Virgil van Dijk made it very clear what Liverpool dressing room thinks of Alexander Isak
Virgil van Dijk's pre- Carabao Cup final comments indicate that 'red-hot' Newcastle talisman Alexander Isak is revered by the Liverpool squad. The Reds submitted an opening £110million offer for Isak this summer, but a move has since stalled.
Despite spending almost £300m on the likes of Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Hugo Ekitike and potential British record transfer Florian Wirtz, Arne Slot's side are still eyeing up a blockbuster move for the Magpies' star Swedish striker. The club tabled a £110m bid earlier this month, which was swiftly rejected, and have not returned with a follow-up.
Reports suggest Newcastle have informed their player he is not for sale this summer and will not head to Anfield, though not all hope is lost. Nevertheless, Isak knows exactly how Liverpool's squad feels about him, after the club's captain made a glowing admission before March's Carabao Cup final between the Reds and Newcastle.
Asked about facing Newcastle in the final, Van Dijk did not hold back when praising striker Isak, an indicator of just how highly he is rated by players on Merseyside.
"Obviously, they have a striker that is in red-hot form at the moment," Van Dijk told CBS Sports with a chuckle in February. "So when the time is there, we have to be ready."
With Liverpool's pursuit of Isak hitting a snag, manager Slot was asked whether the departed Darwin Nunez, who has joined Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, would be replaced by the 25-year-old, and he remained tight-lipped in his response.
"As you know from me, and I think every manager works like this, you never talk about players that are not yours," Slot told reporters before their Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace.
"So I can talk to you about Hugo [Ekitike], who we've signed recently and has done really well until now. We are very happy with the squad we have.
"There's every reason to be happy about that, because we won the league last season. OK, players left, but we've brought players in as well and youngsters are doing good."
Slot also touched on the club's current range of attacking talent, which was on full display at Wembley against the Eagles, with new recruits Ekitike and Frimpong finding the back of the net.
The Dutch manager refused to rule out his side returning to the transfer market, however, but did admit that his current arsenal is already impressive.
"I think, we think, we already have a lot of attacking power in our team," Slot continued. "I think about Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa, Hugo Ekitike and Mo Salah.
"We brought in Jeremie Frimpong because we think he can play as a right full-back but I also think and feel he can play as a right-winger - Florian Wirtz who can play as a left winger.
"I already feel I have a lot of attacking options in my current squad, but as always, as a club, we are always looking at the chances in the market. But that can also be in the midfield or in the last line."

Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister reveals how Arne Slot stepped up during personal difficulties
Arne Slot led Liverpool to the Premier League title in his first season at the help but Alexis Mac Allister has also spoken about the part played by the Dutch manager off the pitch Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister was brought to Anfield in Jurgen Klopp's final season before winning the Premier League in the first campaign under Arne Slot. The Argentina international has spoken about the difference between the two bosses, while also opening up on how Slot helped him through a particularly difficult spell away from the pitch. Mac Allister was a regular for the Reds last term, starting 30 of their 38 Premier League matches. It was a dream first season for new boss Slot, and the Argentina international has spoken about the other ways the former Feyenoord manager helped in ways some might not have seen. "I don't want to go into details, but I was going through some very personal difficulties last season," Mac Allister told The Players' Tribune. "I told one person what I was going through, and it ended up reaching Arne. "He called me into his office one day. You never know how something like that is going to go in football. But Arne was amazing about everything. He let me get everything off my chest, and after that, I felt like I could breathe a bit easier. "And my teammates, they were incredible. They kept me smiling through difficult times. Especially our little South American crew: Lucho [Diaz]. Alisson. Darwin [Nunez]. Even Mr. Taffarel (former goalkeeping coach Claudio Taffarel). What a legend! He's almost 60, and there's no one funnier than him." Mac Allister played under Roberto De Zerbi in his final season at previous club Brighton, and also spoke about the similarities between the Italian and Slot. "What can I say? I like to speak to my managers on the training ground and understand what they want from me. It was the same with De Zerbi and now it's the same with Arne. I have four or five dads, I guess!" he said. "When Arne came in, it was a huge change for us, because his style is a bit different. It's less rock and roll and more possession, but it worked out so well for us. But his support off the pitch was even more important for me." Liverpool begin their 2025-26 campaign against Bournemouth on Friday. They did the double over Andoni Iraola's side last term, with Mac Allister involved in both games, and have signed Milos Kerkez from the Cherries this summer. Three of the so-called South American crew have departed this summer. Diaz has joined Bayern Munich, Nunez has left Anfield for Al Hilal, and coach Taffarel has made way for the returning Xavi Valero. There have also been plenty of new additions, though, with Giovanni Leoni the latest to arrive. The Italian centre-back's move from Parma was confirmed on Friday, just hours before the league opener.

Phil Parkinson addresses £10m Nathan Broadhead fee rumours
Welsh international, Broadhead, put pen paper on a four-year-deal at the SToK Cae Ras on Thursday. It has been speculated that the Reds have paid Ipswich Town £10m for the North Wales-born attacker, who was at Wrexham as a child. But ahead of the visit of West Brom on Saturday, in which the new signing could make his debut, Parkinson was clear to address talk about the transfer fee. He said: "The fee has been out there as £10m, but I think we've got to get in the Premier League and win the Champions League for it to go up to that, but it's a price for a player of real Championship quality. "The fee with Ipswich has been agreed for quite a long time but they wanted to bring a player in so we've had to be patient but they've been very fair and both parties are happy with the deal. "He's got that Championship pedigree and he can create something in tight situations. "You need players that can unlock the door and can create key moments in games and Nathan's got that, he's shown it at Ipswich and the story of him coming home is a great one as well. He was really keen to come to us and looking forward to working with him. "He's shown a real desire to come to us but has been respectful for his time at Ipswich as well."
