Couple died with their two dogs when their car plummeted 300ft off a cliff

Two people killed when their car went over the edge of a cliff on the Isle of Wight at the weekend were a bus driver and his frail wife, neighbours have said.
The couple, named locally as John and Lynne King, died when their silver Ford Mondeo plunged 300ft from atop the rock face close to the Needles late on Friday. Their two Dachshund dogs were also in the car with them.
Neighbours said John was a bus driver who knew the area and its roads 'like the back of his hand' and 'doted on his wife', who was described as 'really, really frail'.
One said recalled seeing him helping his wife into the car with the dogs on Friday afternoon, saying: 'That was the last time I saw them. They never came home.'
The neighbour described seeing John regularly but reported only seeing Lynne 'maybe twice in the three years they'd been living in the road'.
'She wasn't well. I don't know exactly what she was suffering from but I think it was serious. John was effectively her carer. I never saw nurses or medically trained staff ever go in. I think he did everything for her,' they told MailOnline.
In hindsight, they said the crash 'may have been planned', recalling how John cut the grass 'for the first time in three years' days before he died, adding: 'To me, he seemed like he was getting things in order.
'Then on Friday he took his wife and dogs out in the car – which he never did before – and that was the last we saw of them.'
Police, firefighters, paramedics and coastguards all attended the scene.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police said: 'We can confirm the death of two people, a woman and a man aged 66 and 67 respectively, following an incident at The Needles on the Isle of Wight on Friday, June 6.
'We were called at 7.21pm after a Ford Mondeo, which was being driven along Alum Bay New Road, left the road, came off the cliff top and came to rest in the water below. Two dogs, both Dachshund's, were also in the car and died in the incident. More Trending
'Formal identification procedures are ongoing, but next of kin have been notified. A Post-Mortem examination will take place on Tuesday 10 June.
'As part of the ongoing investigation into the incident, which has been referred to the Coroner, officers have been carrying out enquiries at an address on Arctic Road, Cowes to help them to establish what happened.'
Police said the vehicle had been driving along the road that leads to The Needles, one of Britain's best-known coastal spots.
The world-famous Isle of Wight Needles is a row of three stacks of chalk that rise about 30 metres above the water.

Dad charged with murder after leaving daughter, 1, inside hot car for nine hours

Joseph Boatman, 32, allegedly left the tot inside the vehicle for nine hours after consuming 'multiple' alcoholic beverages - and while temperatures that day reached a scorching 35C A dad has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder after his one-year-old daughter died in a hot car where she was left for over nine hours. Joseph Boatman, from Louisiana, allegedly left the tot in the vehicle after consuming "multiple" alcoholic beverages - and when temperatures in Madisonville, Kentucky, that day reached a scorching 35C, with a heat index of 40C. The 32-year-old man was taken into custody on Sunday after deputies from the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office responded to a call just before noon. A family member had discovered the unresponsive toddler still strapped in her car seat. Officers say Boatman picked up his daughter from a relative's home early that morning after he "consumed multiple alcoholic beverages." He allegedly placed the child in a car seat around 2:30am, then "went back inside the residence and never returned to the vehicle," according to the sheriff's office. "This is a devastating loss that no family ever wants to face," said Sheriff Randy Smith. "When a child is left in a vehicle, especially on a day when the heat index climbs over 100 degrees, the outcome can turn deadly in a matter of minutes. This case involved compromised judgment, and the result was heartbreaking." Boatman is currently being held on a $75,000 (£55,000) cash bond, according to his arrest report. This is not his first encounter with the law, as he is a registered sex offender and was previously convicted of online solicitation of a minor, MailOnline reports. In June 2019, Boatman was arrested as part of "Operation Broken Heart," a nationwide effort led by the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry's Bureau of Investigation. Boatman's daughter is the fifth child in the US to die in a hot car this year, according to data from Kids and Car Safety. The non-profit reports that since 1990, at least 1,130 children have died in hot vehicles, with an additional 75,000 surviving with injuries. On average, 38 children die each year in hot cars - 88% of them aged three or younger.

Rough sleeping to be decriminalised with 1824 law finally scrapped

Rough sleeping will no longer be a crime in the UK as the government abolishes a 'cruel' 200-year-old law. The Vagrancy Act 1824 was introduced amid a spiralling homelessness crisis after the Industrial Revolution. Most of the act has been repealed, though some are still in force in England and Wales to police begging and rough sleeping. But the government announced today it will scrap the bill 'for good' by Spring next year. On any given night last autumn, 4,667 people were sleeping rough, a 164% increase from 2010, according to official figures. In 2023, 298 people were convicted under the act. The Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner said: 'We are drawing a line under nearly two centuries of injustice towards some of the most vulnerable in society, who deserve dignity and support. More Trending 'No one should ever be criminalised simply for sleeping rough and by scrapping this cruel and outdated law, we are making sure that can never happen again.' Matt Downie, chief executive of Crisis, said: 'This is a landmark moment that will change lives and prevent thousands of people from being pushed into the shadows, away from safety. 'For 200 years, the Vagrancy Act has meant that people who are homeless are treated as criminals and second-class citizens. It has punished people for trying to stay safe and done nothing to address why people become homeless in the first place. 'Ending the use of the Vagrancy Act recognises a shameful history of persecuting people for poverty and destitution, something that figures like William Wilberforce and Winston Churchill warned against in their opposition to the Act.' British couple 'tried to smuggle £1,000,000 of cannabis into UK from Thailand'

A British couple have been charged with trying to smuggle £1 million worth of cannabis into the UK from Thailand. Daniel McDonald, 36, and Sian Warren, 34, were detained after landing at Heathrow Airport on May 27. Four of their cases are said to have been packed with 51kg of cannabis. The pair, from Salford in Greater Manchester, were charged with importing class B drugs and appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates Court last week. They were bailed and will next appear at Isleworth Crown Court on June 26. The couple had been on a dream holiday in Asia, Sian's dad Tony said. He told the Sun his daughter 'has not brought anything back, definitely not', adding: 'She had her own suitcases with clothes in it.' Theirs is the latest in a series of high-profile cases concerning Brits accused of smuggling drugs overseas. Bella May Culley faces a maximum sentence of 20 years or life imprisonment in Georgia if she is convicted over a cannabis haul worth £200,000. Her case was followed by that of Charlotte May Lee, 21, who is currently in prison in Sri Lanka, also accused of trying to run the drug out of Thailand. More Trending The former cabin crew worker, from Coulsdon, south London is accused of attempting to smuggle 101lb (46kg) of synthetic kush worth £1.2 million in two suitcases. Last month, a British couple were arrested in Spain after 32kg of cannabis was discovered in two suitcases. Hours later, an electrician from Cumbria narrowly escaped a death sentence in Bali after initial drug trafficking charges against him were dropped, and instead replaced with hiding information from the authorities. A British pensioner was also arrested in Chile after allegedly attempting to smuggle five kilos of methamphetamine.
