Delta makes major seat pricing change as airline ends 'fair' pricing practices

Daily Mail5 days ago
Delta Airlines is letting AI take the controls — for pricing, that is.
America's second-largest US airline by daily flights says it's expanding a pilot program that uses generative AI to help set fares.
So far, just 3 percent of tickets have been priced with help from the bots.
But executives say they're speeding up the program's runway, and expect computers will set 20 percent of all ticket prices by year's end.
'This is a full reengineering of how we price and how we will be pricing in the future,' Glen Hauenstein, the airline's president, said during a June 10 earnings call. 'We like it a lot, and we're continuing to roll it out.'
But consumer advocates are warning that the program could be 'predatory' for consumers and could spell the end of 'fair' pricing.
The AI fare model has a projected runway of 18 to 24 months before a full-scale launch.
If the tech lands smoothly, Delta says it could eventually hand over nearly all pricing decisions to its new digital co-pilot.
Hauenstein said the AI is still in a 'heavy testing phase,' and reiterated the company will not rush the program out to its customers if issues arise.
But, if successfully rolled out, the pricing model could represent a major departure from the traditional model used by the company for years.
Delta previously relied on fixed and fair pricing models, where customers in similar seats largely paid the same price.
Tickets were mostly determined by shared flight metrics like time, fuel prices, route, and demand.
Executives believe the new system will strike a smoother balance between customer budgets and airline profitability.
But it might also make passengers in the same aisle pay wildly different prices.
'It's all about giving people more choice, more pricing options, and more products and services in every cabin,' Hauenstein said.
But others are warning that this pricing model could be harmful for consumers.
Delta's new pricing model could completely change how it assigns prices per customer
Delta's CEO, Ed Bastian, said customers cut back on domestic economy seats amid economic uncertainty
The company said that arund three percent of its sale prices are influenced by AI - customers should expect a major uptick in AI use later this year
Arizona Democratic Senator Ruben Gallego called the practice 'predatory pricing,' adding, 'I won't let them get away with this.'
Airlines have long offered different prices for consumers, even for the same journey, based off factors including how far in advance they buy the ticket and whether they shop directly or with a comparison-shopping site. But AI is now supercharging changes to pricing models.
'AI isn't just optimizing business operations, but fundamentally rewriting the rules of commerce and consumer experience,' Matt Britton, author of Generation AI, told Fortune.
'For consumers, this means the era of "fair" pricing is over. The price you see is the price the algorithm thinks you'll accept, not a universal rate.'
Delta declined to comment on this article.
The AI announcement comes as Delta made some major news about its profits forecast.
In April, the company pulled its financial guidance, saying the American economy was going through too much turmoil to determine how much money the company would make.
At the time, Congress hadn't passed President Donald Trump's tax and spending bill, tariffs were still up in the air, and markets were balking at uncertainty.
Ed Bastian, the company's CEO, said consumer confidence 'certainly took a big dip in the early part of the year and then again in April, after the Liberation Day announcements were made.'
But now the company has reinstated its profit guidance after it beat Wall Street's expectations for the second quarter of the year.
Still, the company is facing some customer headwinds.
Delta said that domestic economy seat sales fell 5percent in the previous quarter.
It will cut some domestic flights from the schedule in August.

Dollar holds losses against yen after Trump announces Japan trade deal

TOKYO, July 23 (Reuters) - The dollar held losses against the yen on Wednesday after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a trade deal with Japan ahead of an impending tariff deadline. Trump said the agreement will result in Japan investing $550 billion into the United States and a tariff rate of 15% was set on U.S. imports from Japan. With an August 1 deadline looming before the imposition of sweeping import duties on trade partners, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Monday the administration is more concerned with the quality of trade agreements than the timing. Asked whether the deadline could be extended for countries engaged in productive talks with Washington, Bessent said Trump would make that decision. Uncertainty over the eventual state of tariffs globally has been a huge overhang for the foreign exchange market, leaving currencies trading in a tight range for the most part, even as stocks on Wall Street have scaled fresh highs. The dollar index was down 0.4% to 97.423. The greenback traded at 146.65 yen , little changed from the previous session when it slid 0.5%. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Japan would open to trade for U.S. cars, trucks, rice and certain agricultural products, among other items. Trump's announcement follows a meeting with Japan's top tariff negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, at the White House on Tuesday, according the Asahi newspaper. The euro stood at $1.1745 , down 0.1% so far in Asia. Sterling was little changed at $1.35285 . The Australian dollar fetched $0.65555 , flat in early trade. New Zealand's kiwi dollar traded at $0.6007 , up 0.07%. Also weighing on investors' minds were worries about Federal Reserve independence, given Trump has repeatedly railed against Chair Jerome Powell and urged him to resign because of the central bank's reluctance to cut interest rates. Bessent on Monday took a softer stance, saying there is no need for Powell to step down immediately, adding that he should see through the end of his term in May if he wants.

