Dabba Cartel actor Anjali Anand says filmmakers are ‘not ready to cast her as lead yet' in movies

Hindustan Times03-05-2025
Anjali Anand has had an amazing last seven months with two back-to-back successes in Raat Jawan Hai and more recently Dabba Cartel. The actor admits that with her body type, it has been a struggle getting good roles but she is glad that it is finally happening. 'Everybody has a different struggle and obviously with my body, it's a little bit harder for people like me. I don't feel that I am any different but the society has created that perception. I believe I am very special and I don't feel like a bechari as it's about how you think of yourself,' she says.
Anjali Anand insists that the West has learnt to look beyond the body size of an actor, but in India, it is still an issue. 'Adam Sandler is the biggest example. They call him egg-shaped, but he is wearing t-shirts and shorts and doing everything. Har type ke log hote hain, and wahaan accept kar liya hai ye. They don't have a problem there, but here they do,' she says.
Recalling her early struggles, Anjali shares, 'When I came into this industry, people put this cloud in front of me that I am overweight. I came here to act and people forgot that. And I had to prove myself again and again to remind them. After I did (TV show) Dhai kilo Prem, people said that this is the only lead character I'm going to ever get, unless I lose weight. I was told to go underground for six months and come out thin. But in three months, I came back as a leading lady on the same channel.'
She adds, 'I know in movies, makers are not ready to cast me as lead yet. I'm accepting that reality. Abhi tak makers are not ready to see me on a poster or dancing on songs. They're not ready yet, but they will be, I will make them ready. We need more people like Shibani Dandekar (producer, Dabba Cartel) and Sumeet Vyas (director, Raat Jawan Hai) who will get out of the comfort zone, and cast someone just on the basis of that what they can do with the character, not on any other basis.'
After Dabba Cartel, Anjali came into the limelight with her story about facing molestation growing up connecting to a lot of people. But for the actor, this attention got a bit 'overwhelming'. 'I didn't expect for it to go so big and for people to reach out. I didn't know someone was interested in knowing it. I have been giving interviews for eight years, but no one cared. Now, suddenly they do,' she admits, adding, 'It takes a lot of guts to be vulnerable. But I think I'm all for it. I'm all for feeling my emotions as much as I can. They help me as an actor as well as a human being.'

Amitabh Bachchan says he was ridiculed for celebrating his son Abhishek Bachchan's achievements: ‘They dismissed my words as paternal flamboyance'

Amitabh Bachchan is beaming with pride after his son Abhishek Bachchan bagged the Best Actor award for I Want To Talk at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IIFM) 2025. The megastar took to his blog to share a heartfelt note along with pictures of Abhishek, calling himself 'the happiest father in the entire universe'. He wrote, 'Abhishek, you are the pride and honour of the family. You fly the flag that Dadaji established and have carried it with valour and hard work. Consistency, never giving in, and an attitude of: no matter how much you bring me down, I will rise again with my effort — and stand even taller. It took time, but you never gave up. You showed the world your strength. At Melbourne, they declared you the Best Actor. There can be no greater gift for a father.' 'Those who recognised your talent may have been several oceans away, but in time, our own shores shall embrace you with the same surging waves. Years ago, I celebrated a masterpiece performance of yours. Many ridiculed me then, dismissing my words as paternal flamboyance. But that sly laughter has now been silenced by respect and applause.' He concluded his note with a powerful message: 'Winning is the ultimate answer to many binding ropes and chains. The price of victory is high, but so are the rewards. You, Abhishek, have proved that. Stay quiet and flow at your own wish. With all my love — a very proud father and family.' Apart from Abhishek Bachchan, the festival honoured Geetha Kailasam with the Best Actress award, Jaideep Ahlawat with the Best Actor (Series) award for Paatal Lok 2, and Nimisha Sajayan with the Best Actress (Series) award for Dabba Cartel. Neeraj Ghaywan's Homebound won both Best Film and Best Director, while Aamir Khan was presented with the Excellence in Cinema award. Actor Arvind Swamy, meanwhile, received the Leadership in Cinema honour.

Jyotika's hardcore workout routine at 46 puts strength training and endurance front and centre: Watch

Jyotika Saravanan, at the age of 46, sweated it out at the gym with intense, high-impact workouts. A clip showing her in action at the gym, capturing a wide variety of exercises, surfaced on social media. All the exercises captured in the video were hardcore, requiring not just strength but also stamina to keep up. Jyothika's workout included all types, from HIIT to strength endurance.(PC: IG/@tamil_cinema_update_007) What all exercises was she doing? Jyotika spared no effort, proving that age is not a barrier to pushing forward and challenging oneself. Her workout was well-rounded, and the actor gave it her all as she endured a variety of training styles. It included cardio, HIIT, strength training, core work, and strength endurance- basically a full-body workout routine. Some of the workouts included the use of various gym equipment, from dumbbells and ropes to an intense sledge push. In fact, even otherwise regular exercises, whether sit-ups, lunges, or planks, were done with added weights, showcasing that her routines leaned heavily towards strength training, even when targeting the core with exercises like planks. In other words, she cranked up the difficulty of each move by incorporating elements of strength or endurance. For example, instead of the standard stair-climbing machine (stairmaster), she hopped up actual stairs, turning a simple movement into a high-impact, power-driven drill, proving that her fitness game is absolutely fierce. On her work front Jyotika was last seen in the Netflix series Dabba Cartel in February this year. As an actor-producer, her most recent production was the Tamil movie Retro in May. Last year, she starred alongside Ajay Devgn and R. Madhavan in Shaitaan. ALSO READ: Jyotika talks about her return to Hindi after 25 years; playing diverse roles: 'There's absolute growth'
