The Chiefs aim to make history where they won their first Super Bowl title. Philly stands in the way

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Clark Hunt was not quite 5 years old when he settled into his seat in Tulane Stadium beside his parents to watch the Kansas City Chiefs, the franchise his father had founded in the brazen days of the AFL, as they played the Minnesota Vikings in Super IV.
Hunt doesn't remember the game itself. But once in a while, photos will surface that he has never seen before.
'I do have a photo of me sitting with my parents in the stands, right? I think they were benches. It sort of looked like a corner,' said Hunt, now 59, who assumed control of the Chiefs when his father, the visionary Lamar Hunt, died in December 2006.
'I guess that shows you how things have changed,' Hunt said.
Indeed, it's a safe bet that Hunt and the rest of his family had comfortable seats in a luxury suite when the Chiefs faced the Eagles on Sunday at the Superdome. Led by Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, and with a celebrity fan base that includes Taylor Swift and Caitlin Clark, the Chiefs were chasing an unprecedented third consecutive Lombardi Trophy.
The fact was not lost on Hunt that they were trying to make history in the same city where they won their first Super Bowl with a 23-7 victory over the Vikings on Jan. 11, 1970. In fact, Hunt seemed to view the coincidence as something closer to kismet, a point that he underscored by pointing out that the Chiefs spent this week practicing at Tulane University.
'I hate to say I don't have any memories from that Super Bowl,' he said, "but getting to go to Tulane where we're training and being literally a stone's throw from the old stadium where we won Super Bowl IV is really special.
'I always think about my parents Super Bowl week,' Hunt added, 'There's no way not to. But this one is going to be special.'
There's an argument to be made that nobody had a greater influence on the big game than Lamar Hunt.
The oil magnate was part of the 'Foolish Club' that founded the AFL, back when they were being kept out of the NFL, and he was instrumental in the merger years later that ultimately brought the two professional football leagues together.
In a letter to NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle, Hunt mused about the pending title game, saying: 'I have kiddingly called it the 'Super Bowl,' which obviously can be approved upon.' He was inspired by the must-have Christmas gift of the year that his wife, Norma, had gotten Clark Hunt and the rest of the kids: the Super Ball, made by toy company Wham-O.
Lamar Hunt regularly attended the Super Bowl, though he never saw his Chiefs play in it again. They wouldn't make it back until Andy Reid arrived in town, and Mahomes and Kelce helped Kansas City beat the 49ers in February 2020 — five full decades after they triumphed over the 'Purple People Eaters' and the rest of the Vikings at Tulane Stadium.
Norma Hunt continued to attend the Super Bowl until her death in June 2023. At the time, she was one of four people — and the only woman — who had attended every game, beginning with the Chiefs' loss to the Packers on Jan. 15, 1967.
The Chiefs were back Sunday for the fifth time in six years. And they were chasing a threepeat against the Eagles, the team Kansas City beat a couple of years ago in Glendale, Arizona, to win the first of its back-to-back championships.
'I would say every Chiefs fan is spoiled, and that includes me, right? Because it has been such a special five or six years," Hunt told a small group of local reporters this week. 'And I think we know we're spoiled because of the journey that it took to get to this point, and the five decades we went without getting back to the Super Bowl.'
This was the 11th time that New Orleans played host to the big game, tying Miami for the most of any city. The French Quarter had been packed all week with fans wearing Chiefs red and Eagles green, creating a kaleidoscope of Christmas colors stretching from Jackson Square to Canal Street, and bubbling all the way up to the Superdome.
The home of the Saints, and the de facto replacement for Tulane Stadium, was hosting the game for the eighth time.
'I don't think any of us really could have dreamed it being like this, and having the success we've had,' Clark Hunt said. 'My dad would have loved it because in his heart, he was a fan — him and my mom were fans, first and foremost. And he would love it for our fans, because that was always a focus of his.'

Bills Receive Good News on James Cook on Tuesday

Bills Receive Good News on James Cook on Tuesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Buffalo Bills have been looking to benefit off Josh Allen's prime for the past several years but have continuously fallen short of reaching the Super Bowl. Buffalo has met its match in the postseason on several occasions, losing four times to the Kansas City Chiefs led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid. As they look to dethrone the Chiefs in the AFC, who have won the conference championship in three straight seasons, the Bills have been monitoring the progress of running back James Cook throughout the offseason. Cook has missed several days of training camp as he looks to earn a contract extension, but the team got some good news Tuesday with ESPN's Adam Schefter reporting that the running back has returned to practice. According to Mike Florio at Pro Football Talk, the Bills had the chance to fine him for voluntarily missing practice due to a contract dispute. Another punishment could have occurred when Cook missed the Bills' preseason opener. Cook is entering his fourth season in the NFL after rushing for 1,009 yards and scoring a career-high 18 total touchdowns in 2024. The Bills running back was also featured in the passing game, with 32 receptions for 258 yards. He has been a vital piece to the Bills offense, led by the 2024 MVP Allen. Allen now has his workhorse running back in the backfield, helping open up the offense. The Bills quarterback is looking to get back to business after having the best season of his career. Last season, Allen completed 63.6% of his passes for 3,731 yards and 28 touchdowns. He also rushed for 531 yards and 12 touchdowns. Rams go far in CBS Sports' 'Madden' simulation for 2025 NFL season

The Madden NFL video game franchise is a great place to speculate on what a team will do in any given season. It's not a perfect science — and the player ratings aren't always loved — but it offers the best way to simulate potential outcomes. CBS Sports' Tyler Sullivan simulated the 2025 NFL season with the latest version of the game, and it predicted that the Los Angeles Rams will go very far. Not only did it have the Rams making the playoffs, but L.A. went all the way to the NFC Championship game and faced off against the Green Bay Packers. The Rams earned the No. 2 seed and took down the New York Giants in the Wild Card — the shocking No. 7 seed of this scenario — in a 34-17 blowout. L.A. then went on to beat the Washington Commanders in a 27-24 nailbiter. L.A.'s season ended in the conference title game, though. The Rams fell to the Packers, 41-27, in a game where Packers quarterback Jordan Love eviscerated the Rams' defense for 267 yards and four touchdowns. So, the secondary ended up being the team's biggest issue after all. Could this happen? Sure! Anything is possible at this point in the NFL calendar. And Rams fans would have to be a little excited to see their team make it a round further than it did a year ago. Not winning the Lombardi Trophy is a shame but, again, this is only a simulation.

