3.00 Ayr – Class 4 Handicap (7f; Racing TV)
KELPIE GREY was as good as ever when second in a Class 3 handicap over a mile at Ayr on his reappearance, a fine effort after 302 days off.
This drop in trip is no bad thing – he's a two-time course-and-distance winner – and he also drops in class. With the Jim Goldie stable in flying form, he has strong claims.
4.05 Ayr – Class 4 Handicap (1m 2f; Racing TV)
The William Haggas-trained CROWN OF OAKS disappointed when 1/3 favourite for a Redcar maiden last time out, but he has since been gelded and now steps up in trip, and he was so promising on his first two starts that he still makes plenty of appeal on his handicap debut.
It's fair to say the form of his reappearance at Newbury, where he finished third in a maiden, hasn't worked out. However, he went through that race like a good horse, shaping better than the bare result suggests, and he was entered in the 2,000 Guineas and the Dante at the time.
Haggas had won the same Newbury maiden the previous year with the subsequent Irish Champion Stakes winner Economics, and in 2022 he won it with My Prospero, who went on to win a Group 2.
Crown Of Oaks, a 260,000gns yearling, has an opening mark of 79, and he's a brother to English Oak whose peak official rating is 108.
When is the next big racing festival?
The week-long Galway Festival kicks off in Ireland today, and tomorrow it's Glorious Goodwood. Check out the latest Glorious Goodwood free bets and betting offers.
The latter is a five-day fixture and is set to feature Field Of Gold, possibly the best horse in the world, in the Sussex Stakes on Wednesday, one of three Group 1 races at the meeting.
What does NAP mean?
NAP is a word used in betting circles to describe a prediction that a tipster thinks has a particularly strong chance of winning.
Many horse racing tipsters pick out a 'NAP of the day', which is their favoured selection from all the races across the different meetings.
The term derives from the French card game Napoleon. When players of this game thought they had a particularly strong hand that they would win with, they would shout 'Napoleon'.

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill set for lengthy absence following ACL surgery

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill is set to miss a significant portion of the upcoming season after undergoing successful surgery for an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. The Blues kick off their Premier League campaign at home to Crystal Palace on August 17, but Enzo Maresca will not have the 22-year-old at his disposal after Colwill sustained the injury in training at their Cobham base. The Colwill blow could possibly open the door for Jorrel Hato, the Blues' new signing from Ajax. A Chelsea statement read: 'Defender Levi Colwill has today undergone successful surgery to an anterior cruciate ligament injury. 'The 22-year-old had reported back to Cobham for pre-season at the start of this week, before unfortunately sustaining the injury in training. 'Medical assessments confirmed surgery would be the required course of action. 'Levi will now begin his recovery and be supported by the club's medical department at Cobham during his rehabilitation phase.'

Glenn McGrath predicts Australia to win the Ashes 5-0 and names key battle

Glenn McGrath has made his obligatory prediction ahead of the Ashes, once again forecasting a 5-0 whitewash by Australia. McGrath's bold prediction has become part of Ashes tradition, although it is rarely an accurate one – Australia have not won all five Tests since 2013-14. But England have not won any Test match in Australia since 2011, and the bowling great is convinced that trend will continue when the rivals meet over November, December and January. 'It's very rare for me to make a prediction, isn't it?' McGrath joked, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live. 'And I can't make a different one: five-nil. 'I'm very confident with our team. When you've got Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon firing in their home conditions, it's going to be pretty tough. Plus, that track record England have had, it'd be interesting to see if they can win a Test.' England have arguably the best middle order in Test cricket, with Joe Root, Harry Brook and Ben Stokes at No 4, No 5 and No 6 in the batting. And McGrath sees their battle with the experienced Australian bowling attack as key to the outcome. 'This series will be a big one for Root,' said McGrath. 'He's never really done that well in Australia, he's not even got a 100 over there, so he'll be keen to get out there. He's in fine form. 'Brook's the one that I've enjoyed watching. He just goes out there, plays his game, and takes it on. The Australians will need to get on him pretty early. Ben Duckett is such an aggressive opener. Zak Crawley would be keen to score a few more runs than he has previously. 'It's the top order or top and middle order of England against the Australian fast bowlers and Lyon. That's going to be a big match-up.'

FanDuel owner raises profit forecast as gamblers' winning streak ends

DUBLIN, Aug 7 (Reuters) - FanDuel-owner Flutter raised its forecast for full-year profit growth on Thursday after a six-month-long winning streak for U.S. gamblers swung sharply back in the favour of bookmakers during a better-than-expected second quarter. Bookmakers tend to suffer when favourites win and Flutter, the world's largest online betting company, cut its U.S. core profit guidance by $180 million in May following a series of unlikely customer-friendly sports results. Less favorable outcomes for punters in the second quarter allowed it to claw $100 million of that back and increase its group-wide profit forecast to $3.3 billion from $3.18 billion in May, which would represent 40% year-on-year growth. Flutter's second-quarter adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of $919 million, up 25% year-on-year, were above the $816 million expected by an average of eight analysts with LSEG SmartEstimate. Core profit at FanDuel, which had market-leading 41% and 27% shares of the U.S. sports betting and iGaming markets, jumped 54% to $400 million during the quarter. Flutter's international division, which includes the Paddy Power, Betfair and Sisal brands, grew its profits by 13% to $591 million, with more than two-thirds of revenue growth attributed to recently completed acquisitions in Italy and Brazil. Flutter said it is closely monitoring U.S. regulatory developments in the event contracts market and assessing the potential participation strategies this may present. Event contracts, which allow traders to bet on specific outcomes and profit from predictions on everything from sports and entertainment to politics and the economy, have exploded in popularity in the U.S. since last year's presidential election. "There are often times when it's good to be early, but I think there's often times when you've got to make sure you see how regulatory considerations pan out before you leap in and potentially cause yourself challenges with stakeholders," Flutter CEO Peter Jackson told Reuters. Flutter operates a similar business in Betfair, the world's largest betting exchange. The head of U.S. rival DraftKings (DKNG.O), opens new tab said on Thursday that it was in "monitor mode" while it actively explores event contract opportunities.
