The seven British players looking to make an impact at the French Open

The seven British players looking to make an impact at the French Open

Glasgow Times22-05-2025

Main-draw action begins on May 25, with the British contingent aiming to do significantly better than last year, when they failed to win a match between them.
Here, the PA news agency takes a closer look at the home contenders.
Jack Draper
What a start to the season it has been for the 23-year-old, who will go into the year's second grand slam ranked fifth in the world. Draper won his maiden Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells, reached another final in Madrid and has established himself as one of the most feared competitors on the men's tour. Draper is yet to win a match at Roland Garros but will be targeting a deep run.
Emma Raducanu

The turbulent career of Raducanu shows no sign of settling down, with more coaching upheaval, up-and-down form and a distressing stalker incident so far in 2025. But she does appear to be gaining confidence on clay and her current informal partnership with coach Mark Petchey, while unconventional, seems to be working for her at the moment.
Katie Boulter
Boulter started the season with hopes of pushing into the top 20 but a minor foot injury was an untimely setback and she has since slipped to 38 in the rankings. The 28-year-old would be the first to admit clay is not her best surface, and she is still chasing her maiden main-draw win at Roland Garros, but she goes into the tournament boosted by a second-tier title in the French capital.
Jacob Fearnley

Another first for the Scot, who is still less than a year into his professional career but already closing in on a place in the top 50. The 23-year-old had never played a senior match on clay prior to last month but continues to adapt remarkably quickly to his new life and claimed the first top-20 victory of his career over Tomas Machac in Madrid.
Sonay Kartal
Kartal's rise has not been quite as rapid as Fearnley's but a year ago she was not ranked highly enough even to get into qualifying for the French Open and now finds herself just outside the world's top 50. Having reached the fourth round in Indian Wells as a qualifier, the 23-year-old from Brighton made a strong Billie Jean King Cup debut for Britain on clay.

While Fearnley and Kartal have been rising up the rankings, former British number one Norrie has been heading in the opposite direction. Once a top-10 player, Norrie is clinging onto a place in the top 100. Now 29, he faces a tough task to claw his way back towards the top of the game but there have been a few encouraging signs on clay.
Jodie Burrage
Burrage has entered the tournament using the protected ranking of 85 she held prior to wrist and ankle surgeries last year that kept her out for six months. She has found wins hard to come by so far this season and will feel a lot more comfortable when the season moves from clay to grass.

Live Boulter and Raducanu vs Kichenok and Routliffe: Score and latest Queen's updates

Latest updates Luke Slater 11 June 2025 11:18am 11:18AM Katie Boulter overcomes serving woes to live out Queen's 'dream' It was a winning start in the singles for Boulter yesterday, despite some troubles with her serve. She overcame Alja Tomljanovic 7-6, 1-6, 6-4 to progress to the next round. 'I feel like I had a lot of emotions today,' she said. 'I think it's very easy to get caught up in just trying to get your first grass-court match. Also coming to such a historic venue, as well, which holds a lot of purpose and a lot of familiar feelings when I have come here before. 'To get the women back here feels very special. It's actually something I dreamt of, having come here the last couple of years to watch the men play, so I'm just really grateful to be on this court.' 11:06AM Good morning 'They' are calling it Boultercanu. The British Nos 1 and 2 (and world Nos 34 and 37) have teamed up in the women's doubles at Queen's. Their tournament got off to a winning start on Monday, with a comfortable 6-4, 6-2 victory over Wu Fang-hsien and Jiang Xinyu. They admitted they were quite nervous before the match, which was played on Court One rather than Centre Court. 'I was actually very nervous before the match,' Raducanu, who has limited experience in doubles tennis, said. 'I don't know if Katie could tell. But probably more nervous than the singles, because I just didn't really necessarily know what to do, but I'm really happy once we got out there. Katie made me feel so comfortable, and I'm just so pleased to get a win on the board.' Today they are in the quarter-finals of the competition, facing Lyudmyla Kichenok of Ukraine and Erin Routliffe of New Zealand. They defeated the all-British pairing of Jodie Burrage and Sonay Kartal in the first round in a tight 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (7-1), contest. Kichenok has a decent doubles pedigree. She has never made it into the main draw for a grand slam singles tournament but won the US Open in women's doubles last year and has featured in an Australian Open final and a French Open and Wimbledon semi-final. In mixed doubles she won Wimbledon in 2023. Routliffe too has a fine record, winning the US Open in 2023, making the Wimbledon final last year and winning the Tour Finals in 2024, too. Fair to say that this will likely be a tougher task than the first-round match. But Raducanu and Boulter have the game, if they click.