No. 11 Arizona State now seeks something special after Big 12 title debut in unpredictable league

Arizona State was a big surprise debuting in the Big 12 with a conference championship and making the College Football Playoff after being picked to finish at the bottom of the 16-team league. Kenny Dillingham, the 35-year-old coach now in his third season at his alma mater, bluntly told his Sun Devils they really didn't do anything special last year. 'The reality is there's been a lot of teams in college football who have done what we've done, who have won one year and then come back to reality,' Dillingham said. 'What would be special would be to continue to build off of that. The real challenge was how do we not become what normal teams in our situation do, which is fall back to where we've always been.' After a CFP quarterfinal loss in double overtime to now preseason No. 1 Texas, the No. 11 Sun Devils are the highest-ranked team from the unpredictable Big 12, even after the departure of do-everything running back Cam Skattebo to the NFL. They return quarterback Sam Leavitt (2,855 yards, 24 TDs passing), the preseason Big 12 offensive player of the year, and receiver Jordyn Tyson (75 catches, 1,101 yards, 10 TDs) is healthy after missing the end of the last season with a collarbone injury. The last time Arizona State was higher in the preseason Associated Press Top 25 was No. 8 in 1998, what turned into a 5-6 season. The Big 12's other ranked teams are No. 17 Kansas State and league runner-up No. 22 Iowa State, who open against each other with a conference game in Ireland on Aug. 23, along with No. 23 Texas Tech. All return quality starting quarterbacks. Texas Tech transformed its program with big money through the transfer portal and made the preseason poll for the first time since 2008, six years before three-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Patrick Mahomes played a game for the Red Raiders. Passers and a rusher make contenders Baylor redshirt sophomore Bryson Washington (1,028 yards, 12 TDs) is the only of the Big 12's eight 1,000-yard rushers back from last season. The Bears, who won their last six regular-season games, also return quarterback Sawyer Robertson (3,335 yards, 27 TDs). Leading passer Shedeur Sanders (4,134 yards, 37 TDs) went in the NFL draft after two seasons at Colorado, but the next eight top QBs were all coming back, including Iowa State's Rocco Becht, Texas Tech's Behren Morton and K-State's Avery Johnson. The only change was Jake Retzlaff unexpectedly leaving BYU this spring after a since-dismissed civil sexual assault lawsuit. Three seasons after making the national title game, TCU has Josh Hoover (3,949 yards, 27 TDs) after a 9-4 season capped by four consecutive wins. Old coaches feeling some heat Only Iowa's Kirk Ferentz in his 27th season has been with his FBS team longer than Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy and Utah's Kyle Whittingham. The Big 12's stalwarts are coming off huge disappointments in their 20th seasons. Utah was the presumptive favorite last year to be the team to make its Big 12 debut with a title, but had its first losing season (5-7, 2-7 Big 12) since 2013. Two-time Pac-12 champion quarterback Cam Rising had to 'medically retire', but dual-threat QB Devon Dampier followed new offensive coordinator Jason Beck from New Mexico. Oklahoma State was 3-9 and didn't win a conference game, its first losing season since Gundy's 4-7 debut in 2005. And there is still plenty of uncertainty with two new coordinators and a lot of transfers. 'The changes in how we go about rebuilding, whether it's financially or roster management, have been challenging but also intriguing,' Gundy said. 'It's different than it's ever been before.' Familiar new coaches Scott Frost has reunited with UCF and Rich Rodriguez is back at West Virginia, but they are new coaches to the Big 12 since those schools weren't yet in the league when they were there. 'Whatever head coaching spot, it takes you six to nine months to kind of get a lay of the land,' Rodriguez said. 'Well, West Virginia took six to nine minutes. ... But, then again, there's also times of change.' The Mountaineers are in their 14th Big 12 season. They has three consecutive 11-win seasons in the Big East from 2005-07 before Rodriguez went to Michigan. This is UCF's third Big 12 season. Frost coached UCF's undefeated season out of the American Athletic Conference in 2017, when the Knights declared themselves national champions and he left for Nebraska. Games to watch TCU opens 2026 in Ireland against North Carolina, but this year will be in Chapel Hill as the visitor for Bill Belichick's UNC debut on Labor Day night. The Horned Frogs two years ago lost their season opener in coach Deion Sanders' first game with Colorado. Sanders, who was treated this summer for bladder cancer, has his first Buffs game without a son on the team Aug. 29 against Georgia Tech. Other notable games: No. 11 Arizona State at Baylor, and No. 23 Texas Tech at Utah, Sept. 20; TCU at No. 11 Arizona State, Sept. 26; No. 17 Kansas State at Baylor, Oct. 4; No. 11 Arizona State at Utah, Oct. 11; No. 23 Texas Tech at No. 11 Arizona State, Oct. 18; No. 11 Arizona State at No. 22 Iowa State, and No. 23 Texas Tech at No. 17 Kansas State on Nov. 1; Big 12 championship game, Dec. 6.
