
A New ‘Fishheart' Project Is Combining Science, Community & Indigenous Art To Restore Life In The Baaka-Darling River
The rivers health has been suffering, with a number of harrowing mass fish deaths events taking place in recent years.
A new state-of-the-art tube fishway technology called the 'Fishheart' has been launched at Menindee Lakes, located on the Baaka-Darling River, New South Wales.
The technology – part of the NSW government's Restoring the Darling-Baaka program – will allow native fish to move past large barriers, such as dams, weirs and regulators, when they need to. It's hoped this will help the fish reproduce and survive, and reduce the risk of mass fish deaths in the Baaka.
At the same time, meaningful policy reform and implementation can't be achieved without input from First Nations communities. So how do we do this? One creative collaboration on the Fishheart project suggests art may have a big role to play.
Distressing images
Several deeply distressing mass fish death events have occurred in the river since 2018, with millions of native fish, including golden perch, silver perch and Murray cod, dying due to insufficient oxygen in the water.
These events are the outcome of compounding challenges in managing the Murray-Darling Basin, Australia's largest inland river system. The basin, which stretches from Southern Queensland to South Australia, is a water source for some three million people.
But the construction of infrastructure such as dams, weirs and regulators has profoundly disrupted the natural processes that once sustained healthy river systems. This disruption has been made worse by ineffective and conflict-ridden governance.
The Baaka is a source of life and wellbeing for numerous communities. It should be cared for with the same urgency and coordination as a critically ill patient. If too many doctors or nurses are involved without a clear shared treatment plan, the patient suffers. Likewise, when multiple agencies attempt to manage a sick river, the system can break down.
So how can better care be achieved? For Barkindji Elder David Doyle the answer lies in doing it together.
Seeking and listening to Aboriginal community
Aboriginal peoples have been explaining the importance of Australia's inland rivers for generations. The Aboriginal community at Menindee held protests about the health of the Baaka two years before the first mass fish deaths. Yet their voices and cultural knowledges have not reconfigured river policy.
A report by the NSW Office of the Chief Scientist and Engineer into the March 2023 mass fish deaths on the Lower Baaka identified the importance of including Aboriginal cultural knowledges in strategies for fish species regeneration and management.
However, according to Barkindji Ngnukuu elder Barbara Quayle, the community's experience of 'consultation' has been a tick-box activity. She says there is no trust that cultural knowledges or community perspectives will actually be listened to.
The power of the arts
Traditional cultural knowledges are often held and expressed through various artforms, from story, to dance, to gallery arts. Within rural and remote communities, the arts and art-making create conditions that can help people work together to address complex issues. In fact, there's a long history of the arts being used to address social conflict.
Can the Fishheart help prevent fish kills? We don't know. But the Barkindji community's artistic input in the project is enabling a more integrated approach to finding out.
Elders and community members have come together with regional arts organisation, The Cad Factory, and the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development's Fisheries branch, to design traditional knowledge-inspired art for the Fishheart pipes.

This art was painted onto the pipes by members of Barkindji community over the past month. Other community art, including collaborations with the local school, was also placed around the site.
Making the art gave everyone involved the time, space and tools to consider and discuss the project. We learned how the Fishheart technology is inspired by the human heart, with tubes resembling 'veins' and 'arteries' that can take fish in and 'pump' them over barriers through a siphon effect, letting them circulate throughout the river.
We discussed important details on how this technology works, which includes using artificial intelligence used to detect fish in the pipes and collect real-time data and photos of the migration. We also considered how we might further care for the river, by potentially allowing the removal of invasive species, or monitoring for diseases.
The project also provided fisheries managers with the opportunity to hear community concerns, such as whether the installation of fishways might be perceived in ways associated with colonisation, or eventually lead to fish removal from the waterways.
Most importantly, seeing the pipes visually transformed by Barkindji art connected the Fishheart to place and Country. The art provides a tangible expression of uninterrupted Barkindji custodianship for the river and the species that depend on it.
With art, there is hope for creating policy together – policy that might promote the health of the river as a whole, rather than treating the symptoms of the problem.

