Rally taken out in Rameswaram to mark 75th anniversary of National Sample Survey
The National Statistics Office (NSO) sub regional office – Virudhunagar conducted a public rally at Rameswaram on Tuesday.
The aim of the rally which was taken out to mark the 75th anniversary of the National Sample Survey (NSS) was to raise awareness among public of the ill-effects of drug abuse and to highlight the achievements of NSS and its role in evidence-based policy making.
While the rally was led by V. Rethinam, Assistant Director, NSO-Virudhunagar, Fire and Rescue Services officer R. Appash flagged off the rally.
Mr. Rethinam spoke about the role of NSS, and several works carried out by it and its importance in the development of the nation. 'Socio-economic survey, urban frame survey, annual survey of unincorporated enterprises, consumer price and wholesale price surveys, periodic labour force survey, annual survey of industries, agricultural surveys, etc., are some of the surveys conducted by the NSS,' he added.
The surveys conducted would provide valuable data required for planning, policy formulation and understanding of the country's economic and social landscape, Mr. Rethinam said. 'It also plays a crucial role in generating data for various sectors, including social statistics, economic statistics, demographic statistics, industrial statistics, and agricultural statistics,' he said.
He urged the public and officials for better cooperation for the smooth conduct of surveys which were essential for each and every government programme and scheme.
Madurai
In Madurai, NSS officials conducted a village community discussion at Boothakudi. Regional Office Director Vishnuraj, Block Development Officer Porselvi and Village Administrative Officer Balamurugan and other officials from various departments addressed the gathering.

Miyawaki forest launched to mark World Environment Day
Mangaluru: A green initiative to mark World Environment Day 2025, Nitte (Deemed to be University) wasinaugurated a Miyawaki forest on its campus, reaffirming its commitment to environmental sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The forest was formally launched on June 5 by Dr. Pratap Lingaiah, State NSS Officer, Youth Empowerment and Sports Department, Government of Karnataka. Spread across 6,534 sq. ft within the university premises, the Nitte Miyawaki Forest features native species such as neem, kadamba, mango, golden shower, Ashoka, kokum, jackfruit, red sandalwood, and cinnamon. The Miyawaki method, pioneered by Japanese botanist Dr. Akira Miyawaki, is known for promoting dense, fast-growing forests using indigenous species that achieve self-sustainability within just two to three years. This initiative is part of the university's broader green mission, which has gained international recognition. Nitte University was ranked in the 301–400 band globally in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for its progress on the SDGs, and secured the 252nd position worldwide in the 2024 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. The university's adoption of the Miyawaki model underscores its proactive approach to ecological restoration and public awareness, aligning with this year's global theme of 'Ecosystem Restoration.'

Vishnu Institute of Technology celebrates Environment Day

Trees must be nurtured responsibly, says KU Rector
Krishna University (Krishna District): Prof MV Basaveswara Rao, Rector of Krishna University, emphasised that simply planting trees isn't enough; true results come only when the responsibility of nurturing them is taken. He made this clear during a large-scale tree planting drive on Thursday, held on the university campus as part of Vana Mahotsavam (Forest Festival). Speaking at the event, he urged all teaching and non-teaching staff at the university to compulsorily take on the responsibility of protecting the planted saplings. The programme saw the participation of Controller of Examinations Dr P Veera Brahmachari, NSS programme officers Dr Swaroopa, Dr Sesha Reddy, Dr Shanti Krupa and Dr Ravi, along with other teaching and non-teaching staff.
