2025 World Cup players to be protected from abuse
World Rugby says it is extending an online protection scheme for all players, coaches and officials at the upcoming 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup after already detecting more than 2,000 accounts posting hateful messages.The governing body partnered with an online monitoring agency before the 2023 Men's World Cup and the service is set to be extended for the women's tournament in England later this year. World Rugby says greater visibility of female players, who receive 30% more abuse than their male counterparts, is likely to lead to more online trolling and hate speech.Since working with monitoring agency Signify Group, World Rugby has:Analysed 1.6m messages on X (formerly Twitter) and InstagramDetected and flagged 61,136 potentially abusive messages, of which 2,589 were reported to the respective platformsIdentified 2,010 individual accounts associated with the 2,589 abusive messagesSupported 18 targeted match officials and World Rugby stakeholdersCompleted 75 investigations, with 11 reported to police and relevant authorities, resulting in seven prosecutions or law enforcement warningsWorld Rugby says it is taking a "proactive stance" to protect its "rugby family"."Online abuse is a pervasive issue that affects the mental wellbeing of our players," said World Rugby chief of women's rugby Sally Horrox."England 2025 is poised to be a transformative moment and the largest global celebration of women's rugby to date. "By extending our partnership to encompass all participating players, we are taking a proactive stance to protect our rugby family and ensure a safe and supportive environment, underscoring our commitment to fostering respect and inclusivity within the sport."BBC Sport has exclusive rights to broadcast every game of the tournament, which begins on 22 August.

Teacher accused of upskirting girls fled to Australia to return to class
Dean Barr was accused of looking up girls skirts and down their tops. A teacher fled to Australia for work after he was suspended in Scotland over claims he "upskirted" female pupils. Dean Barr, 36, had been working at a school in Helensburgh for seven years before he was accused of a series inappropriate behaviour towards teenage girls - including looking up their skirts and down their tops - as well as making a number of unwanted comments. A probe was launched by the General Teaching Council Scotland (GTCS) in June 2023. In October that year, he was placed on a Temporary Restriction Order preventing him from teaching while the probe continued. But Barr headed to Western Australia in April 2024, where he applied to register as a teacher. During the process, he failed to declare his involvement in a disciplinary process or the concerning allegations against him. In June that year, he landed a job in the Design and Technology department at Halls Head College, in Mandurah, near Perth, where he worked for four months until the country's education department was made aware of concerns around his fitness to teach. Teaching officials then contacted colleagues back in Scotland, before discovering the shocking details of the investigation into his conduct. It is alleged that in March 2020, Barr slapped the pupil on the bottom and said 'Oh that couldn't have gone any better". In the same month, he is accused of messaging pupils privately on X, formerly known as Twitter. Between August and October 2022, the former business teacher allegedly called pupils 'pretty' and referred to them as cats, brushed a pen on a female pupil's face, bent down to move boxes so he could look up two pupils' skirts and whispered in a female pupil's ear while looking down her top. Barr also allegedly made unnecessary contact with pupils, repeatedly putting his arm around them. In November 2022, Barr asked one female student if a ladder on her tights was 'a ladder or a stairway to heaven'. It is understood the GTCS are still investigating the reported behaviour after being contacted by education officials in Australia. Barr's employment at Halls Head College was terminated in December 2024, after the allegations in Scotland came to light. A parent of one of the girls who accused Barr of inappropriate behaviour told of her shock at the news he had moved countries to secure another teaching job. She said: "He thought he avoid all this because he moved to Australia. But someone stopped him. Hopefully now some action will be taken." The mum said her daughter is "traumatised" by the alleged incidents. She said: "My daughter said it started with a comment and it took nearly four months for her to tell me something was wrong. She would do anything not to go in to school. After a while, I didn't recognise her because she was shell of who she used to be. She is still traumatised and has serious trust issues." "We appreciate your solidarity and understanding in this difficult time for our club and Enzo Pittau's family." We were all in shock, the players and us in the stands. The match was stopped for a while and then suspended. Witness A witness told Diario Chaco via Contexto Tucuman: "I was in the middle of the match and Pittau fell to the ground. It was as if he had fainted. "I can still see it, and it's very painful. Advertisement "Everything turned into chaos. People were running, screaming, crying, and yelling for help. "From the stands, we didn't really know what had happened, but it was awful." Another witness said: "I have this image of Pittau falling alone. I can't get it out of my head. "We're dismayed by what happened. Advertisement "It hurts quite a bit. We were all in shock, the players and us in the stands. The match was stopped for a while and then suspended." Local media say Pittau had returned to Chaco to be near his family after his grandfather had health problems. Sunday's tragic match was the return leg in the second phase of the Argentinian Federativo tournament's second phase.

Two men charged with murder after boy, four, killed in pick-up truck crash
Two men have been charged with murder after a four-year-old boy was killed in a crash between two pickup trucks. Peter Maughan was killed in the crash on New Barn Road, Dartford, which has also left his dad, 24, fighting for his life. His one-year-old baby sister was also taken to hospital with minor injuries. Police were called to the scene around 9.30pm on June 1, and all three victims, who were from the same vehicle, were taken to hospital. Patrick Maughan, 53, and Owen Maughan, 27, have been charged with murder. Tributes have poured in for Peter, who was known as Peter Rabbit, saying his death was 'the saddest thing they heard'. One friend wrote: 'Rest in peace Peter Rabbit please everyone keep them in your prayers it's a cruel world.' 'They remain in custody while enquiries continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision.
