Defence co-chair Gigaba rejects claims of shielding Motshekga from accountability

Eyewitness News20 hours ago
CAPE TOWN - The African National Congress (ANC) parliamentary caucus has refuted allegations that Joint Standing Committee on Defence co-chairperson, Malusi Gigaba, is shielding Minister Angie Motshekga from accountability.
The ANC study group on defence and military veterans has rallied behind Gigaba, saying the allegations made by the Democratic Alliance (DA)'s Nicholas Gotsell, regarding the R813 million allocated for the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) deployment allowances are unfounded.
Gotsell said this week that Motshekga has not been to Parliament to account for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) deployment for months, and she is being shielded from accounting by the joint committee.
The National Council of Provinces member on Security and Justice, Gotsell, has written to the National Assembly to escalate what he calls the failure of the committee to hold a meeting to get to the bottom of what happened to the missing R813 million, which is unaccounted for by the SANDF.

ANC members no longer allowed to chant 'Kill the Boer', says Mbalula

ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula says party members are no longer allowed to chant 'Kill the Boer'. Mbalula was briefing the media on Wednesday about the outcomes of the party's national executive committee (NEC) meeting. 'As the ANC, we sang that song, but no member of the ANC today will be allowed to sing 'Kill the Boer',' he said. 'Simple as that. 'Even if the Constitutional Court said you can sing it, why should we sing 'Kill the Boer' in a democratic dispensation?' The song dates back to the anti-apartheid movement and was used as a protest song against the Afrikaner-dominated government. The EFF continues to sing the song, while civil rights organisation AfriForum argues that the song incites harm and hatred towards Afrikaners. However, the courts have ruled that it does not constitute hate speech. 'We sang the song because we were fighting the commandos when we infiltrated the country from Limpopo. They deployed the Boers and commandos to kill the [MK] guerrillas as we infiltrated the country. From Angola and in the front-line states, we sang 'Kill the Boer, kill the farmer' to infiltrate the country and come inside to fight,' said Mbalula.

'49 car guards landed in America': Mbalula ridicules white ‘refugees' in US

ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula poked at white 'refugees' who left South Africa for the United States of America, calling them 'car guards'. Mbalula espoused the views after the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Wednesday. "Donald Trump called for whites here, gave them special status in America. Forty-nine car guards arrived in the US," Mbalula said. "He is saying that we are a racist country and everything else. He gave them special status to leave." The first batch of South Africans left for the United States in May on a private chartered plane. Sam Busa, the founder of Amerikaners, an advocacy group for the 'refugees,' took issue with Mbalula's statements. "The original 59 legal refugees who are safely settled in America are now employees and entrepreneurs, contributing members of American society. The contempt with which Mbalula speaks of the loss of this human capital, given the frail state of South Africa, is alarming. "His comments expose a shocking level of disrespect for his own citizenry, together with a lack of acumen for global diplomacy that says more about him than it does about said refugees. For his information, we are aware that they are thriving in their new home," Busa said.

Sanctions or not, we won't back down: ANC defiant on BBBEE amid US pressure

ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalulainsists the ANC will not abandon Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment or transformation policies despite US pressure, warning that sanctions would be accepted rather than sacrificing South Africa's sovereignty. ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has criticised the Democratic Alliance (DA) for campaigning against South Africa's transformation policies abroad, saying this has contributed to punitive US tariffs and threats of sanctions against ANC leaders. South Africa faces a potential 30% tariff on exports to the US. He warned the ANC would not abandon its transformation agenda, including Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE), despite pressure from Washington and its political allies. Addressing the media in the post-NEC briefing on Wednesday, Mbalula said the ANC is not prepared to abandon its economic transformation policies to appease the United States. 'You must understand that the tariffs imposed by the United States of America are going to negatively affect our economy,' he said. Mbalula accused the DA of lobbying during US visits to have policies like BBBEE scrapped, which he said aligns with longstanding imperialist attitudes. 'You can't, for national interest, say undo BEE to appease the United States of America because, among others, this is what the US wants of us, that we must do away with certain policies which, for us in terms of transformation, are not going to assist us,' Mbalula said.