How AI-based simulation testing is revolutionising healthcare
Healthcare systems in Australia are responding to complex and continually changing factors. With 28% of Australians living in rural and remote areas, together with a sizeable ageing population, many communities face a serious shortage of doctors and nurses. At the same time, disparities in health outcomes between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (First Nations) people and non-Indigenous Australians are driving a 'health gap'. Many factors determine access to quality, affordable healthcare — not only in Australia, but around the world. According to the latest World Health Organisation (WHO) data, ''at least 50% of the world's population still lacks full coverage of essential health services''. Across Australia, the science, healthcare, and assessment industries are collectively looking at ways to tackle these issues and drive better healthcare outcomes for all. Last year, our national science agency — the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), launched research highlighting a new 'extraordinary era' of AI in healthcare. As CSIRO's research director, Dr David Hansen, emphasised: ''The use of AI in healthcare is unique because the accuracy of models could mean the difference between life or death, or ongoing health or illness.'' According to Pearson's 2024 Skills Outlook, ''AI is set to transform clinician capabilities, improve diagnostics, and help deliver personalised treatments.'' To fully realise this potential, effective assessment and qualification will be essential for ensuring competency and fostering trust between practitioners and patients. So how can AI be used to measure and verify a wide range of skills required for safe and effective patient care? Simulation-based assessments are commonly used to train healthcare professionals in their handling of real-world scenarios. Over the last decade, this method of assessment has evolved to evaluate technical skills across a wide variety of clinically related situations. Rather than a standalone tool, simulations are used alongside other tests of competence to ensure a healthcare professional is equipped to practise, and now — like many assessment tools — it's being reimagined by AI. It will be exciting to see how simulation-based assessment — enhanced by AI — will allow healthcare professionals to demonstrate practical, real-world skills in much more dynamic and adaptive environments than ever before. While traditional real-world simulations have their benefits, they're expensive and can be limited in their use. Setting up a physical environment takes time and money — often actors need to be recruited and trained to play patient roles. And even then, there are some scenarios that realistically cannot be recreated — like rare emergencies or situations involving cultural nuances. AI can bridge that gap by generating more personalised, complex, or repeatable scenarios more quickly. Advancements with this technology will only broaden the use of simulation-based training and assessment in healthcare. Not long ago, NVIDIA released the world's first humanoid robot foundation model — along with advanced simulation frameworks. What's fascinating is that these robots can learn far more from simulated environments than from real-world experiences. And the same principle applies to human learning, too. When it comes to preparing healthcare professionals for high-stakes, fast-paced environments, AI-enhanced simulation might just be the most powerful training and assessment tool we have. Think for a moment about all the types of people you encounter in a hospital — professionals with varying degrees of experience — perhaps with different perspectives and from different cultures. With AI simulations, highly skilled, advanced medical professionals — as well as less experienced medical students, can rehearse different types of scenarios multiple times to mitigate risk or stress test new techniques or treatments. Scenarios where AI-enhanced simulation-based assessments could drive more positive healthcare outcomes: Advancing emergency medicine: AI can adjust patient responses in real-time — such as escalating during a crisis and de-escalating based on treatment — or shifting symptoms based on candidate hesitation — mimicking the unpredictability of real clinical care. For example, could AI-enhanced simulation-based assessments better train a medical professional in resuscitation skills? — where seconds could be the difference between life and death? With the way technology is progressing, there's significant potential in helping specialists in A&E departments respond even quicker in a crisis. Improving GP consultations: While many doctors in Australia bulk bill their patients to ensure services are accessible to everyone, some argue that some doctors choose not to bulk bill at all, or minimise the time spent with each patient to maximise the Medicare rebate. In the run up to the Australian federal election, this became a hot topic, with the government pledging $8.5 billion investment to expand bulk billing initiatives. AI-simulated consultations have the potential to better prepare healthcare professionals for the critical role of general practice — often the gateway to early detection of health issues and follow-up care. Beyond evaluating clinical reasoning and decision-making, these simulations could also assess how effectively medical professionals use AI tools for consultations. This approach not only supports the development of more effective and efficient practitioners but also enhances patient outcomes by integrating technology into real-word scenarios without sacrificing standards of care. Developing soft skills like communication: Vital health worker roles now require a blend of compassionate patient interaction as well as the increasing use of advanced technologies. Quality patient interactions are based on technology and human-centric skills — and finding the perfect balance. For example, amidst a shortage of nurses, there's increasing demand for nursing assistants and registered nurses adept in soft as well as technical skills. AI-driven avatars can simulate different types of patients — individuals from a range of demographics