SCO media, think tank summit highlights Shanghai Spirit for enhanced exchange
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Media and Think Tank Summit held its plenary session in Zhengzhou on Friday, emphasizing the importance of upholding the Shanghai Spirit and uniting the media and academia to advance exchange and cooperation within the SCO framework.
The ongoing SCO Media and Think Tank Summit is taking place in the capital of central China's Henan Province, beginning on Wednesday and ending on Sunday.
Themed 'Upholding the Shanghai Spirit to Build a More Beautiful Home,' the event gathered more than 400 representatives of nearly 200 media outlets, think tanks and government agencies from SCO member states, observer states and dialogue partners, as well as international and regional organizations.
Addressing the plenary session, Mo Gaoyi, deputy head of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and director of the State Council Information Office, called on all parties to actively promote the Shanghai Spirit.
As the SCO Summit in Tianjin approaches, the gathering of media and think tank representatives is of great significance to building a closer SCO community with a shared future, Mo said.
Fu Hua, president of Xinhua News Agency, expressed the readiness to fully leverage the advantages of media and think tanks to work with all parties in alignment with the SCO's common aspiration for joint development.
By highlighting areas of shared interest and common concern, presenting a panoramic and multidimensional narrative of how SCO countries are joining forces in the new era, Xinhua aims to contribute wisdom and strength to building a closer SCO community with a shared future, he said.
Peng Jinhui, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), and Henan's Party chief Liu Ning also spoke at the event.
A congratulatory letter from Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov was read out. In the letter, Japarov noted that media and think tanks play an important role in fostering trust and showcasing the spirit and culture of the SCO. He expressed confidence that the summit would further generate new ideas and initiatives aimed at promoting peace and sustainable development.
The summit is being co-hosted by Xinhua, the CASS and the Henan provincial government, under the guidance of the State Council Information Office.
At the summit, the SCO Media and Think Tank Summit Zhengzhou Consensus, a think tank report titled 'In Joint Stewardship of the Treasures of Human Civilization: China's Philosophy and Practice of Cultural Heritage Protection in the New Era,' and a think tank report on the research about building a community with a shared future for the SCO were released.

ASHGABAT, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov has proposed launching a global program for the transition to hydrogen energy covering the period 2030-2040. Speaking at the Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC3) on Tuesday, Berdimuhamedov suggested beginning discussions in 2026 on developing the program under the UN framework. China, Zimbabwe ink cooperation deal, food assistance package
HARARE, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- China and Zimbabwe on Wednesday signed an agreement on economic and technical cooperation and exchange of letters for a new batch of food assistance to boost Zimbabwe's socio-economic development and food security. Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa presided over the signing ceremony at the State House, where Zimbabwean Minister of Finance and Economic Development Mthuli Ncube thanked China for its continued support to various economic sectors in Zimbabwe. He said that the previous economic and technical cooperation agreement signed between the two countries in 2020 has supported, among other projects, the drilling of boreholes across the country and the implementation of the Juncao technology assistance project that helps Zimbabwean farmers to cultivate hybrid grass rich in protein. "The government of Zimbabwe sincerely appreciates and acknowledges the emergency food assistance continuously received from China," Ncube said. "Indeed, China has demonstrated that they are our all-weather friend through the invaluable support they have consistently rendered to the people of Zimbabwe." For his part, Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Zhou Ding said the agreements were a testimony of the resilient ties between the two countries and the affirmation of China's unwavering solidarity with Zimbabwe. He said the economic and technical cooperation agreement, as well as the food assistance, were part of the 17 cooperation agreements signed between China and Zimbabwe during Mnangagwa's state visit to China last year. "Time and again, we have proven that we are bound by a shared future, standing side by side through every trial. We cherish this profound and enduring friendship, and will continue to stand together in the face of all challenges," Zhou said. The Chinese ambassador noted that the comprehensive strategic partnership of cooperation between the two countries has flourished across all Zimbabwean sectors, bringing tangible benefits to both nations and setting a shining example for South-South cooperation. Rwanda agrees to receive up to 250 migrants under new deal with U.S.
KIGALI, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Rwanda has reached an agreement with the United States to receive up to 250 migrants, reaffirming its long-standing commitment to supporting displaced populations and promoting reintegration, a government official said Tuesday. "Nearly every Rwandan family has experienced the hardships of displacement, and our societal values are founded on reintegration and rehabilitation," government spokesperson Yolande Makolo told national broadcaster Rwanda TV. Under the agreement, Rwanda retains the authority to review and approve each proposed for resettlement. "Those approved will be provided with workforce training, health care, and accommodation support to jump start their lives in Rwanda, giving them the opportunity to contribute to one of the fastest growing economies in the world over the last decade," she said. The arrangement builds on Rwanda's established record of offering refuge to migrants and asylum seekers. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), between September 2019 and April 2025, Rwanda received 2,760 refugees and asylum seekers evacuated from Libya via the Emergency Transit Mechanism, through 21 evacuation flights. Most of those evacuated came from Eritrea, Somalia, Sudan, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Cameroon, Nigeria, Mali, and Chad. As of April 2025, more than 2,100 of them have been resettled to third countries, according to UNHCR.
