MLB investigates after wife of Giants' Sean Hjelle alleges ‘abuse' in TikTok video

The Guardian3 hours ago

San Francisco Giants manager Bob Melvin said club officials have talked to Major League Baseball about allegations of abuse made by the wife of pitcher Sean Hjelle.
MLB is investigating claims made by Caroline Hjelle, who on Friday posted a TikTok of herself with the couple's two children. It included the caption: 'When my MLB husband abandons us on Mothers Day a week after [this video was taken] once I finally found out about his affairs and stopped putting up with his abuse, so I've been raising two boys alone.'
She added hashtags that included #divorce and #cheating.
'Obviously, we're aware of it. He told me about it last night,' Melvin told reporters on Saturday. 'We've talked to MLB, and at this point, it's in their jurisdiction so we can't comment on it any further.'
MLB investigates such cases as part of its Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy.
Hjelle said after San Francisco's 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday that he and his wife are in the process of divorcing.
'I don't have an official comment right now,' Hjelle told reporters. 'I would like to actually talk with my agent, my lawyer. This has been something that's been going on for over a year now in terms of our relationship and our divorce and our separation and everything ... I just want to talk to the appropriate people and figure out what the steps are. Just kind of taking it in stride right now.
'So no comment right now. I feel confident saying that I will have one eventually. I don't have an exact timeline on that, but I would like to actually get with the people that are handling the situation with me and for me before I actually make an official statement.'
The 28-year-old is in his fourth season with the Giants. A right-handed reliever, he is 1-1 with a 4.66 ERA in six appearances. He remains eligible to pitch during the investigation.

Yildiz shines as Tudor's young Juventus side maintain momentum

PHILADELPHIA, June 22 (Reuters) - Juventus took a giant step closer to the Club World Cup round of 16 as they beat Wydad Casablanca 4-1 on Sunday thanks to an inspired performance by Kenan Yildiz. The 20-year-old Turkish forward scored twice and played a key role in an own goal, as Igor Tudor's young squad won a fourth consecutive game and extended their two-month unbeaten run to seven matches. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT: Tudor, who took over at Juventus in March following the dismissal of Thiago Motta, has overseen a remarkable turnaround at the Turin club who keep improving thanks to a core of young and talented players. KEY QUOTES: Juventus manager Tudor to DAZN: "It was a different game in terms of pace and timing (than the 5-0 win against Al Ain in their opener). We scored early on, but in football you always have to be careful in every situation, regardless of the result. (Yildiz) will decide how far he can go. He has important qualities at his disposal, he has pace and ideas, as well as a great mentality. Plus, he's a golden boy." Juventus forward Yildiz to DAZN: "They say it was a double, but I think it was a hat-trick. I was the one who kicked the first goal, it deflected but I think the first one was mine too. I hope they change that later. I'm happy with my numbers, but all this is thanks to the team and we want to keep going. I think the second one is my best goal I have scored so far in my career. I think so, when I saw that I could shoot, I thought from that moment I would score a nice goal."

Sophie Cunningham shows her love for Caitlin Clark with personalized arrival outfit... hours after slamming refs

Sophie Cunningham continued to back Caitlin Clark as she arrived for the Indiana Fever's clash against the Las Vegas Aces - this time with her outfit choices. The 28-year-old was thrust into the spotlight this week after she avenged her Fever teammate by tackling Connecticut Sun star Jacy Sheldon to the court on Tuesday night. Five days later, and the Fever are back in action in Sin City, where Cunningham proved yet again whose side she's on. The 6-foot-1 basketball star opted to give a nod to Clark following the contentious week of controversy, arriving at T-Mobile Area in a baggy white 'Tres Leches' t-shirt. The shirt, sold by Barstool Sports, is a nod to Cunningham, Clark and teammate Lexie Hull and the moniker their trio has earned. Cunningham arrived in Indiana during the offseason after being traded by the Phoenix Mercury and appeared to immediately bond with Clark and Hull, cementing their posse. Fans picked up on their friendship and began dubbing them the 'Tres Leches,' which means the Three Milks. Cunningham's outfit choice comes just hours after she hit out at the WNBA referees in an attempt to justify her actions during Tuesday's clash against the Sun. 'I'm not focused on the extracurricular activities,' Cunningham said at practice on Saturday. 'And you know what, during that, it was just part of the game. I think the refs had a lot to do with that. 'It was a buildup for a couple of years now of them just not protecting the star player of the WNBA. And so at the end of the day, I'm going to protect my teammates. That's what I do. And I'm a team player, so it's all good.' Fever coach Stephanie White echoed that sentiment, saying the refs lacked 'control' of the game and that 'we knew this was gonna happen' in the first quarter. Clark was prodded in the eye by Connecticut's Sheldon, who had previously been caught in a heated exchange with the Fever guard, before being slammed to the floor by Marina Mabrey in a violent moment that sparked outrage. Mabrey escaped with a mere technical, while Sheldon was handed a flagrant 1. But Cunningham wasn't letting it slide. With 46.1 seconds remaining in the game, Cunningham wrapped her arms around Sun guard Sheldon's head and pulled her to the ground in an act of revenge after her foul on Clark. Footage that emerged after the game showed that Cunningham also tried to get involved in the initial scuffle involving Clark. In the video, Cunningham - who was out of the game at the time - could be seen briefly trying to run towards the fracas before being intercepted by assistant coach Austin Kelly. Kelly then held onto Cunningham for several seconds before the incident died down. Cunningham received a fine from the league after the game, while Mabrey's technical foul (assessed for her shove on Clark) was also upgraded to a flagrant two foul, which came with a corresponding fine for such an infraction. The tension between Clark and Sheldon had been building from earlier in the game, as the pair found themselves in a feisty exchange, with the Fever star firing off a volatile message after Sheldon appeared to say: 'You can't do that.' 'I can do whatever the f*** I want to do,' Clark said to Sheldon before shoving her away. Mabrey also stepped in to give a little shove to Clark, though things didn't escalate further in that situation.

Tommy Fleetwood makes disappointing start at Travelers Championship

Tommy Fleetwood saw hopes of a maiden PGA Tour victory dented after a sluggish start to his final round at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut. The Englishman had opened up a three-shot lead following a flawless 63 on Saturday, sitting at 16-under par. Fleetwood, though, found the going tough when heading back out at TPC River Highlands looking to stay clear of the chasing pack – which included American Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley and Russell Henley. After starting with five before swiftly getting that shot back with a birdie, successive bogeys followed to see Fleetwood's advantage eaten away as Bradley had also made a three at the par-four second. Fleetwood, though, then got himself back clear at the top of the leaderboard after making a par five on the sixth, after which Bradley knocked in for a bogey to drop back to 13 under alongside Henley. The 34-year-old would be a popular winner, with Fleetwood having the most top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour since 1983 without claiming a title. World number one Scottie Scheffler looked to put his nightmare start to the fourth round behind him by soon climbing back up the leaderboard. Scheffler, who had been the overnight leader, made a triple bogey seven at the first hole on Saturday, when he was strangely out of sorts for most of the round, eventually finishing nine shots adrift of Fleetwood. The American, though, was soon back on the charge, this time making a solid birdie on the first and then picking up another with a two at the par-three eighth to head into the turn at two-under. Masters champion Rory McIlroy had started the final day tied for eighth, in a group which included Scheffler. The Northern Irishman picked up two birdies in the opening six holes, having dropped a shot at the par-four fourth. Australian Jason Day moved to within two shots back of the co-leaders following five straight pars after his birdie on the first. Viktor Hovland, meanwhile, withdrew during his final round, on the third hole, because of a neck injury, the PGA Tour confirmed.