or from underrepresented groups — evaluating how nursing candidates navigate difficult conversations, show empathy, and resolve problems. These AI-based simulators can also offer personalised feedback — adjusting the level of difficulty of simulated scenarios based on the learner's proficiency. And large language models can create realistic dialogue, such as a patient panicking in a crisis. The use of AI makes these examples of simulations more responsive to an individual's actions, offering a much richer assessment of their competency to handle complex challenges. By providing the professional with a more immersive experience in which to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and abilities, AI-enhanced simulations are set to play a vital role in training and evaluating professionals in new job functions (as seen with the nursing example) as well as more complex medical procedures (such as those carried out by a surgeon). While these simulations already exist in prototype form, the challenge within many healthcare settings will be how conveniently they can be developed, adjusted, and scaled — and at what cost? To be effective, AI-driven simulation-based assessments need to be targeted where they can have the most far-reaching impact. With rapid advances in technology, creating, and customising these simulations is likely to become much easier and more affordable in the near future. Simulation-based assessment, enhanced by AI, offers a powerful tool for training and evaluation — but like any other AI-assisted system, its output is only as good as the data it's built on. If that data contains any biases or misconceptions, then the AI will inevitably reflect and reinforce those same limitations. This is where the human touch (known as the "human-in-the-loop" model) will prove vital — particularly in clinical scenarios involving diverse patient populations. With health inequalities across different regions and different demographics, clinical simulation developers will need to be inclusive of all types of patients. And professional roles within this sector will still require a combination of technical expertise and essential human skills because they come with the highest stakes of all: people's lives. To enter 'an extraordinary era of AI', ensuring that any AI tools — including those used in simulation-based assessments — are fit-for-purpose, responsive to patient needs, and capable of tackling the most pressing health challenges will be fundamental.

What was once the domain of scientists and the uber rich is increasingly becoming a consumer product. Those pushing the idea, spearheaded by tech billionaire Bryan Johnson's ' Don't Die ' movement, believe death isn't inevitable, but is a solvable problem. The global longevity market – spanning gene therapies, anti-ageing drugs, diagnostics and wellness plans – is projected to hit US$610 billion this year. At its core, the marketing of these products feeds off the age-old fear of mortality and the desire to stay young. But while the marketing is reaching the masses, this is still very much a luxury product. Immortality is being sold as exclusive, aspirational and symbolic. It's not just about living longer – it's about signalling status, controlling biology and being your 'best future self'. Tapping into long-held fears What's known as ' terror management theory ' puts forward the idea that humans and other animals have an instinctive drive for self-preservation. But humans are not only self-aware, they are also able to anticipate future outcomes – including the inevitability of death. The messaging behind the push to extend life taps into this internal tension between knowledge of our own mortality and the self-preservation instinct. And to be fair, it is not a new phenomenon. Cryonics – the preservation of bodies and brains at extremely low temperatures with the hope medical advancements will allow for their revival at some point in the future – was first popularised in Robert Ettinger's 1962 book The Prospect of Immortality. Since then, the super-rich have invested in various companies promising to preserve their bodies for some unknown future date. It now costs US$200,000 to freeze your body, or $80,000 for just your brain. What's truly new is how death is being marketed – not as fate, but as a flaw. Longevity isn't just about living longer; it's about turning mortality into a design problem, something to delay, manage and eventually solve. 'Biohacking' sells the idea that with the right data, tools and discipline, you can upgrade your biology – and become your best, most future-proof self. This pitch targets high-income consumers aged 30 to 60, people already fluent in the language of optimisation – a mindset focused on maximising performance, productivity and longevity through data. The brands behind the living forever movement sell control, optimisation and elite identity. Ageing becomes a personal failure. Anti-ageing is self-discipline. Consumers are cast as CEOs of their own health – tracking sleep, fixing their gut and taking supplements. From biohacks to consumer branding There are now more than 700 companies working in the longevity market. Startups such as Elysium Health and Human Longevity Inc. offer DNA testing, supplements and personalised health plans. These aren't medical treatments – they're sold as tools to age 'smarter' or 'slower' and are pitched with the language of control over what once might have seemed uncontrollable. Don't Die's Bryan Johnson spends over US$2 million annually on his personal anti-ageing experiment. But the real pitch is to consumers: buy back time, one premium subscription at a time. Johnson's company Blueprint offers diagnostics, supplements and exercise routines bundled into monthly plans starting at $333 and climbing to over $1,600. Longevity products promise more than health. They promise time, control and even immortality. But the quest to live forever, or at least a lot longer, raises moral and ethical questions about who benefits, and what kind of world is being created. Without thoughtful oversight, these technologies risk becoming tools of exclusion, not progress. Because if time becomes a product, not everyone will get to check out at the same counter.
