Practice gets physical at Bears camp, but Tyrique Stevenson works to tone down his temper
Head coach Ben Johnson challenged the team Tuesday morning, saying he wanted a good, physical practice. His players delivered and then some — with a few skirmishes even breaking out in the portion during which the news media were not allowed to shoot video.
"Today was physical. I think Coach Ben this morning kind of brought it out of everybody, and kind of told us the offense was going to come at us," said Bears cornerback Nahshon Wright.
"I feel like that's what we should practice like every day. That's the message that the team shot to us — the coaching staff and everybody," said Stevenson. "That's what we need to see out there every day to be a championship defense and championship offense."
Coming off a tumultuous 2024 season, Stevenson is battling to keep the No. 2 cornerback job, and working on letting his play do the talking.
"Just controlling it — being a pro. At the end of the day, that's really the message that is getting portrayed to me — just learn how to be a pro, how to go about your business every day, and pretty much controlling my personality," Stevenson said. "You know, sometimes, you've got to tone it down. Sometimes, you've got to let it go. But other times, it has to be at the right level, and that's what I've got to do to be a part of this team."
Coach Johnson called Stevenson a hard worker and good person to talk to, but did say Stevenson does sometimes talk a little too much — something Stevenson is clearly working on.

Bregman previously played nine seasons with the Astros as one of the faces of a franchise that won two World Series titles during his tenure. He was named to two All-Star teams, won a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger and received MVP votes in four different seasons during his time with the Astros. He joined the Red Sox on a three-year, $120 million contract in the offseason as Boston sought to raise its profile as a competitor in the AL playoff race. Bregman's so far delivered. He entered Monday with the highest batting average of his career while slashing .298/.380/.531. His two-run blast off of Javier put him at 15 home runs and 48 RBI for the season. He was named an All-Star for the third time of his career in June. The Red Sox, meanwhile, entered Monday with a three-game cushion for second of three AL wild-card spots. A postseason matchup with Astros — who entered Monday with a half-game lead over the Seattle Mariners in the AL West — is potentially in store.

Yankees' Gerrit Cole begins throwing program following Tommy John surgery
NEW YORK — Gerrit Cole took a significant step in his recovery from Tommy John surgery on Monday, as the Yankees' sidelined ace began his throwing program. The pitcher, now sporting a throwback mustache on his upper lip and scar across his right elbow, made 20 throws off flat ground before the Yankees kicked off a three-game series with the Twins. Cole said the session went well, and he was pleased with himself for being 'fairly accurate.' 'I'd been building up to it for a few weeks,' he continued, 'so it was nice to get outside and get it accomplished and have it go well.' Aaron Boone, meanwhile, said that he was 'excited' for the 2023 American League Cy Young, who needed his ulnar collateral ligament reconstructed — with the assist of an internal brace — back in March. 'He's done a good job with rehab,' Boone said, 'and this is one of those cool markers along the way that you know is significant to hit.' Now that he's made his first throws, Cole isn't exactly sure what his upcoming rehab schedule looks like. He said his initial progression will take 'a few months,' though. 'We're right at the beginning of it, and there's no rush,' said the veteran, who will not pitch again this season. Cole said his next big step is to get off the mound. Once he does that a few times, he'll shut down before embarking on what he expects to be a 'relatively' normal offseason. The 34-year-old added that his rehab will move to his native California in the winter. Back in May, Cole didn't completely rule out starting the 2026 season on time, but he also said he was anticipating a 14-month recovery, even with the brace. That would put him on track for a late-May or June return next year. With that in mind, the Yankees are expected to be without two of their top starters at the beginning of the 2026 season. Clarke Schmidt also underwent Tommy John surgery last month; he hopes to return after the 2026 All-Star break. Reliever Jake Cousins also underwent Tommy John surgery this season. He had the operation in June.
