Man dies after inflatable kayak capsizes in Arkansas River
DENVER (KDVR) — A 35-year-old man died after his kayak capsized and he became unconscious in the Arkansas River near Buena Vista on Friday afternoon.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife said a call came in to Chaffee County dispatch around 3:15 p.m. after two private boaters in inflatable kayaks capsized their crafts.
One kayaker was reportedly able to swim to shore, while the other was unconscious after his kayak capsized. CPW said a bystander in another kayak followed the unconscious man and pulled him to shore above Johnson's Village, where they began CPR and called 911.

Rangers from the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area, Chaffee County EMS, Chaffee County Fire, the Chaffee County Sheriff's Office and CPW arrived on scene, but despite lifesaving efforts, CPW said the resuscitation was unsuccessful and the man was pronounced dead by the Chaffee County Coroner.
'Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim,' said Tom Waters, the recreation area park manager. 'This appears to be a tragic accident.'
Waters said both kayakers had appropriate safety equipment for this section of whitewater, including dry suits, personal flotation devices and helmets.
The water was 52 degrees, and the river was running at 1,780 cubic feet per second. Waters said people should check conditions by calling the recreation area office before entering the river, or consider using a commercial rafting company if they're unfamiliar with the area or conditions.

Community members gathered June 7 at Colorado State University to advocate for safer roads in honor of people who died due to distracted driving — including 10-year-old Oliver Stratton of Timnath. Ollie's Ride for Change was held at the Lagoon at CSU to honor Stratton's life and all those who have died in crashes caused by distracted driving. Stratton was hit and killed while riding his bike in his Timnath neighborhood in August 2023. The driver in the crash was sentenced to one year in jail earlier this year after a jury found her guilty of careless driving. The driver had been using her phone in the seconds leading up to the crash. The June 7 event — hosted by the nonprofit formed by Stratton's family called Ollie's Bike Parade — is the second annual event of its kind to raise awareness in Stratton's honor. Last year's bike parade drew hundreds of community members to Timnath Community Park for bicycle decorating, a family-friendly bike parade, activity tents, food trucks and more. This year's event, now organized in collaboration with Colorado State University, included much of the same, according to a news release prior to the event. The Pokemon-themed family-friendly bike parade began at 10 a.m., with free bicycle decorating kits available ahead of the parade. A road safety expo, bike decorating contest, memorial and advocacy tent with a ghost bike graveyard representing bicyclists who died since 2023, food trucks, face painting and other activities were also planned. The day's activities were meant to be about more than just the event, but to be the continuation of a movement to demand safer roads, higher penalties for distracted driving and honor lives lost in distracted driving crashes, according to the news release. "This is about ensuring no more families are shattered by preventable tragedies," Stratton's mother, Clarissa Stratton, said in the news release. "We need real change, and it starts here." Utility terrain vehicle overturns in Union County, leaving 1 dead
One person is dead after a utility terrain vehicle crashed in Union County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. At around 1:06 a.m. Saturday, a 2023 Kawasaki utility terrain vehicle, or UTV, was traveling east on Neal Shoals Road, and overturned when it attempted to turn left onto Happy Valley Road in Union County, a highway patrol news release said. Two people were in the vehicle and injured in the crash, and both were taken to an area hospital. One person later died, the news release said. The identity of the person killed has not yet been released by the Union County Coroner's Office. The collision remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

14 years later: Police still looking for answers in murder of 22-year-old man
DENVER (KDVR) — Detectives are still investigating an unsolved cold case into the murder of Terrell Ephriam, who would've turned 33 years old on Saturday. The Aurora Police Department said Ephriam was known to walk around the neighborhood visiting friends and neighbors, but when he left the house at about 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014, he never came back. The department said on Feb. 26, 2014, it responded to a call of a reported stabbing on the Wheeling Street pedestrian bridge near 28th Avenue, where they found a man with multiple life-threatening injuries. He was identified by the Adams County Coroner's Office as a 22-year-old Aurora resident, Terrell Ephriam. Now, over 10 years later, the case still hasn't been solved. The investigation found that Ephriam left his house about 20 minutes before the 911 call, but after the Aurora Police Department Major Crime Homicide Unit detectives conducted an 'exhaustive investigation,' no suspect was identified. The department said detectives are still 'committed to the investigation' and are looking for the public's help with any information about the case. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with any information is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at (7867).
