Theatre CBS takes three awards
Their play, Duckish, won awards for Best Production, Best Lighting, and Best Set.
Not surprisingly, the people behind the troupe are pretty pleased with the fast progress they've made in such a short time.
One of them is Susan Bonnell, vice president of Theatre CBS' board of directors. Bonnell
has been involved with theatre most of her life, but drifted away a bit once she got married and started a family. She returned to theatre in 2015.
'My husband actually said to me, 'You know, Susan, I don't think you're as happy as you could be, and you should try and get back into theatre,'' Bonnell recalled.
She did just that, first auditioning for a role in a production by Shakespeare by the Sea. 'It's been nonstop ever since,' she said.
In 2021, Bonnell received a call from Vicki Greenslade, who wanted to form a community theatre group in Conception Bay South. Bonnell met with Greenslade, Gord Billard, and Jacqueline Cook at Greenslade's home that summer, and Theatre CBS was born. The troupe put on a show that Christmas and have done a couple of shows a year since then. It should be noted that Theatre CBS is not limited to CBS residents. The group has members from Holyrood, St. John's, Mount Pearl, and Paradise.
A couple of years ago, Theatre CBS decided to apply for inclusion in the Newfoundland and Labrador Drama Society. They were accepted. Last year, they attended the provincial drama festival in an observer's role.
'The drama society wants you to observe for a year before you compete,' said Bonnell.
So, this year, when the provincial drama festival was held at the Corner Brook Arts and Culture Centre, Theatre CBS got to compete and perform Duckish.
The play is Bonnell's adaption of the fairy and ghost stories of Tom Dawe, an internationally recognized poet and author from CBS.
'One of our mandates for Theatre CBS is to celebrate the shore and all things Conception Bay South, so we knew we wanted to do something to honour Mr. Dawe, and this is what emerged,' said Bonnell.
Theatre CBS first performed Duckish at the Manuels River Centre in March 2024. The play was presented in the round, meaning the actors were in a circle in the middle of the audience.
'We were trying to create that sort of campfire vibe of telling ghost stories sitting around a campfire, or in a kitchen party, that kind of an experience for the audience,' said Bonnell.
They reached out to Veronica Nugent who at the time was a teacher at Queen Elizabeth Regional High. She got the school's art club to help create a set.
'The audience walked into a forest and they were on the inside of the set,' said Bonnell.
At the drama festival, the group had to perform on the Arts and Culture Centre's main stage.
'So, the first thing that I had to do was rewrite the show,' said Bonnell. 'We had to adapt it for the stage because performing in the round and performing on a proscenium arch stage is a really different experience.'
The group also had to thin out the cast. In the March 2024 performance, the Duckish cast consisted of over 20 people, including children. The theatre group could not afford to bring so many people to Corner Brook and so narrowed down the cast to nine. They also used puppets to represent the fairies and tell some of the ghost stories. For the March 2024 performance, they worked with professional puppeteer Baptiste Neis, who did a workshop with the cast and created a couple of puppets for the show. 'So we used that experience of working with her and we created a bunch more puppets,' said Bonnell. 'We had shadow puppets, and we had some creepy doll puppets that the audience loved in Corner Brook.'
Susan's husband, John Bonnell, created a new lighting plot for the show's Corner Brook performance, which won the festival's Best Lighting Award. The music also went through changes. Maureen Chafe was the play's music director in March 2024. 'We used her soundscape and then augmented it, enhanced it with some other original pieces,' said Bonnell.
Bonnell's niece, who is studying music in Michigan, wrote a piece for the play that was nominated for a sound award. Duckish was also nominated for Best Costumes, and Brad Jones, who played the character Tom, was nominated for Best Actor.
Bonnell said directing is different from acting. 'I've mostly been an actress over my life, and certainly in the last 10 years since coming back into theatre,' she said. 'But, as an actor, you certainly understand and know, appreciate, what it is that you like in a good director. So, I tried to embody all the things that I always look for in a good director.'
Bonnell said she enjoys bringing texts to life, taking something from an idea all the way to a finished project. 'I was certainly very, very proud of what we brought to Corner Brook,' she said. 'So being novices at the drama festival, it was a very rewarding experience for everybody involved.'

Who got evicted from ‘Big Brother' this week, 8/7?
