Toddy adulteration in Hyderabad: Death toll rises to nine

A resident of Hydernagar, she was among the 23 patients admitted to the hospital after consuming spurious toddy last week.
The adulterated toddy claimed nine lives and affected about 60 others in Kukatpally area. The victims, who had consumed toddy at different shops on July 6 and 7, approached various private hospitals on July 8 with complaints of vomiting, diarrhoea and low blood pressure.
The police and Prohibition and Excise Department had shifted them to Gandhi Hospital and Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS).
Four of the 16 people currently undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital were reported to be critical. They have been identified as 61-year-old Vadla Sugunamma, 47-year-old K. Nirmala, 55-year-old B. Latha and 26-year-old Manjala Swapna. They were placed on ventilator support, oxygen therapy and inotropic medication.
The hospital has not recorded new admissions since July 12.
Out of 36 affected people admitted at NIMS, 23 are undergoing treatment. According to hospital authorities, 13 patients have been discharged. Seven more are likely to be discharged later in the day.
Meanwhile, the Prohibition and Excise Department and police are continuing their investigation into toddy adulteration. The officials were questioning those arrested in connection with toddy supply and distribution.
Officials suspects that Methanol or chloral hydrate or Alprazolam may have been mixed with the toddy.
Meanwhile, a couple was admitted to Gandhi Hospital due to their strange behaviour after consuming toddy.
The incident occurred at Ramreddy Nagar in Jeedimetla. A man and his wife, hailing from Nizamabad district, had consumed toddy on Sunday and later their relatives shifted them to hospital.
It was not known if it was a case of toddy adulteration. The police were investigating the case now.

Delhi: Syndicate transporting banned anxiety drug Alphrazam busted, 2 arrested
With the arrest of two persons, the Delhi Police Crime Branch on Saturday said it has busted a syndicate transporting banned Alprazolam tablets, a prescription drug used to treat anxiety. Drugs worth Rs 1 crore have been seized, police added. The police identified the accused as Nishant Pal and Ajay Kumar. On July 28, the Crime Branch's Anti Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) said it received a tip-off about a consignment of Alprazolam tablets that was set to be delivered near Dilshad Garden Metro station. The ANTF team led a trap near the Anand Vihar ISBT flyover and apprehended Pal, who had in his possession 6.240 kg (around 60,000) of Alprazolam tablets in cartons, which he was carrying on a bike, police said. 'He used to work in a pharmacy and gained good knowledge of medicines. On demand, he used to supply Alprazolam tablets in different parts of Delhi-NCR without prescription and invoices, charging extra money for each delivery,' DCP (Crime) Sanjeev Yadav said. During questioning, Nishant allegedly revealed the name of Ajay Kumar, a resident of Ghaziabad. Police said Kumar led the team to a godown at Rajendra Nagar in Ghaziabad, where over 3 kg of tablets were stored. 'Ajay said he would supply the tablets to Nishant – which he would pick up from a factory in Ghaziabad – and then supply across Delhi-NCR,' an officer said.

Racket selling Alprax tablets illegally busted
New Delhi: A racket involved in selling Alprax (Alprazolam) tablets to students and drug addicts was busted by Crime Branch, with the seizure of approximately 60,000 tablets. Two suspects were arrested in connection with the case. The accused were identified as Nishant Pal and Ajay Kumar. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav said that police received specific information about the illegal supply of psychotropic substances near Dilshad Garden Metro Station. Acting on the tip-off, a team was deployed, and a trap was laid at Apsara Border–Anand Vihar ISBT Flyover in Delhi. During the operation, Nishant Pal, 23, a resident of Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, was apprehended with a motorcycle. After following the mandatory procedures under the NDPS Act, a total of 6.240 kg of Alprazolam tablets—approximately 60,000 tablets—were recovered from a khaki carton he was carrying, Yadav said.
