Tabung Kasih@HAWANA inspires seniman to set up artistes welfare fund
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Artistes Association (Seniman) views the success of Tabung Kasih@HAWANA as a model worth emulating to safeguard the welfare of local artistes and arts industry practitioners.
Its president, Rozaidi Abdul Jamil, better known as Zed Zaidi, said the HAWANA fund is an inclusive initiative that can provide ongoing benefits to media practitioners.
'The successful establishment of a fund to look after the welfare of media practitioners has inspired Seniman to create a similar fund for local artistes.
'At the moment, we do not yet have a welfare fund, but under the Malaysia Film Association Coalition (Gafema), we are planning to establish a special fund similar to Tabung Kasih@HAWANA to protect the welfare of those in the arts industry,' he said when met at the HAWANA 2025 Carnival at Sunway Putra Mall here today.
Zed Zaidi also sees potential collaboration between Seniman and the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) platform through MyCheck Malaysia (Bernama's fact-checking unit) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to educate artistes on efforts to combat false information.
'This is my first time hearing about MyCheck Malaysia. It has the potential to become one of the platforms for special programmes with celebrities as agents to create awareness for the public,' he said.
He said apart from celebrities, Seniman also comprises influencers who often lack clear guidelines for information sharing.
'Sometimes when they share something, it may be based on facts but gets distorted until it turns into falsehood, which the public may then perceive as fact. This contributes to the spread of fake news and misinformation.
'Therefore, we can combine suitable programmes, including workshops or awareness sessions involving the media to educate the public about the importance of fact-checking,' he said.
The HAWANA 2025 Carnival runs for three days starting today and is part of this year's HAWANA celebration, themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics'.
The highlight of HAWANA 2025 will be the official launch by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.
Over 1,000 media practitioners, representatives from local journalist associations and media organisations from ASEAN member states have been invited, bringing together media professionals and industry experts to exchange ideas and foster strategic partnerships.

Bernama showcases over four decades of historic images at HAWANA 2025 Carnival
KUALA LUMPUR: More than four decades of Malaysia's rich history, captured through the nostalgic lens of Bernama photojournalists, are being brought to life at the Bernama Images booth during the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025 Carnival at Sunway Putra Mall. Bernama Photo marketing officer Fatiha Ghazali said the booth has drawn strong interest from visitors, many of whom were intrigued by the historic photographs and eager to learn the stories behind them. 'The images displayed here are part of the news photo archive uploaded to the Bernama Images platform, spanning from the 1980s to the present day,' she said when met at the carnival. Fatiha said Bernama has undertaken a digitisation initiative to scan and preserve older images taken before the digital era, ensuring they remain accessible. 'In addition to our photo archive, we aim to make the most of our resources by producing publications. Since we have both the images and accompanying information, we're able to create complete and meaningful products,' she added. Among the publications are special pictorial collections commemorating official state events and visits by foreign dignitaries, published in collaboration with the Prime Minister's Office and Istana Negara. Bernama Radio producer Nor Hayati Yaakub said the Mini Konti Bernama booth was designed to enhance public engagement, particularly with those interested in journalism and in understanding how news is broadcast. 'We have invited guests and sponsors to share their insights and latest updates through live segments at the booth,' she said. Meanwhile, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) marketing officer Mohd Hizaimi Senin said that DBP is showcasing works by National Laureates, as well as a timeless collection featuring 28 titles by recipients of the SEA Write Award, launched during the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2025. He said the featured literary figures include Lim Swee Tin, Suhaimi Muhammad and Othman Puteh, names that continue to resonate with literary enthusiasts. He added that DBP also showcased a wide range of genres, including children's novels, dictionaries, and magazines to ensure the exhibition offers something for all segments of society. 'One of the bestsellers was The Myth of the Lazy Native by Syed Hussein Alatas, which recorded sales of around 500 copies during the book fair. 'Also introduced was the Penghayatan Hadis 40 children's book series, comprising 10 titles aimed at instilling noble values in young readers based on the sayings of Prophet Muhammad,' said Mohd Hizaimi. TV3 crowned champion of Hawana-DBP Pantun Festival 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: TV3's Islamic Content Department emerged as the champion of the inaugural Hawana–Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) Pantun Festival 2025, defeating the Astro Radio News team in the final of the Malay quatrain competition, held in conjunction with this year's National Journalists' Day (Hawana) celebration. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim presented prizes to the champion and runner-up at the Hawana 2025 celebration held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) today. TV3's Islamic Content Department took home RM3,000, a trophy and a certificate of participation, while Astro Radio News received RM2,000, a trophy and a certificate. Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) placed third and fourth, respectively, in the competition, which saw the participation of eight teams. A total of 32 participants took part in the inaugural event at Wisma Bernama, held as a curtain-raiser to the Hawana 2025 celebration that began on May 31. TV3's Islamic Content Department team head Ahmad Fedtri Yahya described the win as highly meaningful, following two weeks of anxious waiting for the results. "I couldn't sleep well, especially last night. It has been a while since I last competed, so I was still really nervous. "Honestly, I was a bit scared because people had such high hopes when they heard I would be competing. "But Alhamdulillah, we managed to become champions. I'm really grateful for that," said the television personality and pantun activist. He expressed hope that such competitions would continue to be held in future. "I really hope this tradition continues. Even when I'm old, I'll still come, if not as a judge, then as someone in the crowd. Pantun is close to my heart and I fully support the continuation of this competition," he said. Hawana 2025 is organised by the Ministry of Communications, in collaboration with the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) as the implementing agency, with support from various media organisations and strategic industry partners. Carrying the theme "Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics", the event drew the participation of approximately 1,000 local and international media practitioners. In addition to the pantun festival, various events were organised in conjunction with the Hawana 2025 celebration – the fifth edition since its inception in 2018. The Hawana 2025 Carnival, being held at Sunway Putra Mall from June 13 to 15, features 20 exhibition booths involving major media agencies, government departments and private companies, such as Bernama, RTM, Astro, Media Prima Behd, the Department of Information (JaPen), and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). The Hawana 2025 Forum, jointly organised by Bernama and the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI), was held this morning at the Tun Hussein Onn Hall, WTCKL, discussing the topic "Malaysian Media Council: Regulator or Media Protector?", followed by a technology-sharing session titled "AI & Media: Tool, Threat or Opportunity?". Hawana 2025 also received sponsorship and contributions from nearly 100 strategic partners.
