Packers WR Jayden Reed in walking boot with foot injury, Week 1 availability in question

USA Today4 days ago
Green Bay Packers receiver Jayden Reed is in a walking boot due to a new foot injury that could threaten his availability for Week 1 against the Detroit Lions.
Coach Matt LaFleur said Reed's injury is to his left foot only and is unrelated to the toe injury that had him on the non-football injury list to start training camp.
"It's unfortunate but hopefully we'll get him back before the regular season," LaFleur said following Saturday night's preseason loss to the New York Jets.
LaFleur admitted there is potential that Reed, the Packers' top option in the slot, could miss Week 1.
"Any time you see a guy in a boot, that's a concern," LaFleur said.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Reed has a "sprained foot" and is considered "day to day."
Reed, the team's leading receiver each of the last two seasons, didn't practice on Thursday and was sidelined for Saturday's preseason opener. He said he suffered the injury while making a cut at practice.
The Packers are also missing Christian Watson, who is recovering from ACL surgery, and Dontayvion Wicks, who is nursing a calf injury suffered during training camp. Rookie receiver Savion Williams suffered a concussion early in camp and didn't play in Saturday's preseason opener.
The Packers' regular season opener against the Lions is Sunday, Sept. 7, so Reed has roughly four weeks to get his foot healthy enough to play.
Veteran Romeo Doubs and rookie first-round pick Matthew Golden started at receiver for the Packers against the Jets.

Falcons EDGE Bralen Trice says he 'feels great' despite missing preseason opener

Edge rusher Bralen Trice was among the players who did not get the chance to take the field with the Falcons in the team's preseason opener against the Detroit Lions, but it doesn't mean the outlook is pessimistic. In fact, Trice himself seems rather optimistic about his 2025 season outlook. 'Nothing negative. Just taking care of my knee, making sure I get through the preseason," edge rusher Bralen Trice said, per the team's Terrin Waack. Trice, who was unable to take the field for the entirety of his rookie season due to a preseason ACL injury, says his knee actually "feels great" at this point. With this, it is expected we will get get a chance to see what Trice is truly made of as a player sooner rather than later. The 6-foot-4, 274-pounder who was originally selected by the team in the third round of the 2024 NFL draft, earned high accolades at Washington, named the team's MVP in 2022 and 2023. The best season of his career came in 2023 when he set a single-season career-high with 49 tackles (30 solo), tallying seven sacks, two passes defended, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery over 15 starts. On the entirety of his college career, the former Husky left the university with 101 combined tackles (63 solo), 29 tackles for loss, 18 sacks, two passes defended, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. As things continue to trend in the right direction, it will be interesting to see how Trice looks in the second game olf the preseason as the Falcons take on the Tennessee Titans. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET in Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Friday.

Orr's annual NFL predictions has Packers finishing 9-8, missing playoffs in 2025

A pair of predictions for the 2025 NFL season -- one from Nate Davis of USA Today, and another from Connor Orr of -- highlight the range of possible outcomes for the Green Bay Packers this year. Last week, Davis predicted the Packers would go 12-5, win the NFC North and run through gauntlet of the NFC playoffs before losing to the Baltimore Ravens in the Super Bowl. Obviously, a title is the goal, but the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance since the 2010 season is something bordering on a best-case scenario for 2025. However, Orr wasn't nearly as optimistic. For his annual 272-game prediction at Orr had the Packers finishing 9-8 and missing the playoffs completely. From Orr: "This Packers team has a streaky potential to me. I think there could be weeks when this offense is white hot and weeks where it looks out of rhythm—a bit like the 2023 team that had longer NBA-like runs of brilliance and confusion. I did want to reflect it all coming together offensively toward the end of the season with two consecutive wins over very good defenses in Baltimore and Minnesota—an acknowledgement that when this offense is fully understood and coherent, it's going to be really good." Orr had the Packers starting 2-2, losing three straight games coming out of the bye, winning four straight games after falling to 2-5 and then laboring through a 1-3 stretch before finishing with wins over the Ravens and Vikings. That's about as streaky as it gets for a 9-8 team. But 9-8 wasn't good enough to make the NFC playoffs. Orr had the Lions winning the division at 10-7 and the Vikings getting in as a wildcard team at 10-7. The Rams and Commanders also got in as wildcard teams at 10-7. Last year, Orr predicted the Packers would finish 12-5, with losses to the Eagles (in the opener), Lions (twice), Bears (in the finale) and Rams. He also got all four division winners right and correctly had the Packers as a wildcard team in the NFC. The Packers will hope Orr's predictive powers come up short in 2025.
