.5 billion deal with Tesla Elon Musk confirmed on Monday that his EV-maker Tesla has signed a deal with Samsung in order to source chips, as the South Korean electronics maker tries to cope with a contract manufacturing business that is seeing losses. Though Samsung earlier announced the chip supply deal that was worth $16.5 billion, it did not name the global company it was partnering with, citing confidentiality about the details. However, sources shared the information about Tesla, which was later confirmed by Musk himself on X (previously Twitter). The deal is set to run through the end of 2033. However, it remains to be seen how U.S. tariffs may affect the implementation. Samsung is currently lagging in the race to make AI chips, with rivals such as TSMC and SK Hynix moving ahead in this area. Some of TSMC's major clients include Apple, Nvidia, and Qualcomm. Meanwhile, Samsung is the world's top memory chip maker. Women's dating app Tea hacked A dating app called Tea that was designed to let women vet their male partners or warn others about potential predators has been hacked, with the app reporting that about 72,000 images were leaked online, including 13,000 images of selfies or photo identification submitted as part of the user account verification process. In addition to this, about 59,000 images were also accessed, sparking fears that the women featured in them could be tracked, threatened, doxxed, or even physically harmed. Before its hack, Tea soon surged in popularity and even reached the top spot on the U.S. Apple App Store, as women on the app tried to identify men they were dating who had a history of carrying out violence, sex crimes, fraud, or infidelity. Tea said that it engaged third-party cybersecurity experts and was working around the clock to secure its systems after the hack.

The Tea app was intended to help women date safely. Then it got hacked

Tea, a provocative dating app designed to let women anonymously ask or warn each other about men they'd encountered, rocketed to the top spot on the U.S. Apple App Store this week. On Friday, the company behind the app confirmed it had been hacked: Thousands of images, including selfies, were leaked online. 'We have engaged third-party cybersecurity experts and are working around the clock to secure our systems,' San Francisco-based Tea Dating Advice Inc. said in a statement. 404 Media, which earlier reported the breach, said it was 4Chan users who discovered an exposed database that 'allowed anyone to access the material' from Tea. The app and the breach highlight the fraught nature of seeking romance in the age of social media. Tea founder Sean Cook, a software engineer who previously worked at Salesforce and Shutterfly, says on the app's website that he founded the company in 2022 after witnessing his own mother's 'terrifying'' experiences. Cook said they included unknowingly dating men with criminal records and being 'catfished'' — deceived by men using false identities. Tea markets itself as a safe way for women to anonymously vet men they might meet on dating apps such as Tinder or Bumble — ensuring that the men are who they say they are, not criminals and not already married or in a relationship. "It's like people have their own little Yelp pages,'' said Aaron Minc, whose Cleveland firm, Minc Law, specialises in cases involving online defamation and harassment. In an Apple Store review, one woman wrote that she used a Tea search to investigate a man she'd begun talking to and discovered 'over 20 red flags, including serious allegations like assault and recording women without their consent.'' She said she cut off communication. 'I can't imagine how things could've gone had I not known," she wrote. A surge in social media attention over the past week pushed Tea to the No. 1 spot on Apple's U.S. App Store as of July 24, according to Sensor Tower, a research firm. In the seven days from July 17-23, Tea downloads shot up 525% compared to the week before. Tea said in an Instagram post that it had reached 4 million users. A female columnist for The Times of London newspaper, who signed into the app, on Thursday called Tea a 'man-shaming site'' and complained that 'this is simply vigilante justice, entirely reliant on the scruples of anonymous women. With Tea on the scene, what man would ever dare date a woman again?'' 'Over the last couple of weeks, we've gotten hundreds of calls on it. It's blown up,' attorney Minc said. "People are upset. They're getting named. They're getting shamed.'' In 1996, Congress passed legislation protecting websites and apps from liability for things posted by their users. But the users can be sued for spreading 'false and defamatory'' information, Minc said. In May, however, a federal judge in Illinois threw out an invasion-of-privacy lawsuit by a man who'd been criticised by women in the Facebook chat group 'Are We Dating the Same Guy,″ Bloomberg Law reported. State privacy laws could offer another avenue for bringing legal action against someone who posted your photograph or other personal information in a harmful way, Minc said. In its statement, Tea reported that about 72,000 images were leaked online, including 13,000 images of selfies or photo identification that users submitted during account verification. Another 59,000 images that were publicly viewable in the app from posts, comments and direct messages were also accessed, according to the company's statement. No email addresses or phone numbers were exposed, the company said, and the breach only affects users who signed up before February 2024. 'At this time, there is no evidence to suggest that additional user data was affected. Protecting tea users' privacy and data is our highest priority,' Tea said. It said users did not need to change their passwords or delete their accounts. "All data has been secured.'' Lawyer Minc said he was not surprised to see Tea get targeted. 'These sites get attacked,'' he said. 'They create enemies. They put targets on themselves where people want to go after them.''

Cooperative banks play a pivotal role in economy, says Sridhar Babu

Hyderabad: IT and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu emphasised that cooperative banks in Telangana operate not for profit, but to serve community interests. He said that they follow the CARE model (Community-focused, Affordable & Accessible Credit, Relationship-based banking, Empowering Local Entrepreneurs). While formally inaugurating the Agrasen Bank's Ameerpet branch on Sunday, the Minister said that in support of this sector, the State Government has adopted the P.A.T.H. Framework: Policy Support, Access to Digital Tools, Training & Capacity Building and Hybrid Finance Ecosystems. 'This initiative promotes schemes such as self-employment loans for youth and underprivileged communities, financial linkages for women's self-help groups, and green loans,' he explained. The Minister said that there was a time when banks were merely associated with deposits and withdrawals. However, that definition has significantly evolved. 'Today, banks are leveraging technology to meet the changing needs and aspirations of customers, offering a wide range of services. Cooperative banks, in particular, have emerged as crucial institutions in the economic landscape—especially in delivering financial services to marginalized sections of society. According to the RBI Annual Report 2024, over 85 million citizens across the country now use cooperative banking services. The total deposits and advances in this sector have surpassed`5.5 lakh crore,' the Sridhar Babu highlighted. 'There are 48 Urban Cooperative Banks in Telangana, operating through 321 branches across urban and semi-urban regions. Their total business turnover for the previous financial year stood at Rs 17,000 crore, with a credit-deposit ratio of 66.7%. Branches in Kukatpally, Malakpet, and Ameerpet remain particularly active,' he added.
