Two Oklahoma Sooners nominated to AFCA Good Works Team
According to the AFCA, "The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team was established in 1992 by the College Football Association, recognizing the extra efforts made by college football players and student support staff off the field. AFCA became the governing body of the award in 1997 and continues to honor college football players who go the extra mile for those in need. Allstate worked to present the award starting with the 2008 season."
The SEC leads the way among all conferences with 89 selections since 1992.
Venables was hired as OU's head coach in December of 2021 and has displayed a strong commitment to developing his players in Norman on and off the field. He's had a major focus on players excelling in the classroom and preparing them for life after college and after football. Venables also established the S.O.U.L. Mission program when he came to Oklahoma, and it is currently led by Caleb Kelly, Vince Carter, and Lorenda Holston.
Spears-Jennings has made an impact on and off the field during his time as a Sooner. He is stepping into a leadership role on OU's defense with the departure of Billy Bowman to the NFL. Spears-Jennings was one of three players selected to represent the program at SEC Media Days last month, and he's looking to build on a solid season in 2024.

Kalen DeBoer updates status of two injured Alabama starting linemen
According to head coach Kalen DeBoer, a pair of starting Alabama Crimson Tide linemen have missed the program's second consecutive scrimmage of fall camp. Those players are offensive guard Jaeden Roberts and defensive tackle James Smith, both of which are dealing with injuries leading up to Alabama's season opener at Florida State on Saturday, Aug. 30, according to DeBoer. DeBoer also recently gave an update on the status of both following the Crimson Tide's scrimmage Saturday, saying of the duo: "Two guys that didn't scrimmage today, Jaeden and James, same as last week," DeBoer said. "James has been working through and building up. Feel good about the progress he's had in the week of practice and with it being live. Needed to hold back there, but he's getting closer by the day." "Jaeden has a concussion, just to tell you what it is, and he's going through the protocol of that and hasn't done anything from a team standpoint. Starting to work back into that protocol, which included being out there today, but not to participate in the scrimmage." A storyline to monitor leading up to Week 1, if Roberts is unavailable for the season opener, then Geno VanDeMark would likely step into the starting role at right guard. If Smith is unavailable, then names such as Jeremiah Beaman and Edric Hill could see increased snaps at defensive tackle. Alabama will open the 2025 season Saturday, Aug. 30 on the road at Florida State. Nebraska football in the mix for four-star defensive lineman Jamar Thompson
Nebraska football is making a firm push for class of 2027 four-star defensive lineman Jamar Thompson. This was reported by Rivals' Marcus Benjamin on Friday. Thompson is the No. 101 overall player in the 2027 class, the seventh overall defensive lineman in the class, and the ninth overall player from the state of Florida in his class, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings. Alabama, Georgia, Miami, Notre Dame, and Syracuse are the schools that are standing out most in his recruitment. The Huskers have been in communication with Thompson quite a bit lately. Defensive line coach Terry Bradden has been the primary point of contact for the Huskers. Thompson had 66 tackles and four sacks in 15 games last season, per statistics from The Huskers could benefit from more talented defensive linemen, and Thompson certainly brings a strong skill set. Playing under Bradden could only help him further enhance his game. The program will have to work cut out for them in this recruitment. Big Ten reportedly 'floating' idea for massive College Football Playoff expansion
Double trouble? The Big Ten is reportedly looking to expand the College Football Playoff by at least double the teams. According to ESPN college football insider Pete Thamel, the Big Ten is "floating" the idea for a 24- or 28-team College Football Playoff. That would be at a minimum a doubling increase of the current number of teams in the College Football Playoff -- which is 12. According to the report from Thamel, the new proposed model would have these notable details: The FCS level currently plays with a 24 team playoff system, with the top eight teams receiving a first round bye. The potential FBS model mentioned in Thamel's report sounds similar if they were to move forward with the 24-team format. This idea has received plenty of push back and mockery on social media on Saturday, with some pointing to this model ruining the regular season of college football. But I'd argue this could potentially open door for more entertaining late game seasons. In my opinion, it would also reduce the number of opt outs as teams that normally landed in the Citrus Bowl or ReliaQuest Bowl would now be playing in the College Football Playoff. That would be a positive for the game. It'll be interesting to see if this idea gets any legs to it or if it dies after this "floating" by the Big Ten.
