Farmers told to utilise purchase centres
Khanapur: Local Market Committee chairman Padigala Bhushan urged farmers to utilise the paddy purchase centres. On Monday, he inaugurated the paddy purchase centres set up under the auspices of IKP in Maskapur, Surjapur and Medam Pally villages of the mandal along with the leaders.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that farmers of nearby villages should utilise the purchase centers for the paddy they have grown in the Rabi crop and use the support price provided by the government. He advised IKP officials to take steps to ensure that farmers do not face any difficulties at the purchase centres.

North India's cotton sowing acreage is unlikely to improve in the new season despite a steep fall in the sowing area last year. Trade sources said that cotton acreage may recover by around 25–30 per cent in Punjab, but the area under cotton may further decrease in Haryana and Rajasthan due to a scarcity of water for irrigation. Market experts noted that the assured returns from wheat and paddy, owing to government procurement, have discouraged cotton farming in the north Indian states. Around 60–70 per cent of cotton sowing was completed by the end of May in north India, according to market sources. The sowing work is expected to finish in the next one or two weeks. There are indications that farmers in Haryana and Rajasthan are facing an acute water crisis for irrigation. Cotton sowing in north India mostly depends on canal water, but both states are not receiving adequate supplies to meet the growing demand. Cotton sowing in north India is expected to remain subdued in the 2025â€'26 season, despite a sharp acreage decline last year. While Punjab may see a slight recovery, Haryana and Rajasthan face further reductions due to water scarcity and shifting preference towards wheat and paddy, which offer assured procurement. Total acreage may fall below 10 lakh hectares. Sources said that cotton sowing area in Punjab may increase by nearly 30 per cent to reach 1.25 lakh hectares in the 2025–26 season. However, sowing may decline by 20–25 per cent in Haryana and 25–30 per cent in Rajasthan. All three states recorded a sharp fall in cotton acreage last year, dropping to 10.955 lakh hectares, according to official figures. There are indications that north India's total cotton sowing area may decline further and fall below 10 lakh hectares in the new season. Sources noted that farmers in these states are opting for the safer option of paddy cultivation during the Kharif season, as the government remains committed to procuring paddy and wheat (during the Rabi season) at the minimum support price. The current procurement policy has disillusioned farmers from growing cotton. Historical cotton sowing data also supports this trend. North India's cotton sowing area was 15.620 lakh hectares in 2023–24, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. It declined to 10.955 lakh hectares in 2024–25. Punjab's cotton area reduced to 1 lakh hectare from 2.140 lakh hectares in 2023–24. The area dropped to 4.760 lakh hectares in Haryana and to 5.195 lakh hectares in Rajasthan, from 6.650 lakh hectares and 6.830 lakh hectares respectively. The Cotton Association of India (CAI) recently stated that north India's cotton output fell to 27.50 lakh bales (170 kg each) in the current season, down from 45.62 lakh bales last season. Production estimates for the current season are: Punjab – 1.50 lakh bales, Haryana – 7.80 lakh bales, upper Rajasthan – 9.60 lakh bales, and lower Rajasthan – 8.60 lakh bales. In comparison, last season's output were: Punjab – 3.65 lakh bales, Haryana – 13.30 lakh bales, upper Rajasthan – 15.47 lakh bales, and lower Rajasthan – 13.20 lakh bales. Ration card holders in Telangana to get 3-month fine rice quota in one go in June
Hyderabad: The state govt is faced with the challenge of supplying the three-month quota of fine rice to over 90 lakh ration card holders in June. This comes after the Centre has directed all the states to release three months of free ration (June, July, and August) at one time in June under the Public Distribution System (PDS). However, sources said another reason could be that the godowns of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) have excessive stocks, and the move is aimed at creating space for paddy and wheat stocks of the current rainy season that would start coming soon. This is not the first time that this bulk release of ration is being permitted. During COVID-19, similar measures were taken to release two months' ration at a time, reducing logistical hassles and providing continuous access to food during mobility restrictions. Though cases of coronavirus are being reported from some parts of the country, officials said the situation is not alarming, and this could not be the reason for the Centre's directive. Usually, such steps are taken in times of health or national emergencies, and neither of them seems to be the cause for the Centre's directive now, said sources. Officials of the Telangana Civil Supplies Corporation said they have sufficient stocks of fine rice, procured during the last Kharif and Rabi seasons. "We will be able to supply nearly 6 lakh metric tonnes of fine rice, which is a three-month quota, to all the ration card holders in the state in June. However, the distribution will continue month-long and may also continue beyond June to ensure every cardholder gets the three-month quota," said an official, adding that such a move could be implemented once or twice but not regularly. Civil supplies commissioner DS Chauhan has issued orders to ensure that the directive is implemented and the ration card holders are provided with fine rice from June 1 to June 30.

Paddy procurement crossed 50 lakh tonnes: Telangana Minister Uttam Kumar
HYDERABAD: Irrigation & Civil Supplies Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Friday stated that the ongoing paddy procurement has crossed 50 lakh metric tonnes (LMT). Paddy procured during the corresponding period in 2023, when the BRS was in power, was 25.35 LMT, he said. The minister held a review meeting with district collectors and other officials at the Secretariat virtually. Ministers Thummala Nageswara Rao, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy and Ponnam Prabhakar also joined the video conference. After the meeting, Uttam posted on X: 'I am happy to announce that we have now crossed 50 LMT of paddy procurement in Yasangi (Rabi) season. On the same day, 15 May 2023, during the previous regime, the total paddy procurement in Yasangi was 25.35 LMT.' During the review meeting, comparative data was presented to underscore the scale of improvement over the previous years. After analysing the figures, the minister pointed out that in the Rabi 2022–23 season, paddy procurement stood at 25.35 LMT, which increased to 32.93 LMT in Rabi 2023–24. 'This year, in the ongoing Rabi 2024–25 season, procurement has reached 49.53 LMT by mid-May, a historic high and a clear reflection of the Congress government's commitment to farmers,' he said and pointed out that lower procurement levels and inadequate infrastructure had caused operational delays and dissatisfaction among farmers in Rabi 2022–23.
