New tartan unveiled for Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026

The official tartan, designed by award-winning Scottish fashion designer Siobhan Mackenzie, was launched by the Glasgow 2026 Organising Company and has been registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans. Siobhan has made a name for herself reinventing classic tartans into contemporary fashion, with her designs having previously been worn by huge stars such as Justin Bieber and Alan Cumming. She said: "I feel honoured to be designing a tartan for such a momentous occasion in my home country. "When I graduated as a fashion design student in 2014, I took on a role as a tailoring technician for the technical officials of The Games. "At that point, designing the official tartan for the Games seemed like a pipedream, so this is truly a full circle moment. "I love weaving stories into tartan design, and while many people might be expecting a blue or green base, I looked at Glasgow's rich history and felt inspired by the shipbuilding stories. "This led to a steel grey base with the Glasgow 2026 colours woven through in my signature style. "It's incredibly important to me that every thread of this project is made in Scotland, and I'll be working with local textiles and manufacturers to bring this design to life. "I can't wait to see it across next year's Games.' A thread count of 74 represents the nations and territories taking part in the Games, while the dark blue section has been increased to 26 in homage to the Games which will take place in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2. "Siobhan is an expert in her field and has collaborated closely with us throughout the production process. "This special tartan draws inspiration from Glasgow's Clyde-built history, and she has carefully selected the threads of wool to celebrate the Games with this one-off tartan. "As Glasgow 2026 fast approaches with our one-year-to-go milestone next week, this tartan is a sign of what's to come next summer and will be part of the fabric of Glasgow 2026 across the city."

Clyde confirms no return for Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

The Thistle mascot officially declared himself as taking a backseat, but he will be taking on a new role for Glasgow 2026. The slimmer down games will return to Glasgow next year and Clyde will remain on hand to help the new mascot. Clyde's statement was read by a Glasgow 2026 spokesperson, who said: 'Back in 2014, I was honoured to play a part in one of the greatest sporting summers Glasgow and Scotland have ever seen. 'To know that after all these years, I still hold such a place in the heart of this city and in the heart of Scotland, is a far greater honour than a simple thistle could ever ask for. The new mascot is to be revealed on July 23 to mark one year until the game begins and will remain a secret until then. It has been created by the Glasgow 2026 Mascot Makers which is a team of 76 schoolchildren from 24 Glasgow schools. They have worked in collaboration with the Glasgow 2026 Organising Company, Glasgow City Council, Impact Arts and creative agency 999 to create a character said to be 'full of Glasgow's signature warmth, wit and charm'. Phil Batty OBE, Chief Executive of Glasgow 2026, said: 'Clyde is loved by everybody in the Commonwealth Games community, from the team, fans and athletes to the wider public for his friendly face, his energy and his pride in Scotland. He's given many years of tireless service and will be a tough act to follow, but we know our brilliant new mascot will add magic and sparkle to the Games and win a new generation of hearts across Glasgow, Scotland and around the world. 'Imagined by the young people of Glasgow to shine on the world stage, this new character captures everything Glasgow 2026 is about – fun, inclusion, pride and progress. We can't wait to unveil them to the world later this month. 'We're excited that Clyde will have a role to play at Glasgow 2026, and can't wait to share what it is!' Scotstoun Stadium to undergo work for Commonwealth Games

Scotstoun Stadium is set for some 'major upgrades' before the event kicks off in the city next July. The first phase of the project began on Monday, June 16 and is starting with the installation of a new world-class athletics track. It will run until September 5. (Image: Glasgow 2026) The West and East temporary stands will be removed during this time to allow access to the track. They will later be reinstated for the start of the Glasgow Warriors competitive season in September 2025. Scotstoun Stadium was picked as the venue to host Athletics based on its existing infrastructure and the minimal venue readiness work and overlay required to deliver a 'world-class' competition.
