Ashish Nehra has a clear vision: Shubman Gill credits GT coach for IPL 2025 success

India Today22-05-2025
Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill has credited head coach Ashish Nehra's "clear vision and excellent communication" as the driving force behind the franchise's impressive showing in IPL 2025. With nine wins from 12 matches, GT currently sit at the top of the points table and continue to look like one of the most well-drilled and consistent sides in the league.Speaking to JioHotstar, Shubman Gill praised Ashish Nehra for shaping a team that knows its strengths and sticks to them. He said Nehra laid down a clear plan for success right from the franchise's first season in 2022, when Gujarat Titans won the title in their debut year.advertisement"I think Ashish Nehra had a clear vision when Gujarat Titans came in during the first year - he knew how he wanted to build the team and define player roles. His communication with the players, both on and off the field, has been excellent.
IPL 2025, GT vs LSG Live UpdatesNehra's methodical yet relaxed approach has become a defining feature of the Titans' setup. While other franchises often rely heavily on marquee names, GT have built a well-rounded unit with a clear emphasis on bowling - an area Gill believes is often overlooked in T20 cricket."Many believe that the IPL is won by batters, but our ideology is different. It doesn't matter how many runs you score if you can't defend them. The way he guides the bowling unit has been a major strength for us," he said.advertisement"There are always areas to improve, and the way he works individually with players - especially the bowlers - stands out.The 25-year-old opener has also been in sublime form this season, forming one of the most successful opening partnerships of IPL 2025 alongside Sai Sudharsan. The Gill-Sudharsan duo has piled up 839 runs at a staggering average of 76.27, including three century partnerships and four fifty-plus stands.Gill pointed out that their chemistry stems not just from technical prowess but from smart cricket."I think the way we bat is not exactly similar, but the left-right combination helps. We both run very well between the wickets, and we're the kind of players who like to outsmart the opponent - including the bowlers," Gill said.In a format increasingly tilted in favour of power-hitting and one-dimensional roles due to the Impact Player rule, Gill believes GT's nuanced style gives them an edge."In T20 cricket, especially with the introduction of the Impact Player rule, that skill of outsmarting the opposition has declined a bit. But I think our team still does it really well.Gill believes GT's ability to adapt to different conditions lies at the heart of their success in the unpredictable terrain of IPL cricket.advertisement"It's easy to swing freely on good cement wickets, but real skill lies in reading conditions, assessing the situation, and consistently putting up fighting totals - that, I believe, is the key to our success."Stay updated on IPL 2025 with India Today! Shubman Gill unlikely for Asia Cup T20I with selectors keen on status quo ahead of Tuesday selection meeting

India's Test captain Shubman Gill might find it difficult to get into the Asia Cup T20 side, with selectors struggling to find a way to slot him into the squad of 15. The Indian team management and selectors are of the opinion that Gill at the moment doesn't fit into their T20 scheme of things. Which means there are chances of Gill not boarding a flight to Dubai as the Indian team management want to stick to players whom they have backed post the 2024 T20 World Cup. The Indian Express understands that the selectors will convey this to the Indian board bosses before the selection committee assembles on August 19, to make them aware of the situation. The Indian team will continue to be led by Suryakumar Yadav, who has cleared his fitness. It is understood that in a series of informal talks before the selection, there was discussion on Gill's inclusion in the playing eleven. If India's Test captain makes it in the squad the team management would have to open the innings with him. However, with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson having done well in the top order, the team wants to stick with their tried and tested openers in whom they have invested so far. There was also a discussion informally on whether to drop Tilak Varma and accommodate Gill. However, the team management felt that it would be unfair on the left-handed batsman, who is holding the number two ranking in International Cricket Council (ICC) T20I's batting rankings. The team doesn't want Gill to be seen warming the bench. This means recent success in England, where a young Indian cricket team without stars earned a 2-2 draw, might not have much of an impact on the upcoming selection, given it's two different formats. ALSO READ | Empty slots: Players in contention for the last two spots for India in Asia Cup squad 'If Gill is included then he will straight away bat at the top and if he doesn't get a game then there is no point in having him. At the same time it will be unfair on Sanju, who did well in the past. If Gill gets in then Sanju might have to miss out and Jitesh might get a game,' a source in the BCCI informed. The Indian team management and selectors are looking at Mumbai's Yashasvi Jaiswal as the third opener. Jaiswal was part of the Indian team that won the 2024 World Cup but didn't get a game. There was an informal discussion whether to drop Jaiswal and pick Gill but it seems that the suggestion has been turned down. Gill's last appearance in T20I's came in July 2024 against Sri Lanka in Pallekele. India played a T20I series against Bangladesh at home followed by a tour to South Africa and later a home series against England. The selectors had not picked Gill in those three series that India played. However, with recent success in Test cricket, Gill is pushing his case hard for inclusion in white ball formats. In the IPL, Gill was the fourth highest run getter after Sai Sudharsan (759), Surya (717), Kohli (657) with 650 runs. Shreyas (604) and Jaiswal (559) were 6th and 7th respectively. With his success in the red ball format, the buzz had risen to make him the all-format captain of the Indian team. However, selectors are not jumping the gun after the England success and have decided to carry on with their old captain who is yet to lose a series in his leadership stint. The selectors and team management alongwith BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia will have the final round of discussion on August 19. The Asia Cup will be played from September 9 to 28.