'Big Brother' lived up to its 'Expect the Unexpected' motto this week. Jimmy Heagerty became the fourth houseguest evicted from 'Big Brother 27″ during the Thursday, August 7, episode of the CBS reality series. He was evicted by a vote of 9-2. Ashley Hollis voted to keep Jimmy as did Jimmy's closest ally, returning player Rachel Reilly. After casting her vote, Ashley ran back into the Diary Room to say she 'messed up,' attempting to change her vote to keep Kelley Jorgensen. However, per official 'Big Brother' rules, Ashley was unable to to change her mind. Earlier this week, Rylie Jeffries won the Head of Household competition. However, Mickey Lee activated a secret power to dethrone him. Rylie had an opportunity to guess who was behind the coup, but since he incorrectly guessed Ashley, Mickey successfully overthrew him and became the new HoH. Although things got pretty heated between Mickey and Rylie after the dethroning, Mickey's target was Keanu Soto. She nominated him for eviction alongside Kelley and Riley, telling Riley that she wanted his help evicting Keanu. To everyone in the house's chagrin, Keanu won the Power of Veto yet again and took himself off the block. Unsure of who to name as a replacement nominee, Mickey heavily considered Vince Panaro. That is until Vince revealed that Mickey's ally Jimmy had been talking game with the house pariah Keanu. Mickey made a last minute decision to put Jimmy on the block alongside Kelley and Riley. Who won BB Blockbuster this week? Rylie won the BB Blockbuster, leaving Kelley and Jimmy on the block. The victory marked Rylie's first BB Blockbuster win. When is 'Big Brother' on next? The Head of Household competition and nominations ceremony will play out during the next episode of 'Big Brother,' which airs on Sunday, August 10, at 8 p.m. ET. Reality TV alum slams costars for ‘making fun' of him: ‘Just felt nasty'
'Big Brother 27' alum Jimmy Heagerty has thick skin, but he's still hurt by how his former allies Mickey Lee and Morgan Pope talked about him behind his back. 'Listen, all's fair in love and game. I expect the gameplay. … [But] knowing for weeks that they had been making fun of my mannerisms … it just felt nasty,' Jimmy told after he was eliminated from the CBS reality series. 'Respectfully, they're two 30-year-old women, and you'd think they'd be a little more mature than that. I was pretty shocked, as a 25-year-old, to be watching that back and to feel like I had a little bit more maturity than they did.' One live feeds clip of Mickey and Morgan imitating Jimmy's use of slang has made the rounds on social media. Some viewers claimed that the conversation came off as homophobic. 'Oh, my God, the tea is scalding hot. And why is it hot, Mickey?' Morgan asks in the clip. 'Because [our alliance with Jimmy], Triple Threat, has been exed. … Gay-asp,' Mickey replies. Jimmy feels that Mickey and Morgan's final two alliance name, The Tea Party, could also be interpreted as a dig at him. 'Their final two [alliance name] was almost a play on what I say in the house all the time. I don't know, I thought it was interesting,' Jimmy told 'I'm not making any snap judgments or anything like that. Unlike them, I'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt and would prefer to talk to them about their intention and things like that. But the perception definitely wasn't good.' Jimmy was evicted by a vote of 9-2 on Thursday, August 7, after Mickey named him as a replacement nominee during her Head of Household reign. Mickey and Morgan stopped trusting Jimmy after learning that he'd been trying to make a deal with their rival Keanu Soto. While Mickey and Morgan felt that Jimmy's conversations with Keanu were a betrayal, Jimmy doesn't see it that way. 'With Mickey and Morgan, I had put my trust in them 100 percent. Everything I did was always thinking about Triple Threat above all else. Turns out, that was a mistake,' he said. 'I was making an effort to build a bridge with Keanu, because I knew he was looking at Mickey and Morgan as targets. And the last thing we wanted was to end up on the block together.' Jimmy said he wanted to lay the groundwork to protect himself and at least one of his Triple Threat allies in the event that Keanu became HoH. 'So [then] hopefully he'd only put up somebody like Morgan, and that would allow Mickey and I not just to whip votes, but to fight for Morgan potentially in [the] Veto [competition],' Jimmy explained. 'Mickey and Morgan never gave me a chance to defend myself. … My intention cannot be defined by their perception. … I was neutralizing [Keanu] as a threat to Triple Threat, not throwing them under the bus for the sake of my own game.' READ MORE: 'Big Brother' star makes history with chaotic attempt to change vote live on air Jimmy's elimination continued a pattern of season 27 Heads of Household nominating their own allies for eviction. Vince Panaro put Kelley Jorgensen on the block week one despite having a final two deal with her, and Lauren Domingue sent home Adrian Rocha even though they were loosely aligned and he wasn't coming after her. Jimmy told that he 'absolutely' thinks the BB Blockbuster twist — which forces HoHs to nominate three people for eviction instead of two — is contributing to the bewildering trend. 'I think people are trying to lean on playing safe rather than making game moves, because they're too worried about damage control,' he said. 'This game can mess with a lot of people's heads. You can allow people to distract you from what you know to be true.' Jimmy noted that he respects current Head of Household Ava Pearl for nominating Vince Panaro and Zach Cornell even though it's made waves in the house. 'I think a lot of HoHs this season haven't stood on business. And I think Ava's standing on business,' he said.
