Green barricades: Illegal mining roads blocked in Nuh with 7,500 saplings

Time of Indiaa day ago
Gurgaon: Two illegal roads in Nuh's Basai Meo village, where illegal mining is rampant, have been blocked by planting around 7,500 saplings by the authorities in 13 days. The two roads were carved out by the mining mafia to gain access to the ecologically sensitive Aravalis to carry out quarrying.
To permanently obstruct these entry points and restore the damaged area, the forest department converted them into green zones through rapid afforestation.
"We completed the plantation drive over a 15km stretch in the ridge area along the two illegal roads, which were paved for non-forest activities. The drive started on June 22 and concluded on Friday," said divisional forest officer (Nuh) Pradeep Gulia,. The objective is to develop a green patch on the 33-foot-wide illegal roads.
The forest department plans to employ drone surveillance for real-time monitoring to ensure the saplings' survival and prevent further encroachment. Officials asserted that the initiative is not only an ecological restoration effort but a strategic measure also to block access routes repeatedly exploited by mining operators despite curbs.

Basai Meo has been under scrutiny after revelations of illegal road construction and mining on forest and agricultural land, directly contravening the Supreme Court directives and environmental norms. A report by Central Empowered Committee (CEC) confirmed illegal construction of a 1.5km road, allegedly created to facilitate transportation for illegal stone mining.
The committee also highlighted inaction by the local panchayat about involvement of elected representatives.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) is investigating alleged collusion between officials of the land consolidation department and those associated with miners to permit construction on forest and agricultural land. Three govt officials have been arrested, and a reward of Rs 50,000 each has been announced for the absconding former sarpanch and two others.
The SC has prohibited mining in the protected Aravali region, which includes parts of Nuh, to conserve the fragile ecosystem and prevent further environmental degradation. The apex court banned mining within 5km of Delhi in 2002 and imposed a blanket ban on mining in south Haryana in 2009 after observing significant damage to the Aravalis. A 2018 report by the SC-appointed CEC noted that approximately 25% of the Aravali range was lost due to illegal mining in Rajasthan between 1967 and 1968.

'Don't see other risks, Sebi is upgrading surveillance': Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey

MUMBAI: Sebi chief Tuhin Kanta Pandey on Monday assured investors there were not many other risks in the market like the one seen recently in the event of market manipulation by US-based quant fund Jane Street. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Sebi chief also said that the Jane Street issue was more of a surveillance issue and that the regulator is in the process of upgrading now. The chairman of of the markets regulator was speaking to the media after inaugurating a new investor empowerment facility on the apps run by the two depositories, CDSL and NSDL. Late on Thursday Sebi through an enforcement order had temporarily banned Jane Street and three of its affiliates from the Indian market for manipulation in stocks and futures & options (F&O) markets. The regulator had also asked the entities to together disgorge nearly Rs 4,850 crore, alleged to be Jane Street's illegal gains. Asked if there were other similar funds that have manipulated the market, Sebi chief said he didn't think there were "very many other risks." Pandey said that what happened in the Jane Street matter was a surveillance issue, and the regulator was upgrading its surveillance systems. A day earlier, the markets regulator had said that along with Sebi, the two leading bourses were also in the process of upgrading their surveillance systems so that cases like Jane Street did not occur. He had also assured investors that Sebi will not tolerate any attempt at market manipulation. The Sebi chief also said that the action it took against Jane Street was within the confines of the regulatory powers. Pandey also said that was not the regulatory powers but better surveillance and enforcement systems which would act as deterrents against market manipulators.

‘Blackmailed into paying 2.5cr hush money', CA kills himself

Mumbai: A 32-year-old chartered accountant died by suicide at his Santacruz home on Saturday after allegedly being blackmailed into paying Rs 2.5 crore over months to two persons he befriended on Instagram last year who threatened to make his intimate videos with them public. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Vakola police on Monday lodged a case of abetment to suicide and extortion against the two suspects; they are yet to be arrested. The CA had earlier filed a complaint that the two had been threatening him. A police officer said the CA's mother found three suicide notes stating that he was forced to withdraw money from the family's savings as well as siphon off sums from his company's account to pay off the suspects. Vakola police are looking into the company's accounts for such withdrawals. The officer said a little after the CA went to sleep on Saturday, he called his mother, who found him throwing up. She sought help from the neighbours and rushed him to a hospital. Police learned from the mother that the CA had been depressed since the two suspects visited their home on June 7, and allegedly threatened to reveal his relationship with them and post intimate videos online. "They visited his home after he filed a complaint against them for repeatedly threatening him," the officer said. In her complaint, the mother said: "I gained my son's confidence and asked him to share the problem. He revealed that he befriended [the two suspects] in 2024 through social media. Since then, they had been extorting money from him, forcing him to transfer funds from his bank account." Of the three suicide notes, one was addressed to his mother and the second to his company. In the third note, he held the two suspects responsible for his death. To seek help in times of distress, reach out to Ankahee Foundation from 4pm-10pm on all days on 8655486966 or email hello@

HC grants bail to ITR espionage accused

Cuttack: In a development related to Chandipur espionage case, the Orissa high court granted bail to Basanta Kumar Behera, a contractual air conditioning operator at the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur, who had been in custody since Sept 2021 for allegedly spying for a Pakistani agent. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Behera was one of four DRDO contractual employees arrested in the sensational case that was initially investigated by the state police and later transferred to the State CID-Crime Branch. The case involved allegations of leaking sensitive missile testing information to a foreign handler. Justice Gourishankar Satapathy, while granting bail on July 1, underscored the importance of the constitutional right to a speedy trial under Article 21. The court observed, "If the state is unable to provide a speedy trial, it should not oppose the plea of bail merely on the ground that the crime committed is serious." The court noted that Behera had earlier availed interim bail on two occasions without violating any of the imposed conditions. Considering his prolonged incarceration, his compliant conduct during interim release, and the bail already granted to co-accused Sachin Kumar Chhata and Tapas Ranjan Nayak, the court found sufficient grounds to approve Behera's bail application. Advocate Ashutosh Mishra, appearing on Behera's behalf, confirmed that all necessary procedures are being expedited for his client's release. "As of now, Basanta Kumar Behera is in Balasore Jail. We are in the process of fulfilling the bail conditions, and he is expected to be released within a day or two," Mishra told TOI on Monday. Behera was granted bail on a personal bond of Rs 5 lakh with two solvent sureties. He has been directed to report to the local police station once every fortnight for the next six months, preferably on Sundays. Additionally, he must not leave the jurisdiction of the trial court without prior permission and is required to submit his current residential address, mobile number, and other relevant details to both the court and investigating agency. The trial, currently pending before the 3rd additional sessions judge in Balasore, has made little progress in the past nearly four years.
