Turner prints on show in Manchester for first time in 100 years
Ms Holmes-Roe said the works were being displayed together, as Turner intended. The exhibition was "exploring his genius as both painter and a master of printmaking", a medium he pursued at a time when printmaking was regarded as secondary to painting, she said.
"Turner's prints are not just technical feats, they are emotional experiences," Ms Holmes-Roe said."With each engraving, Turner reimagined landscape - not just as a subject but as a language, using the print medium to evoke mood, atmosphere and scale."This exhibition is a celebration of that vision, offering a fresh, immersive look at a body of work that has too often been overshadowed by Turner's oils and watercolours."
The prints have also been paired with some of Turner's famous watercolours and rarely seen paintings. One oil work has been in the Whitworth's collection since 1922, but was only authenticated as a Turner in 2016, Ms Holmes-Roe said."It is very special to the Whitworth," she added."Very few people will have had access to it before now."Turner: In Light and Shade is on view at the Whitworth until 2 November.

Kerry Katona defends Eamonn Holmes after he uses racial slur during live GB News chat
Kerry Katona has defended Eamonn Holmes after he used a racial slur about her while discussing plastic surgery on GB News. Holmes had to backtrack after the incident on his breakfast show on Thursday morning, when he asked the former Atomic Kitten singer if she was 'happy with her eyes' following cosmetic surgery. During a segment with the former Atomic Kitten singer, he asked her if she was 'happy with her eyes' following cosmetic surgery. Replying to his question, Katona said: 'I had them done over a year ago now. You know … it was making my eyes feel a bit heavy so I had an uplift.' The 65-year-old then interrupted her, asking: 'And you don't look oriental or anything, do you?' Later in the show, Holmes addressed the issue again, saying: 'Apparently you are not allowed to describe someone as looking oriental. I don't know how I would end up describing Kerry Katona if her eyes change shape. "I don't know how I'm going to say 'does she look like someone from some other country in the eastern of the world'. "The world is ridiculous about how you have to apologise for people. If she painted herself or, I don't know... I can't get into this. But anyway.' GB News co-host Ellie Costello then cut in to add 'But Kerry looks beautiful' before the Northern Irishman replied: 'Kerry looks well and I am sorry if you don't look well or we have offended you in any way.' Responding afterwards on social media, Katona said she was 'not offended' by his question. 'Eamonn Holmes has been one of my longest and oldest friends. I absolutely adore and love him to bits,' she said on her Instagram story. "He said absolutely nothing untoward. I wasn't offended. I absolutely adore Eamonn, I truly adore him.' Holmes has hosted his own show on GB News since he joined the channel back in 2022. He previously presented This Morning alongside ex-wife Ruth Langsford before the pair were dropped from their Friday slot on the show and replaced by Dermot O'Leary and Alison Hammond. Back in 2021 during his time on This Morning, Holmes had to apologise after comparing the hair of TV personality Dr Zoe Williams to an alpaca. At the time the Belfast broadcaster and Langsford were talking to Dr Zoe Williams about her upcoming health segment on the ITV show when Holmes made the remark. The comment provoked criticism on social media, with some viewers even demanding his resignation. During the show, Williams, who appeared by video link, told the presenters that she would be discussing "how your health can be benefited from gardening and even alpacas," to which Holmes replied: "Your hair reminds me of an alpaca today." 'You just want to pet it, don't you? It's very alpaca-ish," he continued. The doctor laughed, before saying: 'Don't touch my hair" while pointing towards the camera. While Holmes was criticised over the incident, others jumped to his defence saying it was just his sense of humour. One user on social media posted: 'I saw it and was glad she laughed it off, not offensive at all. People go way over the top nowadays. I hate the fact we have to feel the need to apologise constantly because of offending people – bit of banter is great.'

The broadcaster was interviewing former Atomic Kitten singer Kerry Katona on GB News when he asked her if a recent procedure on her eyes had left her looking 'Oriental'. BBC period drama hailed 'masterpiece' as viewers brand it 'best series of all time'
This underrated BBC period drama starring Poldark star Aidan Turner has fans raving. A BBC period drama has been hailed as a "masterpiece" by fans, with many calling it "the best of all time" due to its immersive 19th century setting. The series, set in industrial London during the 1800s, tells the story of a group of struggling artists who eventually form the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The production not only explores their artist challenges and ambitions but also delves into their romantic lives in a gorgeous period setting. Desperate Romantics stars Aidan Turner - known for his role in Poldark - alongside Rafe Spall, Tom Hollander, and Mark Heap. The series ran for just one season in 2009 but has left a lasting impression on viewers who praise its captivating storytelling and rich historical detail, the Express reports. The official BBC synopsis reads: "Drama series set in 19th-century industrial London, following vagabond English artists the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The boys set out to find a muse to inspire their best work." The series follows the brotherhood as they are determined to shake up the art establishment, with the help of John Ruskin, an English philanthropist of the Victorian era, who helps them make it in the world. The six-episode programme is based on Franny Moyle's factual book, Desperate Romantics: The Private Lives of the Pre-Raphaelites. Fans have flocked to Reddit to share their enthusiasm, with one user writing: "Has anyone heard of or seen this series about the Pre-Raphaelites? It's quite literally becoming my favourite period piece of all time." Another user agreed, adding: "One of my favourites! For anyone who hasn't heard of it, probably good to mention that it's about a real-life group of artists, so if you're into art history definitely check it out." A third fan expressed: "I can't believe it's so unknown, I do believe the title of it does not lead one to assume the subject matter and does itself the deepest disservice." And somebody else confessed: "I haven't watched this in ages, but I was obsessed when it originally aired. Now I need to watch again!" The series has also received praise on IMDb, where one user reviewed the show, writing: "I must say I am hooked big time. I want my dramas hot, juicy and plot-/character-driven. My verdict is: hot, steamy and educational." Turner, who plays Dante Gabriel Rossetti in the series, is no stranger to period dramas, having starred in 43 episodes of Poldark as its titular character from 2015 to 2019. He also appeared in the 2015 adaptation of Agatha Christie novel And Then There Were None, playing Philip Lombard in the three-episode miniseries. Turner made his screen debut in The Tudors in 2007, portraying Bedoli alongside Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Henry Cavill. His extensive experience in historical dramas brings both depth and authenticity to Desperate Romantics, making it a must-watch for fans of period dramas.
