Few video game adaptations have managed to break the curse, but The Last of Us did just that when its first season premiered in 2023. Rather than falling into the usual pitfalls of shallow storytelling and clumsy pacing, HBO's adaptation captured the hearts of critics, general viewers and fans alike.
The first season garnered 24 Emmy nominations and won eight awards, including Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for Nick Offerman. Now, the post-apocalyptic series is almost back for its highly anticipated second season, with Kaitlyn Dever joining the cast as Abby.
Premiering later this week, the seven-episode season will see Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey reprise their roles as Joel and Ellie, and will adapt at least a portion of The Last of Us Part II. Here's everything we know about The Last of Us season 2, including where and when you'll be able to watch it in the UK.
When does 'The Last of Us' season 2 come out?
It's official: The Last of Us season two will premiere on Sunday 13 April 2025 in the US. In the UK, it will debut on Monday 14 April. It's now been confirmed that the first episode will be broadcast simultaneously at 2am on Sky Atlantic and Now, in line with its HBO release.
If you're not keen on staying up late, don't worry – it'll be available to stream on catch-up shortly after, and a prime-time repeat will take place at 9pm on Sky Atlantic.
What is 'The Last of Us' season 2 about?
The Last of Us season 2 will follow the events of the second game in the franchise, but it won't cover all of it. In fact, the TV adaptation of The Last of Us: Part II will stretch out over multiple seasons – which makes sense given the game's scope. 'We don't think that we're going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [2 and 3] because we're taking our time and go down interesting pathways which we did a little bit in season 1 too,' Craig Mazin told Deadline last year. 'We feel like it's almost assuredly going to be the case that — as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television — season 3 will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require season 4'.
The official synopsis for The Last of Us season 2 states: 'After five years of peace following the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie's collective past catches up to them, drawing them into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind'. The teaser trailer doesn't reveal too much, but it looks like, as with season 1, it's sticking fairly close to the source material.
Mazin and Neil Druckmann, the game's creator, say they've found a natural ending point to break the game up into multiple seasons. While we won't go into detail (no game spoilers here), some fans speculate that season 2 will end at the theatre, with Ellie coming face to face with Abby.
In the full-length trailer for The Last of Us season 2, we get a proper look at some major new characters in action. Kaitlyn Dever's Abby is seen fighting off infected and standing among the Washington Liberation Front. Isabela Merced's Dina – Ellie's love interest – is introduced; Young Mazino's Jesse appears in some scenes and Jeffrey Wright's Isaac is shown leading the WLF. Catherine O'Hara also makes a brief appearance, but her role remains a mystery, though she's likely a new character made for the show.
How to catch up on 'The Last of Us' season 1 in the UK
The Last of Us is available to stream on Sky and Now TV here in the UK. If you're not already a Sky customer, you can get yourself a Sky Stream box (£15 per month, Sky.com), which comes with a Sky TV entertainment package and a free subscription to Netflix's standard plan with ads, as well as a free subscription to Discovery+ (the home of Eurosport).
If you don't want to buy the Sky Stream box, but still want to watch The Last of Us, you can stream it on the Sky-owned Now streaming service (formerly Now TV). You'll need an entertainment membership to watch the show (£9.99 per month, Nowtv.com).
You can also buy the entire season 1 boxset on Apple TV+ (£21.99, Apple.com) and Amazon Prime Video (£21.99, Amazon.co.uk).
How many episodes of 'The Last of Us' season 2 are there?
The Last of Us season 2 has seven episodes in total. That's slightly shorter than the length of season 1.
The first episode of The Last of Us, titled Future Days will be broadcast on Monday 14 April 2025 in the UK. That title is significant for anyone who's played the game, but we won't give any spoilers.
The episode synopsis reads: 'After five years of peace, Joel and Ellie's collective past catches up with them, drawing them into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.'

