Kamal Haasan promises to be ‘voice of Tamil Nadu' in Delhi, advocates for centrism as he takes oath as Rajya Sabha MP

In his note, Kamal began, 'Today, as I rose to take the affirmation as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, I did so with a heart full of humility and a conscience weighed by responsibility. I have sworn to uphold the Constitution of India not as a ritual of formality, but as a solemn promise to serve its spirit with fidelity, courage, and conscience. This moment is not mine alone. I share it with my people, whose voices I carry into the chambers of power. I share it with the soil of Tamil Nadu that has nurtured me a land that has produced poets and revolutionaries, thinkers and reformers, and above all, citizens who believe deeply in justice, dignity, and self-respect. I also carry the invisible, enduring presence of my father a freedom fighter who taught me that liberty must be lived, not merely won. In my veins flows not just his blood, but his values forged in the crucible of our struggle for independence, tempered by the dreams of Gandhiji, the intellect of Ambedkar, and the conviction of Periyar.'
He addressed his perspective on leading with centrism, and added, 'It is in that spirit that I speak of centrism, not as a compromise but as a conviction. Centrism, the political ideology of Makkal Needhi Maiam, is the art of balance- of embracing both equity and efficiency, liberty and fraternity, tradition and progress. It is a philosophy not rooted in hesitation but in harmony.'
He added, 'India's freedom movement itself was a coalition of diverse dreams and ideologies. It was not a monochrome march, but a magnificent mosaic - Gandhiji's non-violence, Ambedkar's constitutionalism, Nehru's pluralism, Patel's pragmatism, and Periyar's rationalism - all found space under the same sky.'
He concluded, 'I will strive to be the voice of Tamil Nadu in Delhi- clear, compassionate and committed. I will speak not for one community, but for the common good. Not for narrow gain, but for national growth.'
Kamal had filed his nomination papers on June 6 at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat, accompanied by chief minister MK Stalin, deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, and senior leaders from alliance partners including VCK's Thol. Thirumavalavan, MDMK's Vaiko, and Tamil Nadu Congress chief Selvaperunthagai.
On the work front, he was last seen in Mani Ratnam's Thug Life.

Stalin woos youth, says DMK govt working for their uplift
Chennai: Chief minister M K Stalin made a strong pitch to woo youth towards DMK in the upcoming assembly elections. He announced govt would start giving laptops to college students, countering AIADMK's charges of DMK halting the free laptop scheme. "Youth are the foundation of Tamil society. Primary goal of the Dravidian model govt is to enable growth of youth. This govt is for the youth," Stalin said on Wednesday after distributing appointment orders to around 2,300 youth recruited through state municipal administration department. "Peaceful ambience, proper maintenance of law and order, skillful youth, requisite infrastructure and schemes rolled out with foresight are helping TN remain on top," he said. Efforts have begun for generation of more jobs in Dravidian model govt 2.0 too after 2026, he added. Political analyst A Ramasamy said such initiatives consolidate DMK's support base. "Schemes such as Naan Mudhalvan mainly attract students from economically disadvantaged groups. These programmes targeting youth are helping the party consolidate its base," he said. However, professor and economist Krishna Raj said the job figures required closer scrutiny. "Filling one lakh govt vacancies is good. But where are the remaining jobs that were created? If these are in the industrial or informal sector, they may lack social security, insurance or benefits," he said.

7 held for attack on Suvendu's convoy in Cooch Behar
1 2 Kolkata/Jalpaiguri: Seven people were arrested by Cooch Behar Police on Wednesday in connection with the attack on the convoy of Bengal leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari. Sources said the arrested included TMC workers and Trinamool Yuva functionaries. The arrested were remanded to five days' judicial custody. Meanwhile, Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya moved a notice in Rajya Sabha under Rule 267 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Council of State (Rajya Sabha), seeking a discussion on the attack, which he described as "an attack on democracy". Adhikari's convoy came under attack in Cooch Behar on Tuesday, when he arrived to attend a protest rally and submit a memorandum to the SP regarding alleged assaults on BJP workers. As the convoy reached Khagrabari, a group of alleged TMC supporters attacked the convoy. In his complaint, Adhikari named 41 persons, including state minister, Udayan Guha. "We are not going to leave them. If Udayan Guha was directly involved in the incident, the police's role cannot be ruled out," Adhikari said at a meeting on Wednesday. State has used up 60% of its groundwater, Rajya Sabha told
Bhopal: The state has extracted nearly 60% of its groundwater reserves, placing it among the country's most water-stressed states, Rajya Sabha was informed. The state's extraction rate is higher than those of neighbouring Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Gujarat. The state ranks 12th nationally in terms of groundwater extraction as a percentage of total available resources. Punjab recorded the highest stage of groundwater extraction, followed by Rajasthan. The data was shared on Aug 4 by the Union minister of state for Jal Shakti, Raj Bhushan Choudhary, in response to a written query from MPs Subhash Barala, Mayankkumar Nayak, Kesridevsinh Jhala and Narayana Koragappa. The Rajya Sabha members had sought details on the status of groundwater across states, pollution levels, and measures being taken to address the crisis. Choudhary replied that assessment of dynamic groundwater resources of each state/UT was being carried out on an annual basis jointly by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), and the concerned state nodal/ground water departments. The stage of groundwater extraction (SoE), which is defined as a ratio of annual groundwater extraction over annual extractable groundwater resources for the whole country, has arrived at 60.47%. Water being a state subject, sustainable development and management of groundwater resources are primarily the responsibility of the state govts. However, the central govt facilitates the efforts of the state govts by way of technical and financial assistance through its various schemes and projects. In this direction, the important steps taken by the ministry included the govt implemented "Jal Shakti Abhiyan" launched in 2019. As per the Abhiyan dashboard, in the past 4 years, more than 1.14 cr water harvesting and recharge works have been completed through coordination in the country. Further, the CGWB has also completed the National Aquifer Mapping project covering approximately 25 lakh square km of mappable area across the country. The central govt is implementing Atal Bhujal Yojana in 80 water stressed districts of 7 states which has community-led sustainable management of groundwater resources and demand management as its core theme. The CGWA has been constituted under the ministry for the purpose of regulation and control of groundwater development and management in the country. It generates ground water quality data of the entire country on a regional scale as part of its groundwater quality monitoring program and various scientific studies. It may be recalled that 'Dynamic Groundwater Resources of Madhya Pradesh 2024' report had revealed that groundwater extraction in parts of Madhya Pradesh, including its major cities, Bhopal and Indore has reached alarming levels. The industrial capital Indore was rated in "critical", while Bhopal was under "semi-critical" category and had extracted close to 80 per cent of groundwater. The state's Malwa region overall was rated in the critical category. The report stated out of the total 317 assessment units (hydrogeological units), 225 assessment units fall in the safe category, 61 assessment units fall under semi-critical, 5 in critical and 26 fall in the over exploited category.
