Clyde confirms no return for Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

The Thistle mascot officially declared himself as taking a backseat, but he will be taking on a new role for Glasgow 2026.
The slimmer down games will return to Glasgow next year and Clyde will remain on hand to help the new mascot.
Clyde's statement was read by a Glasgow 2026 spokesperson, who said: 'Back in 2014, I was honoured to play a part in one of the greatest sporting summers Glasgow and Scotland have ever seen.
'To know that after all these years, I still hold such a place in the heart of this city and in the heart of Scotland, is a far greater honour than a simple thistle could ever ask for.

'So for this very reason – and with a heart full of excitement for what's about to come – that I officially rule myself out of the running to be the mascot for Glasgow 2026.'
The new mascot is to be revealed on July 23 to mark one year until the game begins and will remain a secret until then.
It has been created by the Glasgow 2026 Mascot Makers which is a team of 76 schoolchildren from 24 Glasgow schools.
They have worked in collaboration with the Glasgow 2026 Organising Company, Glasgow City Council, Impact Arts and creative agency 999 to create a character said to be 'full of Glasgow's signature warmth, wit and charm'.
Phil Batty OBE, Chief Executive of Glasgow 2026, said: 'Clyde is loved by everybody in the Commonwealth Games community, from the team, fans and athletes to the wider public for his friendly face, his energy and his pride in Scotland. He's given many years of tireless service and will be a tough act to follow, but we know our brilliant new mascot will add magic and sparkle to the Games and win a new generation of hearts across Glasgow, Scotland and around the world.
'Imagined by the young people of Glasgow to shine on the world stage, this new character captures everything Glasgow 2026 is about – fun, inclusion, pride and progress. We can't wait to unveil them to the world later this month.
'We're excited that Clyde will have a role to play at Glasgow 2026, and can't wait to share what it is!'
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place from 23 July to 2 August 2026 and will feature more than 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories, competing in an exhilarating 10 sport programme, across four of the city's iconic venues.

How Man Utd plan to fund £2billion new stadium with ‘sinister' tactic from the US

MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly planning to fund their new £2billion stadium with a 'sinister' tactic from the US. The Red Devils announced plans for a mega 100,000-seater arena in March after deciding to replace Old Trafford. 3 Man Utd are planning to fund their new £2billion stadium with a 'sinister' US tactic Credit: Getty 3 The Red Devils announced plans for a 100,00-seater arena in March Credit: Reuters The new stadium will be the biggest in the country. And a local regeneration project is expected to create thousands of jobs and new homes. United believe once the £2bn stadium and surrounding areas are complete, it will generate £7bn annually into the economy. United's plans are expected to cost upwards of £4.2bn in total. In order to build their stadium, United must move a rail freight hub which currently sits on land needed for the project. And it's claimed they want the UK government to pay the estimated costs, which could reach £300million – but has previously been estimated at as much as £1bn. In the past, West Ham's London Stadium and Manchester City's Etihad Stadium were built with public money. This follows a 'sinister' trend across the pond in the US, where public funds are often handed to sport teams for new stadiums. In 2016, the Las Vegas Raiders were handed £555m when they were still a California-based franchise. Three years ago, the Buffalo Bills received £629m of public funding, while the Washington Commanders are currently in the process of landing £740m - which works out at $1bn. The money is handed out with the promise of returning major numbers to the economy. But Pat Garofalo, of the American Economic Liberties Project, told The Guardian: 'That's the story they tell to get the public money, but it's the big lie. 'We (in the US) export a lot of problematic things, and I really hope that we don't export that big lie.' The Guardian adds that Manchester United declined to comment.