India squad for Asia Cup: Major gaps and possible changes as report makes big claim on Gill, Siraj

India's squad for Asia Cup could see some big changes, but Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj may still miss out. We take a look at the major gaps in the Indian T20I squad and possible changes. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors are set to have a tough time when they meet on Tuesday (19 August) to pick the India squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. A tough time because a lot has changed in Indian cricket since the last time they played T20Is against England in January-February this year. Shubman Gill, who was not a part of the T20I side, recently led the Indian Test team to a memorable 2-2 draw in England and is being seen as a frontrunner to make a comeback to the shortest format. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal could also come back. Similarly, Shreyas Iyer is touted by some as a certainty after guiding India to the Champions Trophy 2025 title win and the Punjab Kings to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 final. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Here's a look at India's last T20I squad: Sanju Samson (wk), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav (c), Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Mohammed Shami, Varun Chakravarthy, Harshit Rana, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Washington Sundar, Ramandeep Singh, Arshdeep Singh This squad is expected to see some big changes. Gill, Siraj to miss out on Asia Cup? Kuldeep Yadav, who missed the England T20Is due to a back injury, is expected to replace Ravi Bishnoi, or both spinners could come in, and Washington Sundar may replace Ramandeep Singh. Shami will not be a part of the squad as he is not fully fit, but Jasprit Bumrah is set to come back. The openers – Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma – and Tilak Varma and Surykumar Yadav have sealed their spots in the top four. However, it will be interesting to see if Gill and Jaiswal are picked after an impressive Test series. Even if they are picked, will they straightaway get into the playing XI despite Samson and Sharma's heroics? A report in Cricibuzz says that while selectors may want to pick a third opener, Gill currently trails Jaiswal and none of them may get picked, or only Jaiswal might, unless Gambhir swings things in Gill's favour. It also states that the hero of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, pacer Mohammed Siraj, may not get a call back to the T20Is. Gaps in India's T20I squad And while selectors face the pressure of picking Gill, the two major spots to consider for them are that of an extra batter or an all-rounder and the third seamer. There's little clarity on these two spots. The third seamer could be one among Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna, as per Cricbuzz, while Arshdeep Singh is also a certainty. Also, there's room to include one more batter in the middle-order. In their last T20I, India had three all-rounders in the team – Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel. While Hardik and Axar don't face any pressure, Dube may be dropped. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The selectors have a chance here to add Iyer to the squad, but in such a case, Rinku Singh, who was also a part of the XI against England, may drop to the bench, at least, as management may want to include an all-rounder like Sundar to the playing XI. This is a big decision that the selectors have to make. If they decide to add a batter, players like Riyan Parag are also an option. India's possible Asia Cup squad: Sanju Samson (wk), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav (c), Shubman Gill/Yashasvi Jaiswal/Shreyas Iyer, Rinku Singh, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy, Harshit Rana/Prasidh Krishna, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh

Shubman Gill vs Yashasvi Jaiswal: R Ashwin Makes Bold Asia Cup 2025 Squad Prediction

The Ajit Agarkar -led selection committee is all set to pick the India squad for the Asia Cup 2025, with a number of bold decisions reportedly set to be taken. There are reportedly different opinions over the selection of Shubman Gill, India's newly-crowned Test captain in the T20I squad despite the splendid Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 campaign he had for the Gujarat Titans. Only one of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswaly will seemingly be picked for the Asia Cup. For former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, that player has to be Jaiswal. Ashwin feels Rohit Sharma 's absence from the T20I format instantly opens the door for Jaiswal. But, the veteran spinner can't say the same for Gill, who has the Indian cricketing spectrum divided over his potential return to the shortest format. "There are a few talking points regarding the Asia Cup. The first question that comes to everyone's mind is whether Shubman Gill fits into the T20 plans because in the last World Cup, Yashasvi Jaiswal was the backup opener. So Jaiswal automatically gets a kick-in. Rohit Sharma is not going to be a part of that team, so Jaiswal automatically gets a look-in," said Ashwin on his YouTube channel. Several reports have suggested that India's opening pair for the Asia Cup will be Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. However, Ashwin feels Jaiswal is a certain pick in the team. There, however, is a tricky choice for the selection committee to make when it comes to picking one batter between Sanju Samson and Shubman Gill. "Now, who is going to be that other opener? Shubman Gill had an outstanding series. Can he return to the squad? Sanju Samson has had a fabulous run as a T20 opener for India. So I think it is a tricky state for the selectors," he added.
