Times of Oman29-01-2025

Prayagraj: On the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, more than 57.1 million devotees took a holy dip in the Triveni waters on Wednesday, said an official statement from Uttar Pradesh Information Department.
The ongoing religious event has witnessed an overwhelming show of faith, with millions gathering at the Triveni Sangam to mark this auspicious day of spiritual cleansing and devotion.
The number of Kalpwasis, who observe month-long spiritual austerities, exceeded 1 million, adding to the spiritual fervor.
The total footfall for the ongoing Magh Mela has now surpassed 199.4 million, even as a stampede-like situation briefly occurred due to the overwhelming rush at key bathing ghats.
Earlier in the day, Members of Akhara's gathered in small numbers at Triveni Sangam to take an 'Amrit Snan' on the occasion of 'Mauni Amavasya.
Digambar Naga Baba Chidanand Puri of Panchayati Niranjani Akhara speaking to ANI after taking 'Amrit snan' said that after today's stampede-like situation in Maha Kumbh people from Niranjani Akhara are coming in small numbers to take a holy dip.
"Due to an unexpected event today, our (Akharas) shobha yatra could not be taken out. We are now coming to take a holy dip in small numbers," Digambar Naga Baba said.
This comes after a stampede-like situation arose at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj in the early hours of Wednesday, resulting in several injuries. This incident occurred as millions of devotees gathered at the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers to take a holy dip on the auspicious occasion of Mauni Amavasya, which is also the day of the Second Shahi Snan.
Following the incident, heavy security has been deployed at the Triveni Sangam as police pave the way for Akharas and saints for their Amrit Snan on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya.
According to the Uttar Pradesh government, 36.1 million devotees had taken the holy dip at Triveni by 10 AM on Wednesday. Other key bathing dates during the Mahakumbh include February 3 (Basant Panchami), February 12 (Maghi Purnima), and February 26 (Maha Shivaratri).

Coffee table book captures impact of infra projects in Maharashtra under Fadnavis

The Indian Express Group unveiled a special coffee table book capturing the scale, vision and impact of various mega infrastructure projects initiated or completed under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis during his tenure as CM and Deputy CM (since 2014). Titled Mumbai Rising, the book outlines developments that have transformed connectivity, urban transport, public infrastructure and urban housing projects in Mumbai over the past decade. The 88-page book provides a look into transformative years of the state's infrastructure development — when the state received unprecedented investment after by implementation in sectors such as transport, highway, housing, urban transit and logistics. The projects cut across Fadnavis' stints as Chief Minister between 2014 and 2019, as Dy Chief Minister between June 2022 and November 2024 and then as Chief Minister from December 2024. From the recently fully-opened 701-km Samruddhi Mahamarg, which brings Nagpur and Mumbai closer by around 9 hours (from travel time of 17 hours), to the expanding Mumbai Metro network, the book documents projects undertaken by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) and Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) and others. Some key projects featured include the coastal road, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) also known as Atal Setu, the completed and future corridors of Mumbai Metro, the Thane Creek Bridge 3 and one of the the most-awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA); each signifying a direction towards integrated, sustainable and future-ready urban growth. It also includes a section on urban infrastructure in the metropolitan region and road connectivity, covering the improvement of internal roads, expressway extensions, rural bridges and access corridors in Marathwada, Vidarbha and Konkan region. The book traces how infrastructure has been used as a tool of equitable development, bringing connectivity to regions that had long remained on the drawing board. The book is a visual documentation and a narrative of policy decisions and administrative reforms too. It also highlights how these infrastructure efforts were possible due to the synergy between Centre and the state. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Centre, Maharashtra under Fadnavis' leadership was able to pursue its infrastructure ambitions aggressively. 'Mumbai Rising is a tribute to this undying spirit-a curated chronicle of how a city, always in motion, is reimagining itself for the future. In recent years, Mumbai has witnessed a transformative leap across the pillars that define a modern metropolis. The sweeping advances in urban infrastructure, transport, mobility and housing, and the thoughtful establishment of monuments and cultural symbols, convey an overwhelming message-one of vision, growth, and outstanding implementation,' an excerpt from the book's foreword states. With the coffee table book, The Indian Express aims to inform, inspire and preserve the state infrastructure achievement of over a decade — a resource for both today's and future readers to look back at one of Maharashtra's most transformative phases in urban development.

