Tabung Kasih@HAWANA inspires seniman to set up artistes welfare fund
Its president, Rozaidi Abdul Jamil, better known as Zed Zaidi, said the HAWANA fund is an inclusive initiative that can provide ongoing benefits to media practitioners.
'The successful establishment of a fund to look after the welfare of media practitioners has inspired Seniman to create a similar fund for local artistes.
'At the moment, we do not yet have a welfare fund, but under the Malaysia Film Association Coalition (Gafema), we are planning to establish a special fund similar to Tabung Kasih@HAWANA to protect the welfare of those in the arts industry,' he said when met at the HAWANA 2025 Carnival at Sunway Putra Mall here today.
Zed Zaidi also sees potential collaboration between Seniman and the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) platform through MyCheck Malaysia (Bernama's fact-checking unit) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to educate artistes on efforts to combat false information.
'This is my first time hearing about MyCheck Malaysia. It has the potential to become one of the platforms for special programmes with celebrities as agents to create awareness for the public,' he said.
He said apart from celebrities, Seniman also comprises influencers who often lack clear guidelines for information sharing.
'Sometimes when they share something, it may be based on facts but gets distorted until it turns into falsehood, which the public may then perceive as fact. This contributes to the spread of fake news and misinformation.
'Therefore, we can combine suitable programmes, including workshops or awareness sessions involving the media to educate the public about the importance of fact-checking,' he said.
The HAWANA 2025 Carnival runs for three days starting today and is part of this year's HAWANA celebration, themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics'.
The highlight of HAWANA 2025 will be the official launch by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.
Over 1,000 media practitioners, representatives from local journalist associations and media organisations from ASEAN member states have been invited, bringing together media professionals and industry experts to exchange ideas and foster strategic partnerships.

‘Been caught suing': Jane's Addiction reunion turns into legal showdown after onstage fight
NEW YORK, July 18 — Four decades after rising to fame with hits like Been Caught Stealing, the original lineup of Jane's Addiction is now back in the spotlight — but not for the reasons fans had hoped. According to The New York Times, the bandmates have filed lawsuits against one another following a dramatic onstage altercation last September that abruptly ended their first reunion tour in 14 years. What began as a nostalgic comeback has spiralled into a courtroom saga. It all went south during a performance in Boston when frontman Perry Farrell physically confronted guitarist Dave Navarro in full view of the audience. As seen in widely circulated video footage, Farrell slammed his shoulder into Navarro and appeared to throw a punch before being restrained. That moment proved to be the tour's death knell, as the remaining 15 dates were cancelled soon after. Now, the fallout has hit the legal stage. Bassist Eric Avery, drummer Stephen Perkins, and Navarro have filed suit in Los Angeles Superior Court, accusing Farrell of assault, battery, negligence, emotional distress, and breach of contract. They claim his actions left them not only with a failed tour but also a scrapped record deal. 'They have been wronged, want the accurate story told and they deserve a resolution,' said Christopher Frost, the trio's lawyer, in a statement reported by The New York Times. Farrell and his wife, Etty Lau Farrell — also a performer — hit back with a countersuit, accusing the others of 'a yearslong bullying campaign' that allegedly included sabotaging his performances by playing their instruments so loudly he couldn't hear himself sing. In their filing, Navarro and the others described Farrell's behaviour as the catalyst for the group's collapse, citing incidents of the singer forgetting lyrics, mumbling incoherently on stage, and drinking openly from a wine bottle during performances. They wrote: 'The band suffered a swift and painful death at the hands of Farrell's unprovoked anger and complete lack of self-control.' Following the altercation, Navarro publicly pointed to 'the mental health difficulties of our singer' as the reason for the cancellation, while Farrell issued a remorseful apology to his bandmates, saying his 'breaking point resulted in inexcusable behaviour.' Farrell's legal team has since pushed back, accusing his bandmates of trying to 'control the narrative' and painting themselves as the victims. 'It's a transparent attempt to control the narrative and present themselves as the so-called 'good guys' — a move that's both typical and predictable,' their statement read. For fans who once hoped the band's legacy might get a proper second act, it's a sobering end — and one that, for now, seems more courtroom drama than rock revival.

RTM sign language interpreter Tan Lee Bee said the initiative not only provides visitors with an opportunity to learn sign language, but also exposes them to the unique culture of the deaf community. 'The public can come and learn sign language. For anyone or broadcasting station with interest, they can start by taking a basic course, followed by training and interacting with the deaf community to better understand their communication culture. 'Over time, they will become more skilled and have the potential to become sign language interpreters like me,' she said when met at Sunway Putra Mall here yesterday, Bernama reported. Lee said mastering sign language is not just about memorising hand gestures, but rather requires a deep understanding of the facial expressions, body language and communication culture of the deaf, which differs from the general public. 'To be a good interpreter, one has to be close and familiar with the deaf community. From there, we can understand how they communicate more accurately and convey the true meaning through signs. 'Maybe one day, we can broadcast news delivered by deaf individuals themselves using sign language. Who knows, the time will come for TV stations to feature news presenters from this community,' she said. The Hawana 2025 Carnival, taking place for three days since Friday, is part of this year's National Journalists Day (Hawana) celebration, which was held at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre. The Hawana 2025 celebration, organised by the Communications Ministry with Bernama as the implementing agency, aims to recognise the role and contribution of media practitioners in the country's development.
