Hybrid mutual fund schemes' inflow moderates in FY25; number of investors, AUM soar

Business Mayor28-04-2025

Hybrid mutual fund schemes attracted Rs 1.19 lakh crore in 2024-25, 18 per cent lower than the preceding fiscal, owing to market turbulence in the second half of FY25 triggered by corporate earnings slowdown and geo-political tensions. Despite the moderation in inflow, the category has seen a robust increase in both the number of investors and assets under management (AUM) during FY25 compared to those in the preceding fiscal, data with the Association of Mutual Funds in India (Amfi) showed. A key factor contributing to this resilience is the drawdown protection provided by the debt component of hybrid schemes.
'The drawdown protection offered by the debt component of hybrid schemes is a key reason, as it allows investors to stay invested without the stress that comes with pure equity volatility. The NAVs (net asset valued) of hybrid funds typically experience lower drawdowns compared to equity funds, making them a preferred choice for investors seeking a more stable journey,' Trivesh D, COO of Tradejini, said.
Hybrid mutual funds schemes have experienced an increase in the number of investors, with the number of folios reaching 1.56 crore in March 2025 from 1.35 crore a year earlier, adding an investor base of more than 33 lakh.
This shows investors' inclination for hybrid funds.
This was complemented with assets under management (AUM) of the category increasing to Rs 8.83 lakh crore as of March 2025 from Rs 7.23 lakh crore in FY24, showing a 22 per cent growth. Overall, the industry added more than Rs 12 lakh crore to a record AUM of Rs 65.74 lakh crore as of March 2025. Hybrid funds are mutual fund schemes that typically invest in a combination of equity and debt securities and sometimes in other asset categories such as gold. According to the industry data, the hybrid category saw net inflows of Rs 1.19 lakh crore in FY25 compared to an inflow of Rs 1.45 lakh crore in FY24. However, the category experienced an outflow of Rs 18,813 crore in FY23. Read More Tabula IM launches Global High Yield Fallen Angels ETF
'We have seen a slight dip in net inflows from Rs 1.45 trillion in FY24 to Rs 1.19 trillion in FY25. The slowdown in inflows majorly happened in second half of the FY25 due to market turbulence driven by corporate earnings slowdown, election uncertainty and geopolitical tensions and another major reason was dip in NFOs in this category,' Feroze Azeez, Joint CEO, Anand Rathi Wealth Ltd, said.
FY24 higher inflows in this category was driven by higher NFO (New Fund Offer), with 21 NFOs in FY24, whereas in FY25, the NFO count declined to 12, which led to slower inflows, he added.
Hybrid funds appeal more to investors with a moderate or low-risk profile. These funds are good investment options as they reduce the volatility associated when participating in equity markets while simultaneously providing stability in the fixed-income market.
Additionally, huge interest was garnered by hybrid schemes following a change in taxation for debt funds.
Looking ahead to FY26, with rate cycle uncertainty, global risk-off cues, and elevated domestic valuations, Trivesh of Tradejini believes investors will prioritise funds that offer both growth and cushion.
Anand Rathi Wealth's Azeez recommended investors to build a strategy-based portfolio with an 80:20 asset mix across equity and debt, which helps ride volatile markets comfortably as it reduces the volatility and improves the stability and liquidity in the portfolio.

Texmaco Rail & Engineering bags Rs 44 crore order from MRVC for traction-transformer works

By Aditya Bhagchandani Published on June 10, 2025, 17:34 IST Texmaco Rail & Engineering has informed the exchanges that it has won a contract worth Rs 44.04 crore from Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) to supply, construct, install, test and commission traction transformers, sectioning posts (SPs) and related works for the third and fourth lines of Central Railway. In its disclosure, the company said the project involves setting up a 1×25 kV, 110/25 kV traction sub-station with 40/56 MVA AC traction transformers and two sectioning posts, together with all associated civil and electrical works. The work is entirely domestic, carries no related-party element, and must be completed within 18 months. Texmaco Rail & Engineering added that neither its promoter group nor any of its group companies holds an interest in MRVC. The order, awarded via a letter dated 9 June 2025, will be executed under the terms laid out in SEBI's November 2024 disclosure framework. This contract further strengthens the company's railway-electrification portfolio at a time when Indian Railways continues to expand high-capacity suburban corridors. Medicines, tractors emerge as sticking points in scrapping 12% GST slab: Report

According to a Moneycontrol report, efforts to scrap the 12 percent Goods and Services Tax (GST) slab have run into resistance, with medicines and tractors emerging as key sticking points due to their socio-economic impact and potential revenue implications. Sources told Moneycontrol that while there is consensus to eliminate the 12 percent GST bracket entirely, states are grappling with the potential revenue loss, estimated at Rs 3,000–4,000 crore, particularly if essential items like medicines and tractors are shifted to lower or exempted tax brackets. In order to rationalise the GST structure, most items under the 12 percent slab are proposed to be shifted either to the 5 percent or 18 percent categories. However, Moneycontrol reports that medicines—including allopathic, ayurvedic, homeopathic, veterinary drugs, diagnostic kits, and surgical dressings—pose a revenue risk if moved to the 5 percent slab. This change would add significantly to the shortfall. According to Moneycontrol , tractors also complicate the equation. As agricultural equipment, they cannot be taxed at 18 percent, and the prevailing recommendation is to exempt them altogether—without input tax credit (ITC)—to avoid tax inversion. Tax inversion, as explained in the report, occurs when the tax rate on inputs is higher than on final goods, leading to unutilised ITC and affecting business cash flow. A government official told Moneycontrol , 'There is consensus on removal of the 12 percent slab, but a Rs 3,000-4,000 crore revenue loss has to be made up from some other items. Most items can be moved out, but these two – medicines and tractors – are the sticking point.' To bridge this gap, the GST Council has considered increasing taxes on luxury items like high-end footwear and premium goods. But Moneycontrol cites government sources as saying that the low consumption in these segments means they cannot compensate for the anticipated shortfall. 'On luxury goods like high-end shoes, it was discussed to increase tax to compensate for this revenue loss, but consumption is low and is not covering the Rs 4,000 crore gap,' the source said. As per Moneycontrol , this creates a delicate balancing act for the Council. Medicines are considered essential and a hike would impact affordability and accessibility, especially for low-income families. Tractors are similarly vital for the agricultural sector and any cost escalation would burden farmers. The long-standing goal of GST reform is to simplify the rate structure. According to Moneycontrol , a three-rate structure—5 percent, 18 percent, and 28 percent (for demerit goods)—remains under serious consideration, but reconciling it with economic realities remains challenging.
