Lions' David Montgomery Reveals Major Key for Detroit's Offense

Over the last couple of years, the Detroit Lions have become not only one of the NFL's best teams, but also one of the league's most popular teams. They have turned into something of a sentimental favorite across Middle America, and their quick and unexpected rise may have something to do with their popularity.
For some three decades, the Lions were a moribund franchise despite possessing great players such as legendary running back Barry Sanders, star quarterback Matthew Stafford and Hall of Fame wide receiver Calvin Johnson.
But coach Dan Campbell led a resurgence while building a winning culture, and as a result, Detroit has won a total of 27 games and back-to-back NFC North titles over the last two years.
One of the biggest keys to the team's success has been its tag-team running back duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. Last year, the two combined to score 32 total touchdowns, with Montgomery contributing 12 of them.

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA - NOVEMBER 24: Jahmyr Gibbs #26 and David Montgomery #5 of the Detroit Lions celebrate a touchdown against the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium on November 24, 2024 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Lions RB David Montgomery is listed as active, along with Amon-Ra St. Brown. MoreHe said that the Lions' offensive line has enabled him to be the player he has become.
"For me, it makes my job so much easier," Montgomery told Athlon Sports. "I got some great guys up front. They are amazing."

Experts seem to be a bit divided on exactly how good Detroit's offensive line is. ESPN ranked it 16th among the NFL's 32 teams, but Sharp Football Analysis rated it third, with only the Denver Broncos and the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles ahead of Detroit.
Three Lions offensive linemen made the Pro Bowl in 2024: center Frank Ragnow, left tackle Taylor Decker and right tackle Penei Sewell. While Ragnow announced his retirement this offseason, that offensive line should still be able to create plenty of holes for Gibbs and Montgomery.
One factor in that position group's success in 2024 was the fact that it committed very few holding and false start penalties.
"Being able to have those guys care about you as much as they do and put everything on the line for you, it makes me realize these guys care about you and the only option is to give them all you got," Montgomery continued about his offensive line.
The Lions' defense has been a work in progress, but they improved to seventh in points allowed while giving up the second-fewest touchdown passes last year. They have two promising young safeties in Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph, and the return of defensive lineman Aidan Hutchinson should greatly help.

Granted, the departures of former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and former defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, both of whom helped Campbell build the Lions' winning culture, will likely hurt. There are also those who don't fully trust quarterback Jared Goff in big games, especially after he threw three interceptions in the team's divisional round loss to the Washington Commanders in January.
But if the Eagles won't repeat as world champions, the Lions may have the best chance of snatching the Vince Lombardi Trophy from them.

Adam Schefter Drops Major Hint on Shedeur Sanders' Browns Future

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. In what was arguably the worst-kept news in the NFL, the Cleveland Browns named former Super Bowl champion Joe Flacco as their starting quarterback on Monday. The news was expected ever since the 40-year-old passer signed a one-year, $4 million deal back in April to step into the void left by Deshaun Watson, who suffered his second Achilles injury and is expected to miss the 2025 season after playing just seven games last season before suffering a season-ending Achilles tear in Week 7. Given the team's unfortunate luck with injuries, especially under center, Cleveland loaded up on QBs to compete with Flacco, trading for former Pittsburgh Steelers first-round pick Kenny Pickett and drafting former Oregon star Dillon Gabriel in the third round of the 2025 NFL draft, and ex-Colorado star Shedeur Sanders two rounds after Gabriel. More NFL: Johnny Manziel Sends Clear Message to Shedeur Sanders Amid Browns QB Battle Both rookies each got a start during the preseason, and while both had their moments, neither showed they were ready to unseat Flacco atop the depth chart. Though Cleveland's QB1 is official, the second- and third-string positions have yet to be determined. And while most believed the Browns would take three QBs into the season and either cut or trade on of their rookies, ESPN's Adam Schefter believes that's not the case. Shedeur Sanders #12 of the Cleveland Browns is greeted by a member of the Philadelphia Eagles after the NFL Preseason 2025 game between Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on August 16, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Cleveland Browns defeated the Philadelphia Eagles NFL: Chiefs Lose First-Round Pick to Season-Ending Injury "Even though they named their starter today, and we don't know their backup, I expect the Cleveland Browns to carry four quarterbacks," Schefter said on "NFL Live" on Monday. "Four quarterbacks on their final 53-man roster. "I expect they'll have four there, they're going to keep both rookies, they're going to keep Flacco, so we're really talking about Kenny Pickett, and I really expect he makes the roster because quarterbacks are currency. ... Or maybe somebody calls about one of the rookie quarterbacks." There's an increasing feeling that the Browns will carry four quarterbacks on their 53-man roster. — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) August 18, 2025 More NFL: 49ers Could Face NFL Punishment Over Brandon Aiyuk Decision Schefter's prediction is good news for Sanders, who many believed was ranked fourth out of four by the Browns for the entirety of camp and the preseason. The 23-year-old threw for 138 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions in the Browns' preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers, and many agreed that he outshined Gabriel, who threw for 143 yards and an interception in last week's game against the Philadelphia Eagles. There's no question Sanders has been immensely popular among Browns fans since he was picked 144th overall back in April. Sanders leads all rookies in jersey sales since the draft, and his preseason debut was the most-watched preseason game on NFL Network in over a decade (2.2 million viewers), according to Yahoo Sports. Dolphins' De'Von Achane likely will miss practice this week because of calf injury

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Dolphins running back De'Von Achane likely will miss this week of practice as he nurses a calf injury, coach Mike McDaniel said Monday. Achane was sidelined for Miami's preseason game against the Lions on Saturday and was held out of the second day of joint practices at Detroit. McDaniel said the team is mostly being preventative by holding Achane out. 'Calves are the ones that you have to be super proactive, especially with explosive players," McDaniel said. "We don't want to have a long, strenuous, nagging issue. So we probably won't see De'Von this week after further assessment through the (past) weekend. But that's more preventative in nature just because — all trainers across the league have horror stories with calves if you're too aggressive coming back.' Achane has rushed for 1,707 yards and 14 touchdowns in two seasons for the Dolphins and is expected to be one of Miami's top offensive weapons this season. The Dolphins will host the Jacksonville Jaguars for one joint practice on Thursday before their preseason finale Saturday night. Defensive tackle Zach Sieler, who has been dealing with an undisclosed injury, will return to practice this week. And tight end Darren Waller could practice for the first time. Waller came out of retirement in July to sign a one-year deal with the Dolphins but has been working out separately from the team as he gets back into football shape. 'This is where we thought a realistic assessment would be made," McDaniel said, "and we're kind of making that daily. I'm expecting to see him sooner than later. I (thought) in the back of my mind that it would be this week, but I'm not going to just put him out there this week just because I said it before. I'm hopeful, but it's very soon.' Veteran visits The Dolphins hosted four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Matthew Judon on a free agent visit Monday. Jaelan Phillips and Chop Robinson sustained injuries over the past week, but McDaniel said bringing in Judon was not related to any potential long-term injuries to the team's linebackers. 'Visiting for visiting purposes," he said. 'We'll see what it leads to.' Judon had 41 tackles, 5 1/2 sacks and an interception returned for a touchdown in 15 starts for the Atlanta Falcons last year. ___ AP NFL:
