Jim Thorpe man pleads guilty to vehicular homicide in Carbon County crash that killed 3
According to court records, Brett Knoll, 41, of Jim Thorpe, pleaded guilty to three counts of homicide by vehicle and one count of aggravated assault by vehicle on April 14. He was initially charged with three counts of homicide by vehicle, four counts of aggravated assault by vehicle, and multiple summary traffic violations.
On Aug. 7, 2021, Knoll crashed into a Toyota Camry occupied by four men at the intersection of Interstate 476 and Route 903, killing three of the Camry's occupants. Two of the decedents died at the scene, and one was later pronounced dead at Geisinger Hospital. One occupant who was unbelted was ejected from the Camry, and an occupant who improperly wore his seatbelt was partially ejected.
The victims were three New Jersey men: Nicholas Nissen, 25, of South Amboy; Joseph Riggio Jr., 30, of Parlin; and Michael Guevara, 31, of Bayonne.
According to a Pennsylvania State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Specialist Unit investigation, Knoll drove at 'such an excessive speed' to cause a hazard and give up his right of way.
Both Knoll and the driver of the Camry, the lone survivor from that vehicle, were wearing seatbelts.
Knoll is scheduled to be sentenced on July 10 by Carbon County Court of Common Pleas Judge Steven Serfass.

Fort Myers man changes plea during trial for deadly crash, sentenced to prison
A Fort Myers man accused of leaving a fatal pedestrian crash more than a year ago changed his plea on the third day of his trial. Wilson Fernando Maliza Guanulema, 48, faced charges of leaving an accident scene involving death and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence. He pleaded no contest on Aug. 20. Court documents identified the victim as Felipe Martinez Mendoza, 52. He is one of 129 road fatalities stemming from Lee County crashes in 2024. According to the troopers, Maliza Guanulema's Toyota Camry struck Martinez Mendoza at Jan. 6, 2024, on Palm Beach Boulevard at Fairfax Drive, in Tice, and then fled. Martinez Mendoza, who tried to cross Palm Beach Boulevard, died on scene. During their search for Maliza Guanulema's car, according to court documents, authorities noted the accused driver removed a series of stickers by the time they found the car at Rapid Service Body Shop, 1028 S.E. 12th Ave., in Cape Coral. The same day troopers released surveillance footage they believed was connected to the accident, they impounded the car. When troopers spoke with Maliza Guanulema's wife, his arrest affidavit says, she broke down into tears, said that her husband is a "good guy" and told troopers she did not know what to do. Judge says no: Cape Coral man arrested 8 years after fatal crash to remain jailed without bond She wife told troopers he called her the day of the crash and said he had just hit someone and that he was scared. According to his wife, after the impact, Maliza Guanulema braked, checked his right-side mirror and saw Martinez Mendoza getting back up. When troopers spoke with Martinez Mendoza, he said it rained earlier that day and that he saw a shadow along the road before he felt an impact. After the impact, the accused driver told troopers he saw a "coffee color." Martinez Mendoza said he removed the stickers from the car he was driving because he feared the mechanics would not return them. During his trial, on Aug. 20, Martinez Mendoza pleaded no contest to the charges and Lee County Judge Maria Gonzalez sentenced him to four years in prison. Fort Pierce man gets 2 years' prison after plea in deadly 2022 crash in Port St. Lucie
FORT PIERCE – A 24-year-old man was sentenced to two years in prison in connection with a 2022 crash that ultimately left a 71-year-old driver dead, according to documents and attorneys. Mccenroe Davansky Duroseau, of Fort Pierce, pleaded no contest in July to a vehicular homicide charge involving the August 2022, crash on Northwest Selvitz Road in Port St. Lucie. Sentencing was Aug. 18 before Circuit Judge Michael Heisey. A 71-year-old man, identified in court records as Thomas David Coxey, succumbed to his injuries three days after the collision at HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce, a police spokesperson has said. Investigators determined Duroseau drove south on Northwest Selvitz Road at more than double the 35 mph speed limit when his Toyota Camry entered the northbound lanes, striking a Honda Civic before crashing head on with a Buick Encore driven by Coxey. The crash happened about 500 feet north of Northwest Archer Avenue, according to Sgt. Dominick Mesiti, Port St. Lucie Police spokesperson. Police calculated Duroseau was traveling at least 80 mph in the incident, using data collected from the vehicle. Duroseau and a passenger were taken to Lawnwood with non life-threatening injuries, records show. Assistant State Attorney Robert Stone said he asked for 10 years in prison. He said the lowest permissible sentence was 111 months. 'They (the defense) argued for a departure … from the lowest permissible sentence of 111 months,' Stone said. 'And Judge Heisey agreed and departed and gave him two years in prison and five years' probation.' Assistant Public Defender Rebecca Kelly, who heads the Fort Pierce office, said the defense argued that because it was an isolated incident and because of Duroseau's "extreme remorse" the judge should give him a lesser sentence. 'He listened to all the evidence and came to a decision," she said. Stone said there was testimony that Duroseau was remorseful and sorry, and 'that the only reason why he was traveling at the speeds he was going was because he believes his brother was being kidnapped in the other car that was speeding.' Bank case in Port St. Lucie: Three men sought after bank drive-thru ATM caper Deadly encounter in St. Lucie County: Law enforcement officers fatally shoot homicide suspect on I-95 after he points gun at them 'He just said that he had lost his memory and what he remembers is that's the reason why,' Stone said. Stone said the passenger in Duroseau's vehicle in a deposition said they weren't chasing another vehicle because of a kidnapping. He said the passenger didn't remember what they were doing. 'Going 105 mph in that area at 7:30 at night is very reckless and I don't know, one, how he was even able to control the car at that speed in that area, but then … he hit and killed somebody,' Stone said. 'I believe he was racing the other car. That's what other witnesses had said.' Will Greenlee is a breaking news reporter for TCPalm.
