Farmer outfits launch protest ‘yatra' over pending irrigation projects in Srikakulam district

The Hindu02-05-2025
Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham and AP Koulu Rythu Sangham launched 'zeepu' yatra in Srikakulam on Friday to step up pressure on the government for the completion of pending irrigation projects in the district.
The leaders of the associations will tour in the vehicle in Vajrapukotturu, Palasa, Amadalavalasa, Narasannapeta, Patapatnam and other areas and highlight the inordinate delay in completion of the Vamsadhara phase-2 and other projects.
CPI(M) Srikakulam district secretary D. Govinda Rao, who formally inaugurated the rally, said that the successive governments had ignored the Vamsadhara phase-2 project which needed land acquisition in Odisha. He said that the A.P. government had failed to convince the neighbouring State over the land acquisition which could be done quickly since the requirement was only around 200 acres. He said that the Neradi barrage would be a lifeline for the project.
The party would also stage an agitation on May 7 at the Srikakulam Collector office to oppose the construction of the proposed cargo airport on the lands of farmers in Palasa division, he said.

CPI(M) calls for protest on August 5 against ‘true-up charges' burden

The CPI(M) State Committee has opposed the proposed additional ₹12,771 crore power tariff burden under the true-up charges, and demanded its immediate withdrawal. The party appealed to the people to participate in the Statewide protests under the banner of Praja Vedika on August 5. In a statement on Friday, CPI(M) State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao said that despite claims by the government that there would be no hike in power charges, the distribution companies had submitted proposals to the Electricity Regulatory Commission (ERC) seeking to impose the massive burden for the retail supply deficit from 2019–20 to 2023–24. He accused the government of being complicit, and demanded that should intervene and halt the process. He also pointed out that over the past 36 months, ₹3,000 crore had already been collected for the 2014–19 true-up period. Since the coalition government assumed power, it had imposed ₹15,485 crore in fuel surcharge adjustment charges for 2022–23 and 2023–24, and an additional ₹2,787 crore in 2024–25 alone at a rate of 40 paise per unit per month. The upcoming rollout of smart meters would further increase consumer burden, he warned. He criticised the coalition parties for breaking their electoral promise of reducing power tariffs and accused them of shifting the financial burden of mismanagement and corporate corruption onto common consumers.

At condolence meet, Achuthanandan's legacy as a key figure in Kerala's transformation remembered

V.S. Achuthanandan played one of the leading roles in the transformation of Kerala into a modern State, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said. He was speaking at a condolence meeting organised here on Friday by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) State committee for Achuthanandan, former Chief Minister and founding leader of the CPI(M), who passed away on July 21. 'VS's life is deeply intertwined with the historic Punnapra-Vayalar uprising which took an uncompromising stand to make united Kerala a reality. At a time when it was difficult to organise farm workers, he took a lead role in it. He endured brutal torture in jail, but this only strengthened his resolve to fight for the Communist movement. Some of the most eventful years in his public life were as the Leader of the Opposition, when he made many substantial interventions and reached the farthest corners of Kerala to expose wrongdoing. As the Chief Minister, he played a key role in developmental and welfare efforts,' said He said that Achuthanandan's passing away is an irreparable loss not just for the Communist movement, but also for movements for democracy across the country. Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan said that Achuthanandan had an open mind to accept and imbibe progressive ideas even at old age. He focussed on environmental issues even before they were in vogue. 'During his tenure as the Chief Minister, I had on many occasions levelled criticism against the government in the Assembly. But, when it came to issues that he was really concerned about, he used to agree with the Opposition, even if it was raised by us. The debates on the lottery mafia was which led to qualitative outcomes and led to the ban on lottery from other States. Though many of us have criticised his language in the past, we realised that it was a language that evolved from working amid the common people,' he said. Communist Party of India (CPI) State Secretary Binoy Viswam said that Achuthanandan imbibed the ideals of Marxism and implemented it in practice based on his own real world understanding. CPI(M) State Secretary M.V. Govindan presided over the function in which Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph, former Union Minister V. Muraleedharan, Archbishop of the Latin Archdiocese of Thiruvananthapuram Thomas J. Netto, Palayam Imam V. P. Suhaib Moulavi, Sree Narayana Dharma Sangam Trust general secretary Swami Subhangananda, Metropolitan of the Malankara Orthodox Church's Thiruvananthapuram diocese Gabriel Mar Gregorios and others spoke.

‘Lent legitimacy to divisive ideology': CM Vijayan takes aim at National Film Awards after ‘The Kerala Story' wins award for Best Director

After 'The Kerala Story' won the awards for best director and best cinematography at the 71st National Film Awards, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan criticised the ceremony for lending 'legitimacy to a narrative rooted in the divisive ideology.' Accusing the film of spreading misinformation, he said it aims at 'sowing seeds of communal hatred' and 'tarnishing' the image of his state. Filmmaker Sudipto Sen was awarded Best Director and Prasantanu Mohapatra for Best Cinematography for their role in 'The Kerala Story'. 'By honouring a film that spreads blatant misinformation with the clear intent of tarnishing Kerala's image and sowing seeds of communal hatred, the jury of the National Film Awards has lent legitimacy to a narrative rooted in the divisive ideology of the Sangh Parivar,' Vijayan said. 'Kerala, a land that has always stood as a beacon of harmony and resistance against communal forces, has been gravely insulted by this decision. It is not just Malayalis, but everyone who believes in democracy, must raise their voice in defence of truth and the constitutional values we hold dear,' he added. The film ended up grossing over Rs 300 crore globally.
