At WAVES 2025, Shah Rukh Khan charmed audiences with heartfelt humor as he spoke about the joys of fatherhood and being the 'joke' of his household.
Shah Rukh Khan, India's most beloved superstar and a global cultural icon, set the tone for day one of the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 with a refreshingly candid conversation about fame, family, and the often misunderstood experience of being 'at the top." Sharing the stage with his Om Shanti Om co-star Deepika Padukone, SRK spoke during a session titled The Journey: From Outsider to Ruler, moderated by Karan Johar, at Mumbai's Jio World Convention Centre.
What was expected to be a formal discussion on cinematic excellence quickly turned into an intimate, humorous, and heartfelt exchange, with Shah Rukh revealing some deeply personal—and deeply funny—truths about his life away from the spotlight.
King Khan once said it's lonely at the top but he today mentions that : It can never be lonely at the top if you can make your children laugh, and for those who don't have children please make your parents happy. #KINGKhanAtWaves pic.twitter.com/hWv40gyCKs — Shah Rukh Khan Universe Fan Club (@SRKUniverse) May 1, 2025
Addressing the oft-repeated phrase that it's 'lonely at the top," Shah Rukh disagreed entirely, attributing his emotional grounding to his family, especially his children. 'You're often asked if it's lonely at the top. But let me tell you this—if you can make your children laugh, or your parents laugh if you don't have kids, you will never be lonely," he said, drawing a thunderous round of applause from the audience.
He went on to describe the irreverent yet affectionate dynamic he shares with his children—Aryan, Suhana, and AbRam—and how they routinely turn his attempts at discipline into comedy. 'Main itna funny hoon mere bacchon ke liye (I'm so funny to my kids), that even when I try to scold them, they just laugh. I'll say something serious like, 'You have to be in bed by 10,' and they'll go, 'OMG, S R K!' I'm literally a joke in my own house."
As Deepika burst into laughter beside him, Shah Rukh recounted a time on the sets of Om Shanti Om when he had even tried to 'scold" her. 'I scolded Deepika too, back then! But no one takes me seriously," he added, grinning.
The session highlighted a softer, more introspective side of Shah Rukh Khan—one that audiences rarely get to see behind his magnetic on-screen persona. He spoke not just as a superstar, but as a father, a husband, and a man who has learned to laugh at himself, even at the height of global stardom.
The four-day WAVES Summit, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is envisioned as a global platform to elevate India's presence in the digital, film, and creative economy. The event has brought together over 10,000 delegates, including 1,000 creators, from more than 90 countries, and boasts a guest list that reads like the who's who of Indian cinema: Amitabh Bachchan, Rajinikanth, Chiranjeevi, Mohanlal, Hema Malini, Aamir Khan, Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Anil Kapoor, and many more.

India's biggest flop film released 18 years ago, saw debut of 2 star kids, made in Rs 45 crore, earned just Rs..., lead actors were..., movie is... Ranbir Kapoor made his Bollywood debut in the 2007 film Saawariya . The film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali also marked the Hindi debut of Sonam Kapoor. While movie brought together an ensemble cast, it failed to become a commercial as well as a critical success. Made in a budget of Rs 45 crore, Saawariya earned a modest Rs 39.22 crore. At the time, the film clashed with Shah Rukh Khan's Om Shanti Om , that marked Deepika Padukone's first Bollywood release. Farah Khan's directorial outperformed Sanjay Leela Bhansali's romantic drama, earning Rs 152 crore worldwide. Moreover, it also surpassed Aditya Chopra's Dhoom 2 at that time. Coming to Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor-starrer Saawariya, the film received mixed to negative reviews when released. While the artistic vision, soundtrack, production, songs and performances were praised, the story and screenplay lacked the depth and faced significant criticism. Salman Khan and Rani Mukerji also made their cameo appearances, and the film also marked the last appearance of both Zohra Sehgal and Begum Para before their demises. Reflecting on Sawariya's failure, Ranbir told IANS, 'My first film itself was a very big disaster, the disaster-ness was celebrated but somewhere as an actor and artiste I had a deep conviction that flops and hits won't matter to me. That gave me confidence.' He added, 'I have never felt competitive towards anybody. I have never felt that I am better or worse than anybody. I feel like I am running my own race. I feel like I have very strong views on how and what I want to do in my life, the kind of films I want to do. 'The kind of characters I want to portray and of course I am going to see a lot of failures.' Before becoming a huge Bollywood actor, Ranbir used to work behind-the-scenes as an assistant director for filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali in the 2005 film Black, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji.