Mysterious A-list buyer snaps up $250 million of land to build 'billionaire bunker' near Trump in Florida

A secretive A-list figure has been quietly spending a staggering $250 million to assemble what appears to be the country's next ultra-exclusive 'billionaire bunker' - just a stone's throw from President Donald Trump 's Mar-a-Lago in South Florida. The identity of the deep-pocketed buyer remains officially under wraps, but the scale, location, and speed of the acquisitions have set off frenzied speculation and no shortage of rumors about who might be behind the massive land grab. According to an explosive a Wall Street Journal investigation, the anonymous buyer - possibly a tech titan, hedge fund magnate, or reclusive billionaire - has scooped up four adjacent properties north of Trump's estate on Palm Beach's ritzy North Ocean Boulevard. The purchases reportedly include two oceanfront parcels formerly owned by cosmetics heir William Lauder, together with two luxury homes across the street. Lauder originally listed the oceanfront lots for a jaw-dropping $200 million, and though the February deal never appeared in public records, sources say the final price came close. One of the properties spans 2.8 acres and offers 360 feet of pristine beach frontage - an amount practically unheard of in such a cramped area of real estate. In early June, the mystery mogul struck again this time paying $18 million in cash for a Mediterranean-style home across the street in an unsolicited offer. That home had last sold for just $4.15 million in 2018. Days later, the buyer snapped up the neighboring house for a dizzying $30 million - nearly six times its 2017 sale price. 'The prices paid… are significantly higher than their market values,' reported WSJ, quoting agents who say the strategy is to build privacy and control the block. The scale and secrecy of the acquisitions have drawn comparisons to hedge fund titan Ken Griffin, who famously spent over $400 million assembling a mega compound in Palm Beach over the past decade. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has similarly gobbled up more than $230 million in property across Indian Creek, often called 'Billionaire Bunker Island.' But this new development may eclipse even them. 'This kind of assemblage, it just signals bigger things for South Florida,' said Peggy Olin, CEO of OneWorld Properties to Fox News. 'We're going to continue seeing these types of high-net-worth individuals just continuing to make South Florida just extremely elite and a safe place for all of them to gather. It's the connectivity. 'Palm Beach, in general, is becoming one of the few places in the country where you find the billionaire bunker situation or billionaire's row, per se,' Olin told Fox. 'It's just a lot about the caché and the ultra-elite.' The inland properties were purchased through Delaware-based LLCs linked to Seattle attorney Greyson Blue, whose law firm K&L Gates has long-standing ties to Bill Gates's late father. Blue also previously worked at the Gates Foundation, fueling speculation that the famously private Microsoft co-founder could be behind the mystery deals. But a source close to the Gates Foundation quickly poured cold water on the stating 'Gates isn't the buyer of the Palm Beach properties.' Other names floated include former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, now the owner of the LA Clippers, and Charles Simonyi the software architect behind Microsoft Word and Excel - both of whom are known for operating below the radar despite their massive fortunes. Rock legend Jon Bon Jovi owns the property immediately adjacent to these parcels of land and the mystery mogul is said to have tried to buy Bon Jovi's estate off-market, but the singer wouldn't budge. Bon Jovi paid $43 million for the beachfront mansion in 2020 and according to insiders, is not interested in selling - even at a substantial profit. 'They want to remain as private as possible,' Olin said of the mystery buyer. 'They want to make sure that no one else is cramping their style… They want to do everything in private so they can get what they want at the end. 'Like him or Ken Griffin or Jeff Bezos, all of these guys are seeing South Florida as their future,' Olin said. 'To me, it is fantastic… not only in real estate, but all around.' Palm Beach agent Dana Koch of the Corcoran Group said similar noting how the 'two acres directly on the ocean with 360 feet of water frontage, along with the properties across the street, is extremely rare to find in Palm Beach.' 'After buying all of these properties at a mind-boggling number [the buyer] is protecting his investment and affording himself even more privacy,' Koch said. Mar-a-Lago is a private club and was first constructed in 1927, and was bought by Donald Trump in 1985 for $10 million, per The Palm Beach Post. Last year, the president claimed that the resort is worth around $1 billion - with the Trump International Golf Club just minutes away. He has often been seen visiting the sprawling property over the years, but has frequented less often after being elected as the 47th President of the United States last year in November. However, that has not stopped fans and visitors from traveling down to Palm Beach to get a glimpse of the resort - which is not open to the public. According to Bloomberg, those who want to become members at the exclusive resort need to pay an initiation fee of $1 million. Permanent residents in the Palm Beach area near Mar-a-Lago have been left 'aghast' by the amount of Trump supporters who have recently flooded the area. 'I think this town is a little bit aghast at itself,' Palm Beach native Celerie Kemble told The New York Times. Jon Bon Jovi was a public supporter of Kamala Harris and endorsed her last year during the presidential campaign. While promoting a song called The People's House on Instagram at the time, he also explained his endorsement to his followers. The star is known for starting the rock band Bon Jovi in 1983 - which has dropped hits such as Livin' On A Prayer, Blaze Of Glory and Bed Of Roses. The singer has been keeping busy and recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of the band's 2024 album Forever last month. Along with sharing behind-the-scenes of putting the LP together, he also added a message to his fans. '1 year ago we released FOREVER in celebration of our 40th anniversary as a band,' the performer penned.