(AP Photo/Rebecca Blackwell) MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Entering his sixth season, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is still trying to show he can stay healthy on a consistent basis. Tagovailoa missed six games last season because of two separate injuries and Miami finished 8-9, missing the postseason after playoff appearances the previous two years. Advertisement Tagovailoa talked about his injury history as he addressed reporters following the Dolphins' first day of minicamp at the club's practice facility Tuesday. 'Doing everything I can to stay available for the guys,' Tagovailoa said. 'Like I said before in the past, nothing changes with that.' However for Tagovailoa and the Dolphins, staying healthy has proved challenging since the club drafted him as the fifth overall selection in 2020. With the exception of his standout season in 2023, Tagovailoa has dealt with multiple injuries, including concussions. The most recent concussion — in a Week 2 home loss against the Buffalo Bills — sidelined him for four games last season. Tagovailoa scrambled for yardage then collided head-first with Bills safety Damar Hamlin. Advertisement 'I would say the longevity for me to be on the field with my guys is more important than whatever that one play is,' Tagovailoa said. 'You have more quarters than there would be with just that one play. 'I show the guys that I'm competitive and I know they know that. It's just a nature thing. It comes natural to me to compete in that sense. And that's the thing I fight with.' The Dolphins were 1-3 during Tagovailoa's absence with backups Skylar Thompson and Tyler Huntley. A hip injury also forced Tagovailoa to sit the final two games of the season. With Tagovailoa's long-term health remaining an issue, the Dolphins signed Zach Wilson to a one-year deal in the offseason. Wilson, the No. 2 overall selection in the 2021 draft, is attempting to jump-start his career after three unsuccessful seasons with the New York Jets and one year while backing up Bo Nix in Denver. Advertisement The quarterback depth chart also includes rookie Quinn Ewers, whom the Dolphins drafted in the seventh round following a standout college career. 'I think it's really working out for Zach,' Tagovailoa said. 'For certain practices, you guys aren't allowed to see the development he's made and the strides that he's made as a player. I would say the same for Quinn as well.' The Dolphins have plenty invested in Tagovailoa, who was injury-free in 2023 when he threw 29 touchdowns and for a league-high 4,624 yards. The Dolphins gave him a four-year, $212 million contract extension. Three-time All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith didn't participate Tuesday. Ramsey reportedly has requested a trade, while Smith, who caught a team-high 88 passes last season, is seeking to restructure his contract. ___ AP NFL:

Credit rating agency says Manitoba's recent tax changes outweigh affordability offers

The Manitoba government is expected to use more 'revenue levers,' similar to its recent income and property tax changes, as part of its plan to reduce the deficit, a credit-rating agency report says. S&P Global Ratings has affirmed the Manitoba government's existing short-term and long-term credit ratings and says the outlook for the province is stable, based in part on expected revenue changes and spending control. 'The stable outlook reflects our expectation that, despite economic growth and trade uncertainty, Manitoba will deploy revenue levers and expenditure management to generate stronger fiscal outcomes in the next two years,' the report, issued May 26, said. The NDP government, elected in 2023, has promised to reduce costs for Manitobans. It has taken out advertising to promote its cut to the provincial fuel tax, an increase to a tax credit for renters and other measures. Story continues below advertisement But the money forgone by the province for those measures is outweighed by recent tax changes that are boosting provincial revenues, a director with S&P said. That includes a change in this year's budget that will no longer see income tax brackets automatically rise in line with inflation. The NDP government has promised to balance the budget before the next election, slated for 2027. That would end a string of annual deficits that stretches back almost continuously to 2009, with the exception of two surpluses. Part of the province's revenue growth has come from recent changes that will see many property owners and income-earners pay more. In last year's budget, the government changed the way education tax credits on property are calculated. The government estimated the change would net the province an extra $148 million a year, although that number is likely to grow due to recent increases in property assessments and taxes levied by school divisions. In this year's budget, the government stopped indexing income tax brackets and the basic personal exemption to inflation. By keeping the brackets and exemption constant as wages increase, unlike most provinces, the government is forecasting an extra $82 million in revenue. Story continues below advertisement Finance Minister Adrien Sala said he's not looking at future tax changes aimed at garnering more money, and is expecting an economic boost to increase revenue. 'I think the biggest driver of new revenues will be economic growth,' he said in an interview. He pointed to the recent start of construction of the Alamos gold mine near Lynn Lake as an example. The government is also looking at keeping annual spending growth in check in order to balance the budget, he said.