Angry Clyde boss blasts side after throwing away lead against Spartans

Darren Young says his side should have been out of sight by half-time as they lost 3-1 at home Darren Young blasted his Clyde side as 'nowhere near good enough' after throwing away a lead to lose 3-1 at home to the Spartans on Saturday. ‌ Taylor Sutherland opened the scoring in 12 minutes from a neat passing move, but Clyde went in at the interval 2-1 down, with strikes from Mark Stowe and Bradley Whyte, with Stowe adding his second, nine minutes into the second half. ‌ That left Clyde looking for their first League Two win of the season as they head to Stranraer on Saturday, sitting eighth, with just a point. ‌ Young said: 'The game could have been over for us by half-time, anyone there watching it sees that, but the second-half performance is nowhere near good enough. 'The game should have been out of sight by half-time, and it's easy to say that, but it wasn't. 'We've had three or four chances, clear-cut chances, that you need to even make the keeper make the save. 'We're chasing the game because we're not taking our own chances, we're not being ruthless enough in either box, and it's just nowhere near good enough. 'It's schoolboy errors, and that needs to be better, all over. It's another three points chucked away.' ‌ Young added: 'We go 1-0 up, we're very comfortable, but we go in 2-1 down at half-time, and how that happened we'll never know. 'We had a chance, one on one with the goalie to go 2-0 up, and 20 seconds later they've gone up the other end of the park and scored. 'The third goal comes from us being on the ball – we seem to be our own worst enemy right now. ‌ 'It's nowhere near good enough, and we need to look at that as a team and coaching staff, collectively and individually.' Young says he may make changes for the visit to Stair Park on Saturday, but players had an opportunity to force their way into his team last weekend. He said: 'You want to get that win under your belt as soon as possible. 'We don't go into next week feeling sorry for ourselves, we go in with the same mentality and attitude, but if we create that number of chances we're expecting them to take them. 'We may need to shuffle the pack, and places are up for grabs.'

Ross County's Arron Lyall spells out risks of complacency as Staggies set their sights on Premiership return

Arron Lyall insists any hint of Ross County slackness will be punished as the Staggies set out to seal the club's immediate return to the Premiership. The attacking midfielder is one of 11 new arrivals at the Dingwall club and he's relishing this fresh challenge. The 21-year-old, who had a four-month loan stint at Inverness in 2021 when he was coming through the ranks at Rangers, is delighted to have made the Highlands his base for at least two years. On Saturday afternoon, County will host Championship rivals Partick Thistle in the Premier Sports Cup, needing three points to get through as Group B winners and into the second round. They trail Thistle by two points, therefore only a victory will be enough to knock their opponents off top spot. A stunning 8-0 demolition of League Two Edinburgh City on Tuesday kept County in contention. Once the dust settles on this final tie, the attention will switch to their pursuit of the title. Lyall stressed there's no room for complacency – despite the high expectations nationally. He said: 'When you come down from the top-flight, a lot of teams are expected to go straight back up. 'However, the Championship is a very hard league. I played a lot of games in it over the past two seasons, it is tough. 'We'd like to think we're going to win the league, but we must not expect to win it. We must be focused for every single game. 'If we play to the best of our ability, then we've a really good chance, but any slackness and you will be punished. There are a lot of good teams and good players in the Championship. 'If you're not at the top of your game every game, then you can be punished.' Lyall had a ball in his year at Morton, impressing Ton boss Dougie Imrie having been on loan at Airdrieonians from Rangers from January to May 2024. He made 42 appearances for the Cappielow side and walked off with the club's young player of the year prize. That form was noticed by County manager Don Cowie, who secured his services on a two-year contract on June 21. Lyall was impressed by Cowie's early bid to sign him as he spelled out the target of getting back to the top-flight in one shot. He explained: 'I loved my time at Morton. It was great. 'I have such respect for Dougie Imrie, who was brilliant with me last year. 'The gaffer here phoned me quite early in the summer and made it clear a few times what his plans were for this season. 'He didn't mess around and told me what he wanted, and this move was a no-brainer for me.' Ronan Hale's first competitive hat-trick for County, a Jay Henderson double, a strike from Kieran Phillips and a brace from 16-year-old substitute Joe Coyle buried visitors Edinburgh City in midweek. County now know a victory against Thistle on Saturday will put them into the second round of the Premier Sports Cup. That rout came on the back of a 1-0 win at Queen of the South and Lyall explained they've been improving game by game since slipping up away to League Two Stranraer in their first tie in their section. He said: 'It was good to put on such a good performance on Tuesday, especially in our first home game. 'The Stranraer game especially wasn't great when we drew the game after being 1-0 up and then we lost on penalties. 'We expect better from ourselves, even if it is to grind out a 1-0 win. In the Championship, we might need to do that a few times. 'But Tuesday was more of a show from us. To score eight goals was brilliant. 'I was buzzing for young Joe Coyle to get two and for Ronan Hale to get his first hat-trick in Scotland.'