Billy Joel says 'I'm not dying' after cancelling tour due to brain condition
The music legend's Murrayfield Stadium gig was due to take place on June 6, but was cancelled along with the rest of Joel's tour due to his health. Billy Joel was forced to cancel his entire 2025 tour, having been diagnosed with a brain disorder known as normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). The star was due to take the stage at Murrayfield Stadium on June 6, a gig which had previously been postponed to give him time to recover from surgery. The 'Uptown Girl' singer has been diagnosed with NPH, which is a condition that causes a build-up of fluid in the brain. The 76-year-old's team shared a statement with fans on May 23, apologising for the cancellation of his tour. It said that his brain condition"has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance.' And the singer added: "I am sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience and thank you for understanding.' However, since then the star has been quiet, and was notably absent from the screening of his new documentary 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes' last Wednesday, June 4, at Tribeca Film Festival. Despite his absence, he relayed a message to the crowd through the film's co-director, Susan Lacy. 'We know Billy wishes he were here tonight, and he asked us to convey that to you all. "In fact, he said, 'Getting old sucks, but it's preferable to getting cremated,'' Lacy told the audience, reported Deadline. He also assured his fans that 'he will be back.' The two founders of Tribeca Film Festival- Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal- also acknowledged Joel's health condition and absence. Rosenthal said: 'Billy wanted to be with us tonight, but as you may have heard, he's dealing with a health issue and had to postpone his performances, including this one tonight. "We know you will join us in wishing him a speedy recovery.' De Niro added: 'He's our piano man, a wonderful, integral part of the heartbeat of our city. "Tonight, we get to see the man behind the music and behind the legend. You're in for a real treat.' According to outlet NJ, radio host Howard Stern recently had a conversation with Billy Joel, in which the star urged him to let fans know that he 'is not dying'. During a recent episode of The Howard Stern Show on Sirius XM, Stern discussed a recent dinner he had with Joel. Stern said: 'He does have issues. But he said to me- so I'm not saying anything crazy- 'Yeah, you can tell people: I'm not dying.' He wants people to know that. "He's got to deal with some medical stuff. But he was delightful. We had a great time with the wives. Billy's doing okay.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. EXCLUSIVE Gemma Collins reveals why 'you couldn't pay her' to go back to Spain and the surprising budget hotel chain she's a fan of
Despite Gemma Collins famously spending many a holiday in 'Marbs' - aka glitzy Spanish resort Marbella, the reality TV star says she's now more than ready to bid 'adios' to Spain for good. Why? The 44-year-old admits that after years of partying on the Costa del Sol with her The Only Way is Essex (TOWIE) co-stars, the destination has lost its shine. 'You couldn't pay me to go to Spain,' she says. 'It's like popping to London, I do it so much. It's not a vibe for me, I wouldn't waste my time going there.' She's done with tapas too, adding: 'I just couldn't eat another prawn pil pil if you paid me.' And while she does maintain a soft spot for Benidorm, calling the Costa Blanca tourist resort 'fun', there's another country that she's fallen head over heels in love with. Italy, she swoons to MailOnline Travel, is her all-time favourite destination, describing the hilltop town of Taormina in Sicily as the 'most stunning place on earth'. Gemma visited long before series two of HBO's The White Lotus was filmed there - but has returned since the series shone a spotlight on it, checking in at the Four Seasons San Domenico Palace, where much of the action on the show takes place. She explains: 'I went back [after the series aired] and it was full of lovely American people. But I was like, honey, I'm here for the pasta!' Venice is another of Gemma's top destinations: 'For me, it's absolutely spectacular. You will just not get over the amazing architecture, you've never seen nothing like it! 'It's just so cultured, everything is so beautiful. The food, the people, the history. But take money for the water taxis, they're not cheap!' And while she admits that she once spent £40,000 on a holiday to Greece for her family, where they ate 'lamb chops and halloumi like it was going out of fashion', the reality star claims she's equally happy on a £400 break. 'Sometimes I just want a beach, a little taverna to the left of my eye, a cold lager and a dip in the sea. You don't always need the frills and spills. 'It's like when people say to me "Do you want a lobster roll sandwich?" I'm like, "no, just give me some cheese, please". Sometimes you just want normal, nice and basic.' She's a fan of Premier Inn too - 'you can pick a pillow!' - and says that she prides herself on being 'a diverse traveller'. 