KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 (Bernama) -- The Export-Import Bank of Malaysia Bhd (EXIM Bank) will focus on strengthening Central Asian ties through strategic engagements to benefit Malaysian businesses and regional partners.
In a statement today, it said the initiative includes exploring structured financing solutions for key partners in Uzbekistan, notably a proposed collaboration with Joint-Stock Commercial Bank HamkorBank to support Malaysian companies operating in Uzbekistan and Uzbek importers of Malaysian goods.
Hence, the bank's participation in the third plenary session of the Foreign Investors Council (FIC) in Tashkent has reinforced its commitment to expanding Malaysia's global trade presence.

EXIM Bank chief business officer Faizah Mustapa said its participation at the high‑level forum signals the bank's strategic intent to support Malaysia's exporters through innovative trade-financing, while exploring joint ventures with Uzbek financial institutions.
"We applaud Uzbekistan's reforms to streamline banking regulations and enhance credit facilities for import‑export activities," she said.
EXIM Bank said its participation in the forum aligns with Malaysia's National Investment Policy 2030 (NIMP 2030) to expand investment beyond traditional markets and support the globalisation of Malaysian small and medium enterprises.
It also complements Uzbekistan's Vision 2030, which seeks to attract foreign direct investments, increase regulatory transparency, and advance public-private partnership projects in agriculture, manufacturing, infrastructure, and tourism.
"With 36 Malaysian companies operating in Uzbekistan, ties between the two countries continue to grow.
"This was further strengthened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's official visit to Uzbekistan in May 2024, followed by a return visit to Malaysia by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in February 2025, reaffirming their commitment to elevate bilateral relations to a strategic partnership," it said.

Anwar: More goods exempted under SST compared with GST

KUALA LUMPUR: More goods are exempted under the Sales and Service Tax (SST) compared with the Goods and Services Tax (GST), which was abolished in 2018, says Finance Minister and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said following the review of rates and the expansion of the SST scope, 1,826 items were exempted under SST, compared with just 607 items previously exempted under GST. "The exemptions cover a wide range of basic necessities and commonly used items, including unprocessed or raw food such as chicken, beef, mutton, fish, vegetables, local fruits and rice. Processed foods such as flour, sugar, salt, white bread, milk and palm cooking oil are also exempted. "This also applies to medicines, medical devices and reading materials. In addition, SST exempts livestock and pet food, basic construction materials, fertilisers, pesticides, as well as agricultural and livestock machinery," he said in a parliamentary written reply. He was responding to Yuneswaran Ramaraj (PH–Segamat), who asked about the number of goods exempted under SST in 2025 compared with GST, as well as the categories of exempted goods. Anwar said service tax was imposed on 70 per cent of services in the economy, compared to 76 per cent under GST, based on the Malaysia Standard Industrial Classification (MSIC) Codes. He added that a range of essential services remain exempt. These include passenger transport by land and sea such as school buses, express buses, LRT, trains and ferries as well as air passenger transport under Rural Air Services in Sabah and Sarawak. Prepaid telecommunications services are also exempt. Other services not subject to tax include food and beverage delivery, residential rental, residential cleaning and maintenance, water supply, electricity supply of up to 600 kWh for residential use, and electricity supply to business premises. "The government remains committed and cautious in implementing the expansion of SST. Its implementation is targeted and progressive, taking into account the impact on the cost of living. "More practical and comprehensive measures have also been introduced to reduce the effects of double taxation and mitigate living costs, while supporting sustainable economic growth. "The greater number of exempted goods and the lower percentage of taxable services under SST, compared with GST, reflect the government's concern for the people's welfare, while ensuring stronger fiscal sustainability in line with the principles of the Madani Economic Framework," he said.

Ringgit opens flat against US$ on cautious sentiment

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened flat against the US dollar on Wednesday, amid cautious market sentiments ahead of the United States (US) Federal Reserve (Fed) chair, Jerome Powell's Jackson Hole speech this Friday. At 8 am, the local note stood at 4.2215/2420 from yesterday's close of 4.2215/2255. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the US Dollar Index (DXY) fluctuated from a low of 97.95 to a high of 98.29 points, with traders adopting a cautious stance ahead of Powell's speech. "Market participants are searching for clues on the Fed's stance on monetary policy and how it will shape their decision in the upcoming Federal Open Market Committee meeting on Sept 16-17. "Markets are pricing higher odds for a 25 basis points (bps) cut. As such, the two- and 10-year US Treasury yield slid by two bps and four bps to close at 3.75 per cent and 4.30 per cent, respectively," he told Bernama. The Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium will be held on Aug 21-23, with the theme of "Labour Markets in Transition: Demographics, Productivity and Macroeconomic Policy". Yesterday, the ringgit closed at RM4.2235, easing by 0.04 per cent versus the greenback. As such, Mohd Afzanizam expects the ringgit to maintain its trajectory between RM4.22 and RM4.23 today. The ringgit opened higher against a basket of major currencies, with the exception of the Japanese yen, where it eased to 2.8578/8718 from Tuesday's close of 2.8572/8601. It gained against the British pound to 5.6923/7199 from 5.7066/7120 yesterday and rose vis-à-vis the euro to 4.9147/9385 from 4.9307/9354 previously. At the same time, the local note traded mixed against other ASEAN currencies. It gained versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2844/3007 from 3.2901/2935 at Tuesday's close and strengthened against the Thai baht to 12.9498/13.0195 from 12.9848/13.0027 yesterday. The ringgit was flat vis-à-vis the Philippines' peso at 7.39/7.43 from yesterday's 7.39/7.40, as well as against the Indonesian rupiah, where it stood at 259.8/261.2 from 259.8/260.2 on Tuesday. - Bernama