Liverpool hero's agent admits ex-Reds star would love Anfield return this summer

While attention remains firmly placed on whether move can be sealed for Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, Arne Slot remains in the market for a new assistant after John Heitinga's departure Dirk Kuyt would love to rejoin Liverpool as Arne Slot's assistant manager but his agent has ruled out the prospect of the Anfield cult hero replacing John Heitinga as the head coach's key lieutenant. Slot is in the market for a new assistant coach after Heitinga last week became the new boss at Ajax and that prompted speculation that former forward Kuyt could step in - having previously had a chance to work as an assistant under the Reds chief while at AZ Alkmaar. ‌ However Kuyt's representative Rob Jansen has said the move will not happen. ‌ 'No, it will be a different assistant coach. That would have been great for him,' Jansen told podcast KieftJansenEgmondGijp. 'The assistant of Liverpool will be someone else. It would have been great for Dirk. He would have loved to go to Liverpool. Assistant there is of course a serious level.' In a conversation on Peter Crouch's podcast earlier this season Kuyt confirmed he turned down Slot's offer at Alkmaar. 'I know him very well. I had the opportunity when I retired from football to become his assistant at AZ,' Kuyt said. 'I didn't choose to become his assistant which I regret of course now. "But when he was at Feyenoord he gave me the opportunity to work a week alongside him to see how he's training and preparing for a game, so that was really interesting and of course I follow him very closely.' Kuyt, currently in charge of Belgian top flight side Beerschot, spent six seasons at Liverpool, scoring 71 times in 285 appearances. But his only piece of silverware was a League Cup. ‌ Among the other names linked with replacing Heitinga are Marino Pusic, who was Slot's assistant at AZ and Feyenoord and last month said farewell to Shakhtar Donetsk. Etienne Reijnen, the current Feyenoord assistant, was in contention for a role last summer but there were reported issues with his work permit. Liverpool have already had an active start to the off-season with Jeremie Frimpong arriving from Bayer Leverkusen as Trent Alexander-Arnold's replacement, while Milos Kerkez is close to being signed from Bournemouth and talks continue with Leverkusen around star man Florian Wirtz over a British record deal that could end up being worth £125m.

Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter live: Tennis scores from Queen's Club doubles match

Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter are back in action at Queen's Club today, this time on the same side of the net after both recorded singles wins yesterday. The pair romped to a 6-4, 6-2 victory over China's Xinyu Jiang and Fang-Hsien Wu of Taiwan in the first round on Monday, their first-ever outing as a doubles partnership and Raducanu's first experience of doubles since 2022. Both Brits were back on Tuesday to continue a promising start to the grass season with first-round singles wins: Raducanu made light work of Spanish qualifier Cristina Bucsa, while Boulter was made to toil in a three-set victory over Australian Ajla Tomljanovic. The pair take on Ukraine's Lyudmyla Kichenok and New Zealand's Erin Routliffe at 12pm on Court One, with their opponents denying them an all-British affair by defeating Sonay Kartal and Jodie Burrage in the first round. Good morning Hello and welcome to day three at Queen's Club! Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter kick off the action with the first match of the day in their second-round doubles match, beginning at 12pm. Later on, Sonay Kartal will bid to earn another top-20 scalp after defeating Daria Kasatkina on Monday: she takes on Amanda Anisimova later this afternoon. Flo Clifford11 June 2025 11:05
