
Almost HALF of Brits are now on TikTok: Video app celebrates hitting 30 million UK users
It's the go-to platform for millions of people around the world, providing an endless stream of short yet addictive video clips.
And in Britain, more people are glued to TikTok than ever before.
In an official update, the Chinese-owned app revealed over 30 million people across the UK now use TikTok each month.
With around 68 million people in the UK, it means the social app's reach extends to nearly half the population, nearly seven years after it launched here.
The UK is TikTok's largest userbase in Europe, according to the social media app, which is owned by Chinese internet company ByteDance.
And despite the looming ban in the US, TikTok has brought global fame to a whole raft of 'influencers' who earn a living through the platform.
Adam Presser, director of TikTok UK and global head of operations and trust and safety, said the app has been the foundation for thriving small businesses, breakthrough music stars, 'viral historians' and more.
'I want to thank the more than 30 million people that make TikTok the vibrant and unique community it is today in the UK,' he said.
The new official figure is based on the average number of monthly active users in the UK accessing TikTok between January and March this year.
And at 30 million, TikTok's massive UK following represents about 2 per cent of the platform's global userbase.
TikTok has an estimated 1.6 billion users worldwide, according to DemandSage – making it the fifth most popular social media platform globally.
Facebook is the top social media platform worldwide with 3 billion users, followed by YouTube with 2.5 billion, WhatsApp (2 billion) and Instagram (2 billion).
Despite trailing behind its rivals, TikTok has still achieved good growth in such as short time, having launched in the UK not even seven years ago.
Social media consultant Rhea Freeman called 30 million 'a decent milestone' for TikTok UK, comparable to Facebook.
Mark Zuckerberg's social network reached 30 million UK users in early 2011 – six years after it launched here in early 2005 – but Freeman thinks Facebook was something of a pioneer.
'Facebook had to break new ground as people didn't really get social media when it launched; with TikTok, it was already a known concept,' she told MailOnline.

Globally, most of TikTok's global users (135.79 million) are in the US, despite the proposed nationwide ban under President Donald Trump.
Trump has long had concerns over the app's links to the Chinese government, which he believes could compromise the safety and privacy of US citizens.
TikTok is known in China as Douyin where it was launched in September 2016, before being made more widely available around the world in 2017 and the UK in August 2018.
It was originally positioned as an app for sharing choreographed dances to songs – adding to its popularity among children.
But it now features a huge range of different content, from fashion and heath advice to book reviews, recipes, tutorials and challenges, along with 'influencers' who are paid to flog certain products.
In 2024 the platform increasingly became a place for science communicators to share backyard chemistry lessons, tips for fossil collecting and more.
However, TikTok – which allows children as young as 13 to create an account – has been surrounded with controversies in its short history.
Children's charity Barnado's has warned of 'sophisticated groomers' who contact children using the TikTok's live comment functions and engage them in sexual behaviour. It also acts as a platform for dangerous trends to proliferate, such as the 'blackout challenge', linked to the deaths of at least 20 children.
But Presser said the platform invests 'significantly in safety' globally and will invest at least another $2 billion (£1.4 billion) in the year ahead to help keep TikTok safe.
According to Statista, 50 per cent of children in the UK use TikTok, making it the most popular social media app for youngsters.
TikTok also revealed it would be expanding its 'already significant presence in the UK with a new London office and additional jobs.
The new 135,000 sq ft office in Barbican, London, is set to open early next year – bringing its UK workforce to around 3,000.
'Whether through direct investment in jobs and innovation, or the wider economic contribution from millions of British businesses on TikTok, we're pleased to be increasing our investment and presence here in the UK, an important hub for TikTok,' Presser added.
'What underpins our continued growth is our deep commitment to safety and to creating an enjoyable and secure digital space to sustainably support creators, entrepreneurs and the wider economy.'

TikTok is a Chinese social media app where users can live stream, create short videos and music videos and Gifs with a host of functions.
TikTok's tagline is 'Make every second count'.
It was the most downloaded app in the US in 2018 and the world's fourth most downloaded app in 2018, ahead of Instagram and Snapchat.
TikTok is known in China as Douyin where it was launched in 2016 and then made more widely available around the world in 2017.
Douyin is still the version of the app used in China, available to download separately to TikTok.
The app was merged with popular music video lip-syncing app Musical.ly, also with headquarters in China.
Most children use the app to film themselves lip-syncing to chart hits.
It offers users a raft if colourful modification and editing tools including overlaying music, sound, animated stickers, filters and augmented reality (AR) for creating short videos.
The Beijing based social network has more than 1 billion active users and the company is now worth more than $100 billion (£730 million).

