Green barricades: Illegal mining roads blocked in Nuh with 7,500 saplings
To permanently obstruct these entry points and restore the damaged area, the forest department converted them into green zones through rapid afforestation.
"We completed the plantation drive over a 15km stretch in the ridge area along the two illegal roads, which were paved for non-forest activities. The drive started on June 22 and concluded on Friday," said divisional forest officer (Nuh) Pradeep Gulia,. The objective is to develop a green patch on the 33-foot-wide illegal roads.
The forest department plans to employ drone surveillance for real-time monitoring to ensure the saplings' survival and prevent further encroachment. Officials asserted that the initiative is not only an ecological restoration effort but a strategic measure also to block access routes repeatedly exploited by mining operators despite curbs.

Basai Meo has been under scrutiny after revelations of illegal road construction and mining on forest and agricultural land, directly contravening the Supreme Court directives and environmental norms. A report by Central Empowered Committee (CEC) confirmed illegal construction of a 1.5km road, allegedly created to facilitate transportation for illegal stone mining.
The committee also highlighted inaction by the local panchayat about involvement of elected representatives.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) is investigating alleged collusion between officials of the land consolidation department and those associated with miners to permit construction on forest and agricultural land. Three govt officials have been arrested, and a reward of Rs 50,000 each has been announced for the absconding former sarpanch and two others.
The SC has prohibited mining in the protected Aravali region, which includes parts of Nuh, to conserve the fragile ecosystem and prevent further environmental degradation. The apex court banned mining within 5km of Delhi in 2002 and imposed a blanket ban on mining in south Haryana in 2009 after observing significant damage to the Aravalis. A 2018 report by the SC-appointed CEC noted that approximately 25% of the Aravali range was lost due to illegal mining in Rajasthan between 1967 and 1968.

Corporal punishment gets Gujarat private tutor 6 months jail, Rs 1 lakh fine
Representative photo VADODARA: A private tuition teacher was sentenced to jail for six months and fined Rs 1 lakh for meting out corporal punishment to a 15-year-old Class 10 student, leaving the boy with severe ear injuries. A JMFC court in Vadodara passed the order Thursday. The teacher, Jasbirsinh Chauhan, ran a coaching centre. As per complaint filed by the student's father, Tejas Bhatt, Chauhan had been tutoring his son in English and Social Science. On Dec 23, 2019, the student attended class as usual. Later that evening, he called his father asking him to bring an exam form to the coaching centre. Upon reaching the coaching centre, the boy's parents allegedly heard someone being thrashed. Alarmed, Bhatt rushed into the classroom and found Chauhan slapping his son repeatedly on the face and ears. On being confronted, Chauhan began apologising and claimed he was punishing the boy for missing two days of classes, in which important topics had been covered. Later, the boy revealed that Chauhan had physically assaulted him on earlier occasions as well. Bhatt's relative contacted child helpline and a formal police complaint was filed. Medical examination confirmed that the boy had sustained severe injuries — his eardrums were badly torn and bleeding. Although Chauhan made multiple attempts to apologise to the family after the assault, police arrested him in Jan 2020. After prolonged legal proceedings, court convicted him & pronounced quantum of punishment.

Man applies for death certificate, gets birth certificate: Panel fines MCF clerk
Gurgaon: The Haryana Right to Service Commission this week imposed a fine on a municipal corporation of Faridabad (MCF) clerk for submitting a child's birth certificate instead of a resident's request to get his father's death certificate. According to the complaint, the Faridabad resident filed an application with MCF on March 22 this year to get the death certificate of his father, who died on March 19. Instead of the death certificate, the clerk posted at the NIT Zone II office uploaded a child's birth certificate and closed the application in April, the complaint read. A spokesperson said the commission's chief TC Gupta, a retired IAS officer, took serious note of this administrative lapse on Thursday and ordered MCF to deduct Rs 6,000 from the July salary of the clerk. Of this amount, Rs 3,000 will be paid as a fine under provisions of the Haryana Right to Service Act, 2014, and the remaining Rs 3,000 will be paid as compensation to the complainant. The applicant has been asked to send his bank account details to the commission and the municipal office, so the compensation amount can be transferred," the spokesperson said. In a separate case, the commission directed action against a tehsildar in Hansi city of Hisar for delaying his duty in issuing a marriage certificate. The spokesperson said that a Hisar resident applied for a marriage registration certificate on March 10. The wedding took place on Nov 28, 2024, and the application for a delayed certificate was submitted along with the consent of the couple's parents. The bride and groom submitted family IDs, confirming their age and address. After the application, the tehsil office raised an objection on the lack of a birth certificate. The official also demanded a hard copy of documents and additional paperwork. The commission said in its ruling on Thursday that Haryana govt guidelines state that family IDs are sufficient as proof of age and address.
