New Zealand hang tough to beat Argentina 41-24
Winger Sevu Reece and substitute hooker Samisoni Taukei'aho scored two tries each as New Zealand saw off an Argentina resurgence to open their Rugby Championship campaign with a 41-24 win in Cordoba on Saturday.
Cortez Ratima and Ardie Saves also scored tries for New Zealand while Rodrigo Isgro, Tomas Albornoz and Joaquin Oviedo went over for the home team.
Beauden Barrett kicked a penalty and four conversions while Albornoz slotted over penalty and three conversions for a personal tally of 14 points.
The All Blacks' superiority showed through, although they had to see off a second-half surge from Argentina who were 31-10 down at the break but fought back to trail 31-24 before New Zealand closed out the match.
The visitors were ahead after four minutes as Barrett set the tone with a penalty before Will Jordan's long pass sent Reece over in the corner to put New Zealand 10-0 up inside the opening 10 minutes.
Argentina quickly countered with a try of their own as a long pass out to right winger Isgro reduced the lead to three points.
New Zealand powered ahead with three tries before the break as Jordan sliced through from the halfway line to set up Ratima, followed by another try for Ardie Savea who powered over from a lineout drive.

There was still time for another New Zealand try before the break as their forwards hammered away at the try line before Ratima swung the ball out to Reece and he went over in the corner.
Argentina reduced the deficit 11 minutes into the second half as Albornoz attacked the line at pace and dived over as the All Black defence was caught napping.
When Billy Proctor was sent to the sin bin, there was renewed hope for the home side and they took advantage of their numerical superiority as Oviedo went over in the 64th minute to make the score 31-24.
New Zealand ended Argentine hopes of a recovery, however, as a lineout maul put Taukei'aho over and he added another try to seal the win.
The sides meet in Buenos Aires again next Saturday. REUTERS

Pacific Vampire proves too strong over 1,020m sprint
KUALA LUMPUR - Pacific Vampire proved his dominance over the sharp 1,020m sprint in the RM62,000 (S$18,900) Supreme A race at Sungai Besi on Aug 17, albeit on the No. 2 track. With his natural early speed, the Jason Ong-trained six-year-old has - more often than not - proved hard to catch when racing on the main track in Selangor. But with the Supreme A contest run over the sharper No. 2 track on the inside, three well-backed runners took Pacific Vampire on, consisting of his stablemate and the bang-in-form Filial Dragon - who won four consecutive races before going down to Noah Khan in his last start - Platinum Fort and Bransom. But they all proved to be no match for Pacific Vampire as he cruised to a 3¼-length victory. Platinum Fort (Marc Lerner) took the early lead, and Pacific Vampire (Jerlyn Seow) quickly joined him, before breaking away to a clear lead at the 600m. Bransom (Clyde Leck) followed in third, with Dream Alliance (Andre da Silva) and Filial Dragon (Oscar Chavez) behind in fourth and fifth respectively. Pacific Vampire ($12) led into the straight three lengths clear of Platinum Fort. Tried as the latter did, he could not gain ground on the leader and had to settle for second. Filial Dragon just beat Bransom to take third. The winning time was a slick 58.1sec for the 1,020m on the yielding track. Two-time Singaporean champion apprentice Seow was concerned with the trip and outside barrier before the race, but Pacific Vampire dispelled all her doubts. "He's (Pacific Vampire) a genuine, fabulous and amazing horse," said Seow, who rode the son of Impending at his debut win in Singapore on April 6, 2024. "We did have some doubts today because it's 1,020m, and we had a wide barrier draw (8). We expected a lot of speed on the inside, but I think the speed was just right today." Seow has now ridden Pacific Vampire to three of his four wins in Malaysia. The Pacific Stable-owned gelding has also picked up four wins from 11 starts at Kranji previously. Pacific Star ($24) rang up a back-to-back double for Ong after the Boulder City six-year-old completed a hat-trick of wins in the RM49,000 Supreme C event (1,800m) under da Silva. The leading Brazilian jockey was also his winning partner in his last two starts. Also owned by Pacific Stable, Pacific Star has won six times over 1,200m to 1,600m in Singapore, and has saluted four times over middle-distance races from 13 starts in Malaysia. World champions Chelsea brought down to earth by Palace
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox LONDON - A huge banner hailing the "Champions of the World" was unfurled in The Shed end of the Stamford Bridge stadium before Chelsea's return to domestic action on Sunday hot on the heels of the club's success at the Club World Cup last month. But by the end of the 0-0 draw at home to Crystal Palace, Chelsea fans had no doubts about the differences between playing in a summer tournament and the rigours of the Premier League, even with the addition of yet more high-profile signings. Chelsea were fortunate not to have gone behind in the 13th minute when Eberechi Eze hammered home a free-kick for the visitors, only for his effort to be overruled on a technicality due to the position of a teammate in the defensive wall. The Blues' Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens failed to have much impact on their league debuts and it was stand-in 19-year-old defender Josh Acheampong - selected to play in the centre of the back line - who caught the eye. After the excitement generated by Chelsea's 3-0 drubbing of European champions Paris St Germain in the Club World Cup final on July 13, and pre-season wins over Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan, Sunday's stalemate was frustrating for the home fans. Their chorus of "We've won it all" faded as Chelsea struggled to pierce Palace's defensive lines and there was an air of resignation as the final whistle approached. Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca can take some positives from the performance of his young side against last season's FA Cup winners, including the impact of Brazilian winger Estevao who injected urgency and pace after he came on in the 54th minute. Maresca praised Estevao for showing personality and said: "He will be a very important player for this club." The Italian manager played down suggestions Chelsea's preparations for the new season were too short due to the club competing in the United States until mid-July. "I don't think so because until the end we competed, we tried to win the game," he told reporters. Palace coach Oliver Glasner was peppered with questions about the future of England midfielder Eze who is reported to a transfer target for Tottenham Hotspur and other clubs. "It's the club's decision and we will see what happens," the Austrian said. REUTERS

Chelsea held to 0-0 draw at home by Crystal Palace
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox LONDON - Chelsea survived an early scare when Crystal Palace had an Eberechi Eze goal controversially disallowed in a scrappy 0-0 draw in the Premier League on Sunday. Chelsea, whose last competitive outing was winning the Club World Cup last month, failed to stamp their authority on the game against the FA Cup holders in warm southwest London sunshine. The visitors looked to have taken the lead in the 13th minute but referee Darren England consulted the pitchside monitor and ruled Palace captain Marc Guehi, who shoved Moises Caicedo out of the way, was too close to Chelsea's defensive wall when Eze took a free kick on the edge of the area. Chelsea, who finished fourth last season and won the Conference League, gave starts to some of their recent youthful signings including Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens, but it was 18-year-old Brazilian substitute Estevao who made the most impact, with a lively performance down the right wing.
