Barrie celebrates Seniors' Month with free activities
If you were a senior when Barrie started celebrating Seniors' Month 41 years ago, keep going, you're on a roll.
For the rest of us, we're just 35-year-olds stuck in these old bodies, wondering what the heck happened.
Barrie is celebrating June as Seniors' Month, by thanking older adults for the contributions they've made.
'Barrie's seniors helped build the beautiful city we're proud to call home,' said Mayor Alex Nuttall. 'Their impact is seen and felt in every corner of our community. They are the backbone of Barrie.
'Seniors' Month is our chance to recognize and celebrate the incredible contributions seniors have made through many of the activities offered by the city to reflect how deeply Barrie values and appreciates the vital role seniors play in our community.'

A bold new look for Simcoe County's historical archives
The Simcoe County Archives are open to the public after major renovations. Mon., Aug. 11, 2025. PHOTO: Simcoe County A look back into the history of Simcoe County starts in the archives. Among the treasures preserved in the Simcoe County Archives are the first known butter tart recipe published in a cookbook (1900) and one of the earliest photographs of a Canadian women's hockey team (1896). There's also documentation of local involvement in the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837 and newspapers dating back to 1847. Originally constructed in two phases in 1979 and again 1992, the facility had seen minimal structural changes until this recent year's renovations. After eight months of revitalization, the doors are once more open to the public. Key improvements include Revitalized Reading Room : Designed to be more welcoming and accessible, the updated space now features a small multi-purpose room and a self-serve reference library and microfilm area. These changes will streamline service delivery and improve the research experience. : Designed to be more welcoming and accessible, the updated space now features a small multi-purpose room and a self-serve reference library and microfilm area. Sustainable Flooring: Eco-friendly cork and marmoleum flooring have been installed throughout the facility, aligning with the County's commitment to sustainability. These renovations improve the physical infrastructure but also enhance workflow efficiency, enabling staff to make the archival material more readily available to researchers. In all, the Simcoe County Archives houses municipal records from the County of Simcoe, all 16 lower-tier municipalities, and Barrie, along with documents from over 30 historic townships, towns, and villages. The archival holdings take up 3.5 kilometres of shelving.

Elizabeth Zielger Public School not expected to open until 2027, school says
The closure of Elizabeth Ziegler Public School (EZPS) in Waterloo has been extended once again. The updated reopening date of the school is now set for September 2027, according to an update posted the school's website on July 22. Previously, messaging from the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) was that the expected reopening would be in September 2026. On EZPS' frequently asked questions web page, it says "The report from the structural engineering firm retained by the WRDSB confirms that we will not have occupancy of EZPS for the 2025-26 school year." The school says that the board is working with the provincial government on next steps and funding opportunities for the restoration of the school, and that "while we continue to wait for confirmation from the Ministry of Education, our goal is to reopen Elizabeth Ziegler PS on September 1, 2027." School plagued with structural issues The nearly 100-year-old school building was shut on March 4 when a large piece of concrete fell from the facade. But, according to an engineering report released in June, additional issues were discovered including steel-beamed headers, floor and roof joists that are moderately to severely corroded, posing "safety concerns to any occupants inside or around the building." The over 500 junior kindergarten to Grade 6 students and staff will be displaced. Some will stay on the school's property in portables, while others will be moved to neighbouring schools.
