Former CJIs DY Chandrachud, JS Kehar to interact with JPC on One Nation One Poll on July 11
Sitting of the Joint Committee on the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
Members are informed that the next sitting of the Joint Committee on the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, will now be held on July 11.
The agenda of the Meeting is interaction with Justice JS Kehar, former Chief Justice of India, on the said Bills. Interaction with Justice DY Chandrachud, former Chief Justice of India, on the said Bills.
Interaction with Dr EM Sudarsana Natchiappan, former Rajya Sabha Member, former Chairman of the Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice and Senior Advocate on the said Bills.
Interaction with Dr Veerappa Moily, former Chief Minister of Karnataka, former Union Minister, former Chairman, 2nd Administrative Reforms Committee and former Chairman, Parliamentary Committee on Finance on the said Bills.
Earlier, Chairperson of JPC, ONOE, PP Chaudhary, held discussions with various stakeholders in five states, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh (Union Territory) over the issue of One Nation One Election. Meetings were held in Delhi, during which we had interactions with former CJIs UU Lalit, Ranjan Gogoi, former chief justices of various high courts and others.
Earlier, while speaking to ANI exclusively, PP Choudhary said, The committee believes that it should visit all states and hear their opinions, which is why the tour is being organised.
Reacting to the website launch, PP Chaudhary told ANI earlier that there should be 'transparency' and the entire Committee has agreed on this. 'There should be transparency. The entire Committee has agreed that we must keep transparency. The website will facilitate opinions from all the stakeholders. The committee took decisions on two major things, the advertisement will be printed in all languages so that all stakeholders can give their opinions.'
'Secondly, the website will facilitate inputs from all stakeholders... This is being examined by the Secretary General... The development of technology is taking time to ensure the website doesn't crash... The website will be launched soon with a QR code facility. Suggestions will be collected, and Parliamentarians will review them,' he added.
He further remarked that everyone has different opinions. 'There could be different opinions in the Committee too...One time will come when all the members will agree to it because all the leaders think for the nation and will agree over it for the nation's interest,' he said. (ANI)

76 killed in major highway crash in Afghanistan, 17 children among victims
Herat [Afghanistan], August 21 (ANI): At least 76 people, including 17 children, lost their lives in a devastating traffic accident in Herat province, making it one of the deadliest road tragedies in Afghanistan in recent years, Khaama Press reported. The incident took place on the Herat ring road in Guzara district when a passenger vehicle carrying Afghan migrants returning from Iran collided with a cargo truck and a motorcycle, officials confirmed. Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Wednesday pushed for reducing the minimum age to contest assembly elections from 25 to 21 years. He argued that younger leaders must be given space in lawmaking to drive India's future. Paying floral tributes to Rajiv Gandhi on his 81st birth anniversary at the late PM's statue opposite the secretariat, the CM said the move would carry forward Rajiv's vision of empowering youth. "It was Rajiv who gave voting right to every Indian above 18. Today, inspired by the same spirit, we want to give every 21-year-old the opportunity to shape lawmaking in legislative assemblies," Revanth said. High court agrees to hear PIL against Kothagudem corp formation
Hyderabad: A division bench of Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice GM Mohiuddin of the Telangana high court on Wednesday brushed aside objections raised by the court registry and agreed to hear a public interest litigation challenging the formation of the Kothagudem Municipal Corporation. The petition, filed by advocate and social worker J Shivaram Prasad of Paloncha, contests the Telangana Municipalities (Amendment) Act, 2025 and a subsequent govt order (GO No. 103, dated May 28, 2025) through which Kothagudem and Paloncha municipalities, along with seven gram panchayats of Sujathanagar mandal, were merged to create the new corporation. Petitioner's counsel Chikkudu Prabhakar argued that the merger is unconstitutional, illegal, and arbitrary as it includes Scheduled Areas, where the 74th constitutional amendment relating to municipalities does not apply. He contended that the move violates the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution, the Panchayat (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996, and several Supreme Court rulings safeguarding tribal rights. The PIL seeks to quash the amendment and the GO, restrain the govt from proceeding with ward delimitation and elections to the new corporation, and suspend all consequential steps until the matter is adjudicated. The bench directed the case to be listed for detailed hearing shortly. Land regularisation plea In a separate matter, the high court on Tuesday heard the state govt's plea to vacate an earlier stay order that has stalled the regularisation of certain agricultural land transactions. The govt submitted that under the Telangana Bhu Bharati Act- 2025, small and marginal farmers who purchased agricultural land through unregistered sale agreements prior to June 2, 2014, and have been in possession for more than 12 years, are eligible for ownership rights. It pointed out that applications for regularisation had earlier been accepted between Oct 12 and Nov 10, 2020, under the old Act, but an interim order of the high court had halted further processing. Appearing for the state, advocate general A Sudarshan Reddy argued that the interim order, passed in 2020, should now be lifted to enable the govt to process these pending applications under the new law. The counsel for the petitioner opposing such regularisation sought time to file a reply. The bench, comprising Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice GM Mohiuddin, posted the case to Aug 26 for further hearing.