How would you like a ruthless cynic as an agony aunt? That's the question thrown up by this touring show from Katherine Ryan, which pairs 45 minutes of caustic standup with a second 45 of counselling to the crowd. You might protest that that adds up to less than an hour of new material in Battleaxe, plus a second act that's more improvised therapy session meets audience Q&A. But at least those three-quarters of an hour find Ryan on imperious form, dispensing tart put-downs of men in general and some men in particular. The Guardian's journalism is independent. This ice queen of comedy pose is one Ryan wears lightly now, after a few years where it sometimes felt restrictive and for show. Then came her 2022 show Missus, which diluted (or enriched) the persona to address the Canadian's then-recent out-of-the-blue marriage. Battleaxe is a retrenchment after that more expansive offering, with Ryan back in her high-status comfort zone, eye-rolling at her children's foibles, breaching PC protocols for LOLs, and wrinkling her nose at the weaker sex. 'If dildos could bleed a radiator, men would be obsolete.' There's a fine routine on the contrasting ways male and female bodies husband their reproductive material, and many a weary remark at the expense of 'im indoors. See this masterpiece of double-edgery: 'I love my current husband so much so far.' The Ryan we meet post-interval sits a little at odds to this act one badass, as she responds to problems volunteered by the crowd with even-handedness in place of cynical certainty. Fair enough: such is (in her own words) her duty of care, as she ministers to a man whose Lego habit his new wife refuses to tolerate, and a couple at odds about the appeal (or otherwise) of having a third child. But, in this touring show of two halves, the laughs in this crowdsourced comedy are milder than the short, sharp hit of concentrated Katherine that goes before. Touring until 28 June

Warning over 10% price hike trick when paying by card abroad this summer
Holidaymakers could see costs rise by 10 per cent this summer as 'dynamic currency conversion' (DCC) provides traders with tempting opportunities to profit from people paying with plastic. DCC, also known as 'cardholder preferred currency', has been around for many years. Hotels, restaurants and shops with significant numbers of tourists often provide the option to pay at a fixed conversion rate. The appeal to the traveller is that they will know instantly how much they have spent in sterling. But they are certain to lose out on the transaction. The practice looks harmless: simply an additional choice. When you ask to pay with plastic or a card stored on a mobile phone abroad, the terminal will often display two figures: the bill in euros (EUR) or other local currency, and a figure in pounds (GBP). Some holidaymakers may fondly assume that the sterling amount is the equivalent to the local currency at current exchange rates. In fact, the cost in pounds includes a margin of up to 10 per cent. This is pocketed by the bank, which passes some of the cash back to the merchant. Anyone who avails of dynamic currency conversion is voluntarily accepting a price increase that could add £1 to every £10 spent – a fast way to lose a slice of hard-earned cash. Many holidaymakers know, when asked abroad if they would like to pay a sterling amount rather than the local currency, always to say 'No'. When offering dynamic currency conversion, merchants are supposed to follow strict guidelines: But during the course of a journey through Europe this month, it has become clear that some traders are not playing fair. Once local currency has been selected, that should be the end of it. But some card machines are programmed to come up with another screen, typically reading: 'Do you accept that if you choose not to take advantage of the guaranteed exchange rate, you will be subject to whatever rate the card company uses?' Below it, there is a box marked 'Accept' and another, 'Reject'. Customers who are paying attention will select 'Accept' because they understand that their bank will just use the appropriate prevailing rate – and that it will be better than the DCC deal. But if 'Accept' is selected, it turns out to be applied to a different question, ie 'Do you accept the DCC rate of exchange?' The correct, counter-intuitive answer is 'Reject'. Some proprietors may not even let customers get this far. After a satisfying lunch of dumplings and tea at a restaurant on the Royal Route leading south from the Old Town of Warsaw, the waiter simply selected 'GBP' on the machine, adding 10 per cent to the cost of the meal. When challenged about this scam, he claimed the machine was faulty and that nothing could be done. For holidaymakers withdrawing cash abroad, ATMs generally offer dynamic currency conversion. It should also be declined. The profitability to the bank becomes clear by noting the GBP sum, selecting local currency and afterwards checking the account online to see the actual sum debited by the bank.

Rachel Reeves warned against ‘unacceptable' London snub in spending review
London Mayor Sadiq Khan is urging Rachel Reeves to increase funding for London in the upcoming spending review, particularly for transport projects and the Metropolitan Police. Sources close to Khan warn it would be "unacceptable" if London doesn't receive the necessary funds, accusing Reeves of potentially pursuing an "anti-London agenda" similar to previous Conservative governments. City Hall is concerned London may not receive any of the £113 billion unlocked for infrastructure spending, with key priorities including extending the Docklands Light Railway and the Bakerloo underground line.
