GENEVA, Switzerland (Reuters) -A last-gasp equaliser by Portugal's Diana Gomes against Italy in a thrilling 1-1 draw kept her country's Women's Euro campaign alive as her strike cancelled out a stunning second-half goal by Cristiana Girelli on Monday.
Le Azzurre thought they were through to the quarter-finals after Girelli scored in the 70th minute, shifting the ball to her right foot at the edge of the box before unleashing a curling shot into the top right corner that goalkeeper Patricia Morais had little chance of stopping.
But Gomes brought Portugal level in the 89th when a corner hit the bar and the Portuguese worked the ball back into the box for Gomes to fire home, sending their raucous fans, who chanted and banged drums throughout the night, into utter delirium.
The draw spoiled Italy's chance of clinching a berth in the knockout round on Monday, with Spain the only Group B team to have so far guaranteed a quarter-final spot with their 6-2 win over Belgium in the earlier match.

Modric's move to Milan confirmed by new coach Allegri

Real Madrid's Luka Modric announced in May that he would be leaving the Spanish giants after the Club World Cup. (AP pic) MILAN : Real Madrid's Croatia captain Luka Modric will join AC Milan after the Club World Cup, the Serie A club's newly-appointed manager Massimiliano Allegri confirmed today. The move means the 39-year-old midfielder, who announced in May that he would be leaving Real after the Club World Cup, will bring his 13-year spell at the Spanish giants to a close. 'Modric will arrive in August. He is an extraordinary player,' Allegri told reporters in his first press conference as Milan manager. Real face Paris St-Germain in the Club World cup semi-finals on Wednesday, with the final scheduled for Sunday. Modric, the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner, will join a Milan side looking to bounce back from a disappointing campaign that saw them finish eighth and miss out on European competition. 'To the fans, I say the most important thing is to work well every day,' Allegri said. 'The only way to regain respect is through responsibility and by achieving results. We will absolutely need their support.' The Italian, who has joined Milan for a second time after replacing the sacked Sergio Conceicao at the end of May, also outlined some key changes to the squad ahead of the new season. Netherlands midfielder Tijjani Reijnders was sold to Manchester City in June while France leftback Theo Hernandez could be on his way to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. 'While Reijnders and Hernandez won't be part of the team next season, (goalkeeper) Mike Maignan and (forward) Rafael Leao seem willing to stay,' Allegri said. Milan will kick off their Serie A campaign on Aug 23 with a home fixture against Cremonese. Allegri, who previously guided Milan to a Serie A title in the 2010-11 season, last managed Juventus.

Soccer-PSG crush Real Madrid 4-0 to reach Club World Cup final

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Reuters) -Paris St Germain's Spanish midfielder Fabian Ruiz scored twice in a devastating first-half display as the French champions demolished Real Madrid 4-0 on Wednesday to book their place in the Club World Cup final against Chelsea. Two defensive errors handed PSG their opening goals within nine minutes at MetLife Stadium. Raul Asencio's poor control in the sixth minute gifted Ousmane Dembele possession and his first effort was saved by Thibaut Courtois before the rebound was picked up by Ruiz who scored into an empty net. Antonio Ruediger's wayward pass three minutes later allowed Dembele to burst unmarked into the box before firing a tidy finish past Courtois. Ruiz struck again in the 24th minute after Achraf Hakimi made a great run down the right and the Spaniard held off defender Raul Asencio with a feint before finishing perfectly from close range. Substitute Goncalo Ramos completed the rout for European champions PSG three minutes from time. (Reporting by Fernando Kallas, editing by Ed Osmond)

Tennis-Shelton's need for speed proves costly against Sinner

Jul 9, 2025; Wimbledon, United Kingdom; Ben Shelton of the United States returns a shot during his match against Jannik Sinner of Italy on day 10 at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Mandatory Credit: Susan Mullane-Imagn Images LONDON (Reuters) -American Ben Shelton said he paid the price for trying to serve too fast after losing 7-6(2) 6-4 6-4 to Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon quarter-finals on Wednesday. The 22-year-old left-hander cranked out some huge firepower as he tried to knock the ice-cool Sinner off his stride but in the big moments his big weapons failed him. Top seed Sinner won seven successive points from 0-2 in the first set tiebreak, then broke Shelton's serve for the first time to capture the second set and repeated the trick as the 10th seed served to stay in the match. "You feel consistent pressure playing a guy like him, who returns as well as him throughout the match," Shelton, who was also beaten by Sinner in this year's Australian Open semi-final and has now lost 15 successive sets to the Italian, said. "I think possibly trying to go a little bit too big on the first serve in those moments or hitting it too hard. "Being able to stay calm and keep my emotions the exact same and know that my normal service motion where I go after a first serve, it's going to show up at 140mph on the clock. "It's not like when I go and hit my smooth service motion, it's going to come off 122mph. If I go from a flat serve with a smooth motion, it's going to come off 140, but chasing 147 sometimes in those moments is stupid." Shelton did not do much wrong against world number one Sinner but said playing him was like being on fast-forward. "His ball speed is really high. Never seen anything like it. You don't see anything like it when you're going through the draw. When you play him, it's almost like things are in two times speed," he said. Shelton reached a career-best fourth round at last month's French Open, losing to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz, and leaves Wimbledon with another personal best run. But he is hungry for more. "I know that I can play at the Grand Slams at this point. I know that I have the ability to be deep in the tournament when it's three-out-of-five sets," he said. "I could sit here and be like, 'wow, 22 years old and I've been able to do these things and achieve these things.' "But my mind is critical. I'm a critical thinker. I'm trying to solve problems," he said. "I know that I'm not where I want to be. That's kind of what I'm focusing on." (Reporting by Martyn HermanEditing by Toby Davis)
