Prayers Pouring In For Women's Tennis Star Jessica Pegula
Tennis fans are keeping Jessica Pegula in their thoughts after Tuesday's loss at Wimbledon.
Pegula, the No. 3 women's player in the world, was dismantled by Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-2, 6-3 in the opening round at Wimbledon. It was a disappointing result considering she was coming off a title run at Bad Homburg.

"She played absolutely incredible tennis," Pegula said. "Do I think I played the best match ever? No. But I definitely don't think I was playing bad. It wasn't like I was playing that bad. She just was hitting her shots and going for it, serving big, serving high percentage, going big second serves, redirecting the ball. It was just her day, I honestly think."
This is the third Grand Slam tournament in a row that Pegula failed to reach the quarterfinals. After she lost in the fourth round at the French Open, she received a handful of death threats from angry gamblers on social media.
"These betters are insane and delusional and I don't allow dms and try to remember when to shut my comments off during tournament weeks but they always find a way to my timeline," Pegula wrote. "This stuff has never really bothered me much but does any other sport deal with this to our level? I'd love to know because it seems to be predominately tennis?? It's so disturbing."
Pegula added, "Every person on tour deals with it. It's so bad. Those are just really small snippets. I get told my family should get cancer and die from people on here on a regular basis. Absolutely crazy."

Even though Pegula has limited comments on Instagram, fans are worried she'll receive more nasty messages in the coming days.

"I feel for Pegula! She comes from playing one of her best tennis to find a very determined player that fought every point," one fan said.
"She's been upset very early, a few times in the last few tournaments. It seems to happen when Jessica Pegula can't seem to focus, because of family issues. I hope and pray everyone is ok in the Pegula family," another person wrote.
"I feel so bad for these athletes like Pegula having to take this sort of abuse on social media," a third person commented.
We're certainly hoping people leave Pegula alone. There's no place in sports for disgraceful behavior.
Pegula will regroup and try to make a run at the US Open later this summer. She made it to the final last year before losing to Aryna Sabalenka.

Having missed six months between November and May with a back injury, that's a really big win for Krejčíková/ Not least as it means she avoids becoming only the third Wimbledon women's defending champion to go out in the first round in tennis's 57-year Open Era. She'll play America's Caroline Dolehide or Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands next. Zheng Qinwen has become the latest top seed to fall in a frenetic opening two days at Wimbledon, as world No. 81 Kateřina Siniaková provided another upset in a wide-open women's singles draw. The Olympic champion was the first to lose her serve, with Siniakova — unseeded in the WTA singles ladder but No. 1 in doubles — showing big-hitting power to overwhelm her opponent. With Zheng 5-3 up and seemingly in control, a free-flowing display of winners and strong serves became a clunky show of nerves, and Siniaková took full advantage with back-to-back breaks to steal the first set. Among them was David Beckham, who sat in the royal box for Monday's five-set, first-round thriller between Carlos Alcaraz and Fabio Fognini. Beckham posed for a selfie with Maria Sharapova, the five-time Grand Slam winner and former Wimbledon champion who retired in 2020. Beckham's right hand was in a cast from a recent wrist surgery. We've debated this before about what is the coolest version of the best kind of way to finish a World Series game, like what's the final out? Like, you don't ever get, or, or we've talked about it for like the first career hit, right? What is, what is an ideal first career hit? Cause sometimes it's just like a squibber and you beat out an infield hit. Advertisement And you have like a replay review, and it's like this was, well, maybe the slider isn't necessarily the pitch he is known for, but it probably should be, compared to the curveball when you consider how effective it's been even this late in his career and to get him looking to finish the inning, it was really, really, really cool. The Dodgers broadcast, this was perfect. The music in the stadium, the theater, Steven Nelson on the call. Handled it sublimely. Kershaw walks into the dugout, kind of hugs every single human being that's in there, which is always sweet and funny, like he hugs PK Hernandez for a long while, and then he like, you know, Dalton Rushing, thanks for the two games you caught me. Advertisement Thanks for showing up, big guy. Um, and then he comes back out, tips his cap, they play the music, he waves to the family. And then they continue on with the game. He is one of only three to reach 3,000 only pitching for one team, along with Walter Johnson and Bob Gibson. And that is where a moment like this becomes so special and carries so much weight because for a pitcher in particular, to stay in one place for this long and to be good enough for this long to get here is, amazing. And that is why he's one of the greatest of all time, and why his association with the Dodgers is tough to match in just all of baseball history in terms of player and team.