'I like so many different things depending on the trip. Travelling for me doesn't need to be super expensive.' But when it comes to packing - and picking up a few souvenirs - Gemma doesn't tend to hold back. She explains: 'I'm known to collect on my travels. My partner goes absolutely mad. I don't think women should carry their own cases. He gets fed up of carrying the bags. Taormina's Four Seasons Hotel San Domenico Palace (pictured) provided the backdrop for The White Lotus, and Gemma says she loves checking in to the luxury property 'Once I went to Mykonos with two cases and then I ended up with 11. I just went crazy out there.' The star was unable to take all 11 cases on the plane at the airport so treated a friend to a three-night stay on the Greek island and he arranged for the return of the rest of the bags. Although holidays for Gemma are all about the people she's with, she says she's also had 'beautiful' experiences travelling solo. 'It's just so empowering to be a solo traveller. Obviously it's daunting at first and it can be scary. [But] there's so much liberation when you've done the trip. 'I often go to restaurants on my own. It's just nice to have some peace and quiet sometimes.' Any wonder then, with her down-to-earth attitude and fun-loving nature, she's been crowned the celebrity that Gen Z would most like to go out on a night out with, in a new survey by Trainline. The feeling's mutual; Gemma's also a fan of Gen Z, saying she'd have liked to have been one herself: 'Big up to all the Gen Zs. I think they're fun. 'I'm always down for new energy and new vibrancy and I think Gen Z just do it perfectly.' Describing herself as a 'ball of energy', she says a night out on the town starts the 'minute she wakes up'. 'It's the group chats. The voice notes. I'm thinking about what I'm going to wear...' Although the self-proclaimed diva is known for her glam looks, she's no stranger to getting ready in the back of the car or on the train. 'Because of the nature of what I do, I've got ready in toilets and in petrol stations,' says Gemma. 'On a train journey, you've got the whole of the journey to get ready. [I think] let's just do the glam on the train!' Of course, being 'The GC' means that it can be a challenge for Gemma to fly under the radar. She doesn't mind being recognised though and likes to make time to say hello to fans when she's spotted. 'I've been known to stand at the ice cream van and just get people a load of ice creams,' she says. Any fans hungry for a 99 cone from Gemma might want to head to Devon where the star is travelling by train later this summer. Where else is on her travel wish-list? India, where she says she'd love to spend 'three months exploring'. And while Gemma would also be up for a U.S. road trip in the future, Gen Z's favourite diva definitely won't be getting behind the wheel on those ten-lane freeways. 'I would need a driver. I want to relax along the way, take in the sights, make a few calls, touch up my lip gloss...' Gemma has teamed up with Trainline to launch Slaystation, a one-stop stop for pre-night out glam. Head to Trainline presents SlayStation to find out more and book your slot to glam up at SlayStation – totally free of charge! Get your 'Big Night Out' off to a great start. EastEnders' Vicki is disturbed as shocking new secret about Joel is revealed
EastEnders' Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig) is disturbed after finding out a shocking secret about her partner Ross Marshall's (Alex Walkinshaw) son Joel (Max Murray) next week. It was recently confirmed that teenager Joel will take feature in a dark incel plot, having arrived in Walford with Ross and Vicki hiding a huge secret earlier this year. It was later revealed that while still living in Australia, Joel had upskirted one of his schoolmates and shared the photo online. Ross paid the family off to prevent them going to the police, but they demanded that Joel did not return to Sydney. While Ross and Vicki hoped that Joel had changed his ways since moving onto Albert Square, his behaviour has only worsened, having recorded himself and Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James) having sex without her consent. While Avani remains unaware of the video's existence, she has been on the receiving end of online trolling after word spread around Walford High that she and Joel had slept together. In scenes to air this week, Amy Mitchell (Ellie Dadd) reveals to Vicki that Joel is the reason Avani is getting more abusive messages, as he shamed Avani for sleeping with him. A disgusted Vicki informs partner Ross about her discovery, and the couple agree that Joel needs more positive male role models in his life. More Trending While they hope his friendship with Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall) will be good for him, little do they know that he recently encouraged Tommy to pay for adult content using Alfie Moon's (Shane Richie) credit card.
