Abuse survivor Loh says 'painful memories lingers,' but wants to pay respect to former husband

SUNGAI PETANI: Loh Siew Hong, who was abused by her former husband, has travelled with her three children to Sungai Petani to pay their last respects following his death, despite the pain and trauma she endured before their separation.
"While the painful memories linger, my three children and I want to see his face. My kids want to pay their last respects to their father," she told the New Straits Times.
"We are currently in Sungai Petani and we want to say goodbye," she added.
Her ex-husband, Muhammad Nagahswaran Muniandy, died yesterday. He was 38.
The pair became embroiled in a custody dispute after Nagahswaran took their three children to Perlis and unilaterally converted them to Islam in 2020.
In 2022, Loh alleged that he had battered her over the head and broken her ankle.
Referring to the past abuse and forced separation from her children, Loh said: "I have endured a lot of suffering, but I want to see him for the last time."
Loh and her three children — a pair of 17-year-old twin girls and a 14-year-old boy — now live in Selangor.

Rescued foreigners were promised jobs

GEORGE TOWN: The three foreign men rescued from wrongful confinement during a police raid on an apartment here on Tuesday had been promised employment — but were never given jobs. Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad told the New Straits Times that the victims had been held for periods ranging from four months to a year. "Yes, their legs were chained, but not around the clock. There were times when the caretaker removed the chains upon request. "They also remained silent throughout their confinement, which is why neighbours were completely unaware of the situation," he said. Rozak added that one of the men had secretly hidden a mobile phone and managed to contact a relative in Indonesia for help — a move that led to their rescue. He said investigations were ongoing. The victims — aged between 28 and 52 — were found in good health and rescued following a report lodged by a 47-year-old foreigner, who claimed his friends were being held against their will. The raid, conducted on Tuesday, led to the arrest of three Malaysian men aged between 40 and 56, along with a 40-year-old foreign woman believed to have been guarding the victims. Rozak said that two of the suspects were expected to be charged in court tomorrow. Meanwhile, residents at the apartment complex said they were shocked to learn about the incident. Some, who spoke to the NST on condition of anonymity, said they had no idea anyone was being held captive. A resident living a few floors above the unit said there was nothing unusual to indicate something was wrong. "We didn't hear anything suspicious — no shouting or signs of distress. "We only found out what happened when we saw it on social media," he said. Another resident, who lives just a few doors away, said they only realised something was amiss when police officers arrived on Tuesday afternoon.

Ex-husband of Loh Siew Hong passes away during ongoing domestic violence case

PETALING JAYA: Muhammad Nagahswaran Muniandy, the former spouse of Loh Siew Hong, passed away at age 38, yesterday. The matter was confirmed by Loh's lawyer Shamsher Singh Thind when contacted by FMT. The pair had been involved in a prolonged custody dispute following Nagahswaran's decision to relocate their three children to Perlis and convert them to Islam without mutual consent in 2020. Multiple court rulings had previously awarded custody to Loh, beginning with a temporary order in December 2019 that evolved into complete custody by March 2021. The couple's marriage was legally dissolved in September 2021. Following her departure from the marriage in 2019 due to alleged mistreatment, Loh initiated habeas corpus proceedings for her children in early 2022. The High Court sided with Loh, leading to her reunion with the children, who had temporarily been under the care of religious teacher Nazirah Nanthakumari Abdullah. In the same year, Loh sought judicial review regarding the children's religious conversion. The Federal Court determined in April 2024 that both parents must agree to any religious conversion of their children, confirming the children's Hindu status. A final challenge by Perlis state authorities to restore the children's Muslim status was rejected in April this year. Nagahswaran reportedly had previous legal troubles, serving restricted residence in Kelantan for drug-related charges from November 2020 until November 2022. This criminal history emerged during custody proceedings and formed part of Loh's arguments for sole custody of their children. His incarceration period overlapped with when Loh reported recovering from alleged domestic violence and medical treatment, adding complexity to the widely-reported case. In July 2023, Nagahswaran faced charges at Sungai Petani Sessions Court for allegedly causing serious injury to Loh at their Taman Ria residence on March 3, 2019. He had entered a not guilty plea, received RM10,000 bail, and was instructed to avoid contact with Loh and case witnesses while awaiting trial. The criminal proceedings had been set to begin in September this year.
