Yes, Chef! These actors looked at home playing pros in the kitchen. Here's what inspired them — and how they prepped.
'I spent a lot of time as a fly on the wall, and I'd help them prep where you can't really screw up anything too badly,' the 34-year-old said of shadowing the cooks at Pasjoli — an elevated French restaurant in Santa Monica, Calif. — before taking on the role of the obsessive, talented chef Carmy in the Hulu hit. 'I like spending time in these places, I like all the people that work there, and I like all learning about this craft.'
Growing up, the 75-year-old, who played the ebullient Julia Child in the 2009 movie, knew nothing about fine dining. 'I remember when I was 10 years old, going to the little girl's house up the street, and she and her mother were sitting at the kitchen table doing something… She told me they were making mashed potatoes,' Meryl said. 'And I said, 'What do you mean? Mashed potatoes come in a box!' They were peeling boiled potatoes, and I had never seen a potato before.'
'Either eat a lot before or be ready to go eat something afterwards, because the food is spectacular,' the 55-year-old bragged of his new Netflix movie about a grieving man who decides to open a restaurant staffed by Italian grandmothers, also known as nonnas. Talia Shire, Lorraine Bracco, Brenda Vaccaro and Susan Sarandon play the women who bring their family dishes — and spicy personalities — to the table. As Vince says, 'Food is love.'
In the 2014 flick, the 58-year-old plays a brilliant chef who ditches his stuffy restaurant job to open a food truck. Jon also directed the indie production on a tight budget. 'We would eat what the stuff after we filmed,' He said of the food prepared by famed chef Roi Choy that was used on set. 'We really made an effort not to waste. Even when we broke down the pig, all those pig parts went home with different crew members.'
To prep to play an exacting, murderous chef catering to the ultra-rich in the darkly funny 2022 horror film, the 62-year-old consulted with three-star Michelin chef Dominique Crenn. 'She gave me a lot of tips on how you behave, how you move, how you talk to people. The shorthand of communication in that level of kitchen,' Ralph recalled. Not so much the actual cooking, though: 'Don't ask me to chop an onion!'

Netflix Should Pick Up ‘The Wheel Of Time' After Amazon Cancels Its Best Live-Action Fantasy Show
Wheel Of Time It's been a tough run for fantasy shows lately. Ever since the massive popularity of Game Of Thrones, streaming services have been trying – and failing – to replicate that success. Amazon tried with two big-budget fantasy series: The Rings Of Power and The Wheel Of Time. The latter was killed so the former could live on, though many fans wonder why the better of the two was cancelled while the execrable Rings Of Power was given yet another season. One notable fan who publicly questioned the cancellation is Brandon Sanderson, who penned the final three books in Robert Jordan's fantasy series. 'I do think it's a shame," the author said in a comment on his YouTube channel, "as while I had my problems with the show, it had a fanbase who deserved better than a cancelation after the best season. I won't miss being largely ignored; they wanted my name on it for legitimacy, but not to involve me in any meaningful way.' I couldn't agree more. While the show made some pretty major departures from the source material, and while there is no doubt it got off to an incredibly rough start, Season 3 was easily the best of the bunch and it was clear that the creators and cast were finally finding their feet. As I noted in a previous post, the show deserves another season – warts and all – because it is currently not just the best live-action fantasy series on Prime Video, but really the only major live-action fantasy series worth watching these days. Indeed, unless the new HBO Harry Potter series can save fantasy, things are looking pretty grim for the genre. House Of The Dragon certainly isn't sitting well with fans after its disappointing second season. Television was the best hope for epic fantasy on screen, as outside of a few diamonds in the rough (Peter Jackson's Lord Of The Rings trilogy, for instance, or Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) there are few fantasy films worth taking seriously. As with other major cancellations of TV shows that deserved better, the hope from fans is less that Amazon will reconsider and more that some other streamer might pick up the show and give it new life. I said much the same thing when HBO canned the excellent – if incredibly bizarre – sci-fi series Raised By Wolves. Netflix has had terrible luck in its attempt to create its own Game Of Thrones, with series like Shadow & Bone not making much of a splash before their own untimely demise, and The Witcher fizzling out after a strong first season. And while it has projects in the works, like its Narnia films, there really isn't much to show for the company's investment in fantasy. A smart move would be to pick up The Wheel Of Time and give it a second chance at the biggest streamer out there. There's a baked-in audience. The cast and crew is already in place. Such a move is not unheard of, after all. Amazon saved The Expanse from an early grave, much to the delight of fans. That ended up being one of the most popular sci-fi series of all time. Netflix certainly has the cash to acquire the rights and it would earn a huge PR victory in the process. Over 124,000 fans have already signed a petition to save the show, and I suspect quite a few would happily fork over the cash for a Netflix subscription if the streamer made the move. It might be pie-in-the-sky thinking, but I genuinely believe that Wheel Of Time on Netflix makes sense, and would give the streamer the premium fantasy series its been hoping for all these years, while taking a feather from Amazon's cap in the process. That's basically two wins for the price of one. Of course, I will beat the animated fantasy series drum once more and just urge more streamers to consider animated adaptations of fantasy epics going forward. I'd love an animated Lord Of The Rings series or a show based on Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles. Hell, I'd love to see an animated reboot of The Walking Dead. For now, it's just hope. But rebellions are built on hope.

Eagles fan Mike Trout wrote Super Bowl LIX score on his bat knob — now it's in a baseball card
NFL fans commemorate their team's Super Bowl victories in all sorts of ways, but Mike Trout might be the first to do it on a bat knob. The South Jersey native who is often seen in his end-zone seats at Lincoln Financial Field through the fall and winter wrote a special inscription on the bottom of one of his game-used bats after his Philadelphia Eagles won Super Bowl LIX: 'Eagles 40 Chiefs 22. Fly Eagles Fly!' That knob has since been cut off the bat and put into a one-of-a-kind baseball card autographed by Trout that will be in Topps' upcoming Tier One set (release date has yet to be announced). He wrote 'Go Birds!' on his one-of-one autographed MLB logo patch card in 2023 Topps Triple Threads and 'Fly Eagles Fly!' on his 2023 Topps Pristine 1/1 card. But if you're looking for crossover appeal for sports card and trading card game collectors, the recently retired Evan Longoria helped create what could become the most expensive bat knob card in industry history. On a Search for an Old E.V., Jay Leno's Car Obsession Came Up Clutch

As an energy reporter on the Business desk of The New York Times, I often cover the transition to electrify the world around us, including automobiles and heating and cooling systems. But until I spoke with the historian at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, I did not know that electric cars rattled down city streets as far back as the mid-1890s. A century ago, roughly a third of taxi drivers in New York City shuttled passengers around in electric cars. I set out to write an article about these cars, and a time before lawmakers gave deference to the oil industry by offering numerous tax breaks, paving the way for gasoline-powered vehicles. But finding an original E.V. that I could ride in proved difficult. Most of them sit in museums and personal collections. Enter the comedian — and car collector — Jay Leno. My editor suggested I reach out to Mr. Leno after learning about his 1909 Baker Electric, housed in his famous garage. Mr. Leno's team gave an enthusiastic 'Yes' in reply. When I arrived at his warehouse garage in Burbank, Calif., in April, Mr. Leno had his Baker Electric charged and ready to hit the streets. The 116-year-old car, which had been refurbished, looked like it had just rolled off the showroom floor. Still, the wooden high-top body, 36-inch rubber wheels and Victorian-style upholstery whispered the car's age.
